WWW.LIVESCIENCE.COM'Extremely rare' Roman military camp found in Slovakia holds hastily buried remains of Marcus Aurelius' soldiers with some dumped in wellsArchaeologists in Slovakia have uncovered a large Roman military camp likely used by Marcus Aurelius' troops during conflicts with Germanic tribes in the late second century. The "extremely rare" camp came as a surprise to archaeologists, as it holds the hastily buried remains of numerous soldiers in unusual graves, including wells.Remains of the 18.2-acre (7.4 hectare) camp were found near the town of urany in southwestern Slovakia, according to a translated July 17 statement from MH Invest, which excavated the area along with the Institute of Archaeology at the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS)."We have a unique opportunity to explore practically an entire Roman marching camp, which is extremely rare in the European context," Matej Ruttkay, director of the SAS Institute of Archaeology, said in the statement. "We are clearly investigating a place that disappeared immediately after the military conflict between the Romans and the Germans."Between A.D. 166 and 180, the Romans fought a series of battles against a Germanic people called the Marcomanni, who lived north of the Danube River along the border of the Roman Empire in what are now Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Marcus Aurelius, who reigned as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, commanded troops in the Marcomannic Wars with the goal of defending and securing Rome's border against barbarian invasions. But the wars ended upon Marcus Aurelius' death, when his son Commodus negotiated a peace with the Marcomanni, according to third-century Roman historian Cassius Dio. The newly discovered Roman military camp had clear defensive characteristics, including five entrance gates, fortifications, and a curved ditch-and-rampart system typical of marching or legionary camps, according to the statement. The urany camp is only the second Roman military installation ever found in western Slovakia; the first camp, discovered in 2024 by SAS archaeologists, is thought to be where Marcus Aurelius wrote part of his Meditations. The urany camp surprised archaeologists with a large number of skeletons and parts of skeletons buried in ditches, wells and hastily dug shallow graves, according to the statement. "Our preliminary findings indicate that in most cases these are Roman soldiers," Marek Vojteek, an archaeologist at the SAS Institute of Archaeology, said in the statement. "Numerous components of Roman military equipment and weaponry were also found with the skeletal remains, such as spears, arrowheads, parts of helmets, segmented and scale armor, legionary brooches, coins, and the characteristic 'caligae' military sandals, from which iron nails on the soles have been preserved," he said. X-ray analysis of blocks of clay revealed the intact sandal nails, which are now stored at the SAS Institute of Archaeology's specialized laboratory for further analysis. "It is literally a miracle to see the original footwear of a Roman soldier and even to be able to determine its size," Michal Cheben, an archaeologist at the SAS Institute of Archaeology, said in the statement. RELATED STORIESLavish Roman villa discovered outside Rome's walls may have been frequented by Hadrian and Marcus AureliusMass grave of Roman-era soldiers discovered beneath soccer field in ViennaArchaeologists discover decapitated head the Romans used as a warning to the CeltsThe unusual burials raise important questions about the use and abandonment of this Roman military camp, according to Cheben, including whether the soldiers died from combat injuries or disease and why the bodies weren't looted before being thrown into storage pits and wells. "Laboratory analyses and further genetic and anthropological research may provide answers," Cheben said. Because the camp was so large and the artifacts so numerous, a comprehensive analysis of the site will take several years and will involve international experts in carbon dating, soil analysis, isotopic analysis and ancient DNA, according to the statement."This is a long-term process, so many results will only become known in the coming years," Ruttkay said. WWW.THECOUNTRYCOOK.NETCrock Pot French Onion Salisbury SteakThis Crock Pot French Onion Salisbury Steak recipe is made with tender beef patties simmered in an onion gravy and topped with melted provolone cheese.A Hearty Dinner Everyone LovesThis Crock Pot French Onion Salisbury Steak is one of those recipes that doesnt just fill bellies, it warms the soul. I really love creating crock pot recipes because I think they get a bad reputation that they cant come out as delicious as when making something on the stovetop or oven and its just not true! You can make really amazing meals in your slow cooker and this is one of them! Its hearty and filling and has that smack your lips kinda flavor!Frequently Asked Questions:What is Salisbury Steak? Salisbury steak is a dish made from seasoned ground beef formed into patties and cooked in a savory gravy. Its a classic comfort food recipe thats been popular for generations. Now, Im bringing even more flavor with the addition of the French Onion Soup flavors. Can I brown the patties first? Absolutely. While its not necessary, browning the patties before adding them to the slow cooker can add extra color and flavor. You can even lightly coat them in flour before browning, similar to traditional Salisbury steak recipes. Is this very onion flavored? Yes. The combination of canned French onion soup and French onion soup mix creates a bold onion flavor. If you prefer something less onion-forward, you may enjoy a traditional Salisbury steak recipe instead, like my Crock Pot Salisbury Steaks. Can I make this with less sodium? This recipe is naturally on the higher side in sodium due to the canned French onion soup and onion soup mix. For those looking to reduce sodium, use no-salt-added beef broth (which I actually do here) and make a homemade onion soup mix using no salt beef bouillon granules and use a no salt French Onion soup (if you can find it). Even with those adjustments, the recipe may still be saltier than some people prefer. So, if youre on a strict low sodium diet, you may need to skip this recipe. What to serve with Crock Pot French Onion Salisbury Steak? This recipe is best served with something that can soak up all that delicious gravy. I like to serve it with some Mashed Potatoes, or on a bed of buttered noodles, with some white or brown rice, a side of roasted potatoes, Dinner Rolls, Green Beans, roasted broccoli, or a side salad. How do I store leftovers? Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until heated through. Add a splash of beef broth if the gravy has thickened too much during storage. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating. Ingredients Needed: (See Recipe Card Below For The Full Recipe)lean ground beef a leaner ground beef works best since it releases less grease while cooking. If youre worried about the cost of the beef, I think you could get away with using just one pound of beef. Youll just end up with smaller patties. If you choose to do this, I dont think youll need to alter much of anything else, except maybe reduce the breadcrumbs to cup. Ground turkey works well, though the finished dish will have a lighter flavor than the beef version.garlic powder breadcrumbs I discussed above in the ground beef line that if you adjusted the amount of ground beef, you may need to adjust the breadcrumbs that you use. If you dont have breadcrumbs, you can use Panko instead.large egg this jut acts as a binder to hold the meat together.Worcestershire sauce French onion soup I have not seen a low sodium canned French onion soup that you can use but perhaps you can find some near you. If you are still worried about sodium, maybe this recipe isnt for you, as its really hard to limit the sodium with these specific ingredients. If you want less of an onion flavor, you can use beef consomme instead, but, that would change up the French Onion Salisbury Steak flavors.French onion soup mix to help control some of sodium intake, or if you dont have any on hand, you can use some Homemade French Onion Soup Mix. If you really love the onion flavor, using both canned soup and soup mix gives deeper onion flavor.unsalted beef broth I really suggest sticking to an unsalted broth as there are plenty of other ingredients that will bring more sodium to the dish. It can be really easy to get too salty.cornstarch and water youll add this at the to help thicken the gravy.provolone cheese Swiss cheese is a delicious alternative and complements the onion gravy very well. You could even use mozzarella. How To Make Crock Pot French Onion Salisbury SteakMake ground beef mixtureIn a bowl, add ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, breadcrumbs, egg, and Worcestershire sauce.
