Olga Hepnarov, The Czech Mass Murderer Who Drove A Truck Into A Crowd Of People
Archive of the Police MuseumOlga Hepnarov in an undated photograph. One summer day in 1973, a group of elderly people stood waiting at a Prague tram stop for their morning ride when a truck suddenly came hurtling down the road. Just before 2 p.m., it swerved violently onto the pavement and slammed straight into them. The truck was driven by 22-year-old Olga Hepnarov. And she had driven into them on purpose.A loner who felt rejected by society, Hepnarov killed eight people and injured a dozen more. She had meticulously planned the attack in advance, and even sent letters to local newspapers about her motives, which arrived two days later. At trial, she stated she had no objection to the death penalty and, indeed, she was soon sentenced to death. On March 12, 1975, Olga Hepnarov became the last woman to be executed in Czechoslovakia when she was just 23 years old. This is her story, which inspired the chilling 2016 film I, Olga Hepnarov. The Troubled Early Life Of Olga HepnarovIn Olga Hepnarovs telling, her life was unhappy from the beginning. Born on June 30, 1951, in Prague, Czechoslovakia (todays Czech Republic), she claimed that both her parents were abusive. As TVN24 Magazine reports, Hepnarov stated that her father beat her and that her mother dressed her in ugly clothes, to make herself more attractive. They purportedly favored Hepnarovs sister, and Hepnarov attempted to run away from home twice.Things were no better at school, where Hepnarov was purportedly bullied and called names by her classmates. She began skipping classes, fell behind her peers, and, around the age of 13, tried to die by suicide. Find a GraveOlga Hepnarov, circled and seated on the far right of the first row, with her school class. In the aftermath of her suicide attempt, Hepnarov was sent to the Childrens Psychiatric Hospital in Opaany. There, doctors noted that Hepnarov was depressive and prone to mood swings, and had antisocial tendencies. But their diagnosis did little to help. Hepnarovs experience in the hospital was purportedly just as torturous as her time in school. When she tried to run away, Gazeta reports that paramedics drugged her and abused her. Hepnarov also endured beatings from other patients. Though Hepnarov was also able to explore her sexuality TVN24 Magazine reports she had her first sexual experiences with women at the hospital and though doctors believed that she improved during the course of her stay, Hepnarov remained troubled when she was discharged in 1966. I hate people, she wrote to one of the hospitals doctors in 1967. I wonder how my relationship will look as time goes by. I want the people to not exist for me at all, their words and chatter are indifferent to me. Thats what I want. Its better for me when Im alone than when Im with them Everyone falls for their smiles and fellowship. They mutilated my soul.In the years that followed, Olga Hepnarovs misanthropic feelings only deepened. She began to think of a way to take revenge on society. How Olga Hepnarov Murdered Eight PeoplePublic DomainOlga Hepnarovs booking photo. After leaving Opaany, Olga Hepnarov tried to return to normal life. She worked different jobs, including as a driver, and even struck up a couple of friendships. But Hepnarov was volatile and prone to sudden mood swings. Few of her jobs lasted, and her friendships often came to sudden ends. She decided to take revenge on society. After thinking about setting off a bomb or derailing a train, Hepnarov settled on driving a car into a crowd of people. She sent letters to local newspapers explaining her motivation and, on July 10, 1973, she put her plan into action. That afternoon, Hepnarov drove a rented truck to Pragues Strossmayer Square. She had picked the location because the tram stop there usually drew a large crowd, because it was located at the bottom of a hill, which would allow her to gather momentum, and because it had a low curb, so that she could drive her truck more easily onto the sidewalk. Hepnarov waited until a good number of people had gathered. Then, just before 2 p.m., she pressed on the accelerator. I turned onto the sidewalk, straightened the steering wheel, and then drove along the sidewalk, running over people, Olga Hepnarov later testified. I kept driving along the sidewalk, along the wall, until the end, that is, until I had run over all the people there and hit the bus stop post. Then the car stopped. And that was it. What more can I say?Czech PoliceThe aftermath of Olga Hepnarovs attack in Prague. July 1973.She had rammed straight into the crowd, killing three people instantly and fatally injuring five more. Others were badly injured. There was screaming, blood, and injured people everywhere, Karel Skrun, a paramedic, recalled according to Radio Prague International. The other people stood around in shock. Meanwhile, Hepnarov got out of the truck and lit a cigarette. It didnt take long for investigators to figure out her motives. Newspapers soon received Hepnarovs letters, which read, in part: I am a broken person, destroyed by other people. So I have a choice: either I kill myself, or I kill others. And I have decided: I will pay my tormentors back everything. If I were to die an unknown suicide, I would make it too easy for you I, Olga Hepnarov, victim of your bestiality, condemn you to death by