Heaven Lake: China's deepest lake sits atop a colossal volcano and belongs mostly to North Korea
QUICK FACTSName: Tianchi Lake, or Heaven LakeLocation: China-North Korea borderCoordinates: 42.0091, 128.0593Why it's incredible: It is the deepest lake in China and sits at the top of a giant volcano.Heaven Lake is a crater lake at the top of Mount Changbaishan (also called Changbai Mountain) a colossal, dormant volcano on the border between China and North Korea that formed through successive eruptions over the past 2.6 million years.Known in China as Tianchi, the lake is the highest and largest crater lake in Northeast Asia, according to UNESCO. It is also the deepest lake in China, according to a study published in March. The lake sits at an elevation of around 7,200 feet (2,200 meters), covers roughly 3.6 square miles (9.2 square kilometers), and has a maximum depth of 1,224 feet (373 m), according to the study.Heaven Lake is surrounded by 16 peaks that belong to Mount Changbaishan. The lake fills a caldera created by past eruptions, the biggest of which was the "millennium eruption" that took place in A.D. 946 and remains one of the largest eruptions in modern history.Water started to pool on Mount Changbaishan's summit after the prehistoric Tianwenfeng eruption, which scientists dated to between 70,000 and 40,000 years ago. Heaven Lake has periodically emptied and refilled since then due to precipitation, snowmelt, and an active geothermal system beneath the volcano that forces water up through fault lines.Although hundreds of reports in the early 2000s claimed there was a creature with a head shaped like that of a horse living in the water, scientists have repeatedly said they are skeptical that any large creature could survive in Heaven Lake.Mount Changbaishan is one of the best-preserved stratovolcanoes from the past several million years, according to UNESCO. Stratovolcanoes, also known as composite volcanoes, are volcanic mountains built from alternating layers of solidified lava, volcanic ash and rocky debris. Mount Changbaishan is an "open-air classroom for volcanism" because it recorded the different stages of multiple eruptions in astounding detail. In North Korea, Mount Changbaishan is known as Mount Paektu or Paeku Mountain, meaning "white-topped mountain." The volcano's Chinese name means "forever white mountain."MORE INCREDIBLE PLACESSocotra Archipelago: The Yemeni islands covered with astonishing cucumber, bottle and dragon's blood treesFingal's Cave: Scotland's 'cave of melody' where eerie echoes bounce off pillars of solidified lavaThrhnkaggur: The only volcano on Earth where you can descend into a magma chamberChina, North Korea and South Korea have clashed over the volcano in the past, as the mountain holds cultural and geopolitical significance for the three countries. Two border treaties between China and North Korea in 1962 and 1964 divided the volcano and Heaven Lake roughly down the middle, with North Korea securing 54.5% of the lake.In the 2000s, China moved to develop the region around the volcano, opening the Mount Changbai Airport and the Mount Changbai Eastern Railroad to connect the region with the rest of the country. A geological park surrounding the Chinese site of the volcano was officially designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2024.Discover more incredible places, where we highlight the fantastic history and science behind some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth.

10 Reasons to Watch Neon Genesis Evangelion Today
Very few anime has had an impact quite like Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's gone on to inspire countless other storytellers, it's still seen in ads everywhere in Japan, and so much of it has long been in the cultural imagination. I first watched it in 2015, the year NGE takes place, and was lucky enough to visit the region around Mt. Fuji where it's set. Both the anime and its movie, The End of Evangelion, were brain-melting in the best way.

Buruburu EV Charging Station Powers Kenyas Electric Matatu Future
Advertisement Buruburu EV Charging Station Powers Kenyas Electric Matatu FutureKenya has taken another step towards cleaner public transport with the launch of a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Nairobis Buruburu Estate. The project brings together KCB Bank Kenya, the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) and ePureMotion. Together, the three partners are turning electric mobility plans into practical action. The charging station builds on a partnership announced in 2024. Through the initiative, KCB Bank Kenya committed to supporting matatu Saccos and operators with asset finance and insurance premium financing to modernize their fleets.Turning plans into actionThe Buruburu charging station shows how financing, infrastructure and technology can work together to accelerate electric public transport.Beyond providing charging services, the facility will serve as a learning centre for operators. They will gain practical experience in EV charging, vehicle inspections, maintenance planning and fleet operations.Meanwhile, ePureMotion will provide charging infrastructure, maintenance services, spare parts and technical training. The company also plans to introduce electric matatus and digital fleet management tools as demand grows.Financing the future of mobilitySpeaking during the launch, Juliana Kinyua, Acting Unit Head, Asset Finance and Insurance Premium Finance at KCB Bank Kenya, said the project demonstrates how financing can accelerate the shift to cleaner transport. She noted that KCBs partnership with the Matatu Owners Association is creating practical financing pathways that will help modernise the public transport sector. According to Kinyua, the Buruburu charging station also shows how financing, infrastructure and strong partnerships can deliver cleaner, more efficient and affordable mobility solutions for Kenyans. She added that KCB will continue supporting eligible Saccos and transport investors through structured financing solutions, subject to the banks lending requirements.Buruburu EV Charging Station Powers Kenyas Electric Matatu FutureKeeping operators at the centreThe Matatu Owners Association says the partnership ensures matatu owners remain at the heart of Kenyas electric mobility transition.MOA President Albert Karakacha said the initiative gives members access to financing, charging infrastructure and technical training. In addition, it prepares operators for new business opportunities in electric transport. He said the matatu industry has always been the backbone of everyday mobility in Kenya. Through the collaboration with KCB Bank Kenya and ePureMotion, MOA aims to ensure its members are fully included in the countrys transition to electric mobility.Additionally, the association will mobilise participating Saccos, coordinate operator engagement and support member readiness throughout the transition.Supporting Kenyas clean transport agendaThe launch follows the governments introduction of the National Electric Mobility Policy earlier this year. The policy provides a roadmap for expanding electric transport, attracting investment and developing charging infrastructure across the country. At the same time, Kenya continues to pursue its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. Electric mobility can also reduce fuel import costs while taking advantage of the countrys largely renewable electricity supply.Today, nearly 90 percent of Kenyas electricity comes from geothermal, hydro, wind and solar energy. As a result, electric transport offers both environmental and economic benefits.Building momentum for electric matatusThe Buruburu charging station will serve as a pilot site for electric matatu operations. It will also provide valuable lessons on charging, maintenance and daily fleet management.Over time, the partners expect the project to guide the rollout of similar charging stations along other busy matatu routes and Sacco locations across Kenya.Ultimately, the initiative highlights how collaboration between financial institutions, transport operators and technology providers can accelerate Kenyas transition to cleaner, smarter and more sustainable public transport. The post Buruburu EV Charging Station Powers Kenyas Electric Matatu Future appeared first on Africa Business News.