being run over. I declare that these x victims are not enough for my life. The Last Woman Executed By CzechoslovakiaCzech PoliceThe letter that Olga Hepnarov sent to newspapers shortly before she drove a truck into a crowd of people in Prague. There was never any doubt about Olga Hepnarovs culpability. She admitted to the act, declared herself to be mentally healthy, and stated that she wished she had killed more people. Her attorney tried to argue that Hepnarov was insane, but she was found guilty and sentenced to death. Though Hepnarovs mental state deteriorated in the years that followed, her execution proceeded as planned. As she was lead to the gallows at Prague-Pankrc Prison on March 12, 1975, she purportedly expressed panic, the first emotion she had expressed since her arrest. Then, Olga Hepnarov was executed. She was 23 years old. Her story was later made into the 2016 film, I, Olga Hepnarov, which The New York Times called an austere, hypnotic story of sadness, madness, and murder[and] a deeply discomfiting document.Today, Olga Hepnarov and her crime are not well known outside of Europe. But her story is a chilling account of how someone can feel isolated and abused by society and how they might react in return. After reading about rampage killer Olga Hepnarov and her gruesome attack in Prague, discover the stories of some of the most notorious female serial killers of all time. Or, learn about Lavinia Fisher, who is said to be Americas first female serial killer. The Terrifying Legend Of Kuchisake Onna, The Slit-Mouthed Woman Of Japan
Japan has its fair share of monsters and ghost stories. But few are as frightening as the legend of kuchisake onna, the slit-mouthed woman.According to this creepy urban legend, kuchisake onna appears to people walking alone at night. Upon first glance, she seems to be a young, attractive woman covering the lower part of her face with a mask or fan.Wikimedia CommonsKuchisake onna featured in a yokai print scene. She approaches her victim and asks a simple question, Watashi, kirei? or Am I beautiful? If the victim says yes, the kuchisake onna exposes her full face, revealing her grotesque, bleeding mouth slashed ear-to-ear. She will ask once again, Am I beautiful? If her victim then says no or screams, kuchisake onna will attack and slash her victims mouth so that its like hers. If her victim say yes, she may leave them alone or follow them home and murder them. This eerie urban legend is bound to send a shiver down your spine. So where exactly did it come from? And how can someone survive an encounter with the kuchisake onna?Where Did The The Kuchisake Onna Legend Originate?Like many urban legends, the origins of the kuchisake onna can be difficult to trace. Its believed that the story first emerged during the Heian period (794 C.E. to 1185 C.E.). As the Atlantic reports, the kuchisake onna may have once been the wife of a samurai who mutilated her after she was unfaithful. Other versions of the story state that a jealous woman attacked her because of her beauty, that she was disfigured during a medical procedure, or that her mouth is full of razor-sharp teeth.Seisen International SchoolA drawing of the kuchisake onna waiting for a victim. In any case, the woman in question eventually became a vengeful ghost, or an onry. Her name breaks down to kuchi meaning mouth, sake meaning to tear or to split, and onna meaning a woman. Thus, kuchisake onna. The spirits of the dead who were killed in particularly violent manners abused wives, tortured captives, defeated enemies often do not rest well, an online database of Japanese folklore called Yokai explained. The kuchisake onna is thought to be one such woman. As the kuchisake onna, this vengeful spirit soon sought to take her revenge. So what exactly happens when you cross her path? And, more importantly, how can you survive meeting her?The Spirits Dangerous Question: Watashi, Kirei?Legend states that kuchisake onna stalks her victims at night and will often approach lone travelers. Wearing a surgical face mask in modern retellings or holding a fan over her mouth, the spirit asks them a simple but dangerous question: Watashi, kirei? or Am I beautiful? If her victim says no, then the vengeful spirit will immediately attack and kill them with a sharp weapon, sometimes described as a pair of scissors, sometimes as a butchers knife. If they say yes, shell lower her mask or fan, revealing her bloody, mutilated mouth. According to Yokai, shell then ask Kore demo? which roughly translates to even now? If her victim screams or cries out no! then kuchisake onna will mutilate them so that they look like her. If they say yes, she may let them go. But during the night, shell return and murder them.So how can you survive this vengeful spirits yes/no question? Fortunately, there are ways. The Business Standard reports that you can tell the spirit that shes average looking, throw hard candy called bekk-ame at her, or mention hair pomade which, for some reason, kuchisake onna cant stand. The Kuchisake Onna Legend TodayThough an ancient legend, stories of the kuchisake onna have endured for hundreds of years. Yokai reports that they spread during the Edo Period (1603 until 1867) though kuchisake onna encounters were often blamed on a different, shapeshifting spirit called kitsune. And in the 20th century, this creepy legend enjoyed a new resurgence. As Nippon reports, stories of a mysterious slit-mouthed woman started to spread in 1978. By no coincidence, this was the same time when many Japanese children started attending cram schools, which students in Japan attend to prepare for their difficult high school exams.YouTubeA depiction of the kuchisake onna preparing to take off her mask and reveal her disfigured face. Before, it was rare for rumors to cross over to another school district, Iikura Yoshiyuk, an associate professor at Kokugakuin University who researches oral literature told Nippon. But cram schools brought children from different areas together, and they took the stories they heard about other schools to share them at their own.As communication techniques grew more advanced like the Internet the legend of the kuchisake onna spread even further. As a result, some parts of this eerie legend took on new, regional characteristics. When you pass on a story orally, youre always going by memory, so even if there are small changes the main details stay the same, Iikura explained. Online, you can copy and paste or transform it completely if you want. It happens instantly, and physical distance is not an issue When urban legends travel to cities in other countries, they can change to fit better into the local culture. In some places, the vengeful spirit is said to wear a red face mask. In others, evil spirits can only travel in a straight line, so the kuchisake onna is described as being unable to turn a corner or chase someone up the stairs. In others, shes even accompanied by a boyfriend who also has a slit mouth and who also wears a mask.Real or not, the legend of the kuchisake onna has certainly proven to be a popular one in Japan and beyond. So next time youre approached by a beguiling stranger who wants to know if you think theyre attractive, think very, very carefully before you offer up an answer. For more interesting folklore from around the world, read the legend of Baba Yaga, the cannibalistic witch of Slavic folklore. Ham Hash Brown Casserole
Ham Hash Brown Casserole has all the breakfast favoritessavory ham, shredded hash browns, melty cheese, and eggs. A whole meal in one!A Simple, Filling Breakfast CasseroleI love this Ham Hash Brown Breakfast Casserole thats perfect for weekend mornings, brunch, or even meal prepping for the week. This could even just be a side dish if you want. Remove the ham and use cooked ground beef or leave the meat out entirely! It comes together in no time and will have everyone asking for seconds. Frequently Asked Questions:Can I make this ahead of time? Yes. Assemble the casserole the night before, cover it tightly, and refrigerate. In the morning, bake it fresh, adding an extra 5-10 minutes to the baking time since youre cooking it from cold. What kind of ham should I use? This recipe is great using leftover ham from other recipes. But you can buy a ham steak and dice it up or you can check the grocery store and find packages of already diced ham (which is what I used). Id check where your store normally stocks the ham or check where the luncheon meat is located. Can I change up the ham? Swap out the ham for cooked bacon, cooked and crumbled sausage, or even leftover cooked turkey for variety. If you want to make this with sausage, check out my Sausage Breakfast Casserole recipe. How do I know when its done baking? The center of the casserole should not jiggle when its fully cooked. Use a toothpick or knife to check; it should come out clean. Can I use fresh potatoes instead of frozen hash browns? Yes, you can use fresh potatoes. Shred them and pat them dry with a towel to remove excess moisture before using them in the recipe. What other cheese can I use in this Hash Brown Casserole? You can use Swiss, Monterey Jack, Colby, or pepper jack cheese for added flavor. A mix of cheeses also works great for a richer taste. How do I store leftover Ham Breakfast Casserole? Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving. Can I freeze this breakfast casserole? Absolutely! Assemble and bake the casserole as instructed, then let it cool completely. Wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and foil, then freeze for up to 2 months. To reheat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and bake at 350F until heated through (about 20-30 minutes). Ingredients Needed: (See Recipe Card Below For The Full Recipe)frozen hash browns I used the Great Value Shredded Hash Browns (not a paid affiliate link), but any thawed ones will work. For even cooking, make sure the hash browns are fully thawed and pat them dry to remove excess moisture.diced ham you can use any meat or make it meatless. Cooked and crumbled bacon tastes so good too!shredded cheddar cheese you can definitely use any cheese you enjoy. I think pepper jack is good for a little kick. Gruyere or even mozzarella work.eggssour cream if you dont like sour cream, you can omit it. It wont change the texture.heavy cream helps bring more moisture to the dish. You could use milk, but, I would use a whole milk for that added fat that will help.salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder you cant go wrong with this seasoning combo but please feel free to play with the seasoning and use what you enjoy! How To Make Ham Hash Brown Casserole:Prepare hash brown mixturePreheat the oven to 350F and spray a 913-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
