ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMMontana Man Discovers Lewis And Clark Allegedly Camped On His Property And Then Finds A Spoon And Fork Buried In The Ground@mineralsofmontana/TikTokMetal detectorists uncovered the handle of a spoon that they claim is linked to the Lewis and Clark Expedition.A group of modern-day explorers believes theyve come across artifacts connected to Lewis and Clarks famous expedition in the early 19th century. Is it really possible that a metal detector uncovered a piece of history or is it just wishful thinking? In a trending video with more than 374,000 views, content creator @mineralsofmontana claims that he and his friends found several artifacts in Montana that may be linked to two of the most famous explorers in American history. My buddy had found out that Lewis and Clark had camped on his property on their journey, and one day he was metal detecting and found half of a spoon that they had used. So you know we had to go back and go dig for some lost treasure, the text overlay reads. The men later uncovered a fork with a design on the handle that matched the spoon. Were finding treasure, someone states in the video. It has the exact same imprint.@mineralsofmontana/TikTokA large fork was uncovered near the spoon handle. While its clear that the explorers found some fascinating artifacts, whether they really belonged to Lewis and Clark is up for debate.Lewis And Clarks Time In MontanaIn 1803, President Thomas Jefferson asked his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to lead an expedition into the 828,000 square miles of territory the U.S. had just acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. The land covered the entirety of the present-day states of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska, as well as parts of Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North and South Dakota, and Minnesota.Lewis chose William Clark to help him command the Corps of Discovery, the team that would accompany them on the journey. They had multiple goals: map the territory, document plants and animals, make contact with Indigenous tribes, and find a practical route to the Pacific Ocean. The group set out from Camp Dubois in Illinois on May 14, 1804, on a mission that would cover 8,000 miles and last more than two years. The explorers identified 178 plants and 122 animals that were previously undocumented by scientists, including the grizzly bear, black-tailed prairie dog, and mule deer.According to Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, the expedition covered more ground in Montana than in any other state, first traveling through between April and September 1805.Public DomainCharles M. Russells 1905 painting of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.Over those five months, Lewis and Clark saw the Great Falls which Lewis called the grandest sight I ever beheld ate buffalo intestines, and admired Beaverhead Rock with Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who helped guide the men west. During their return trip in 1806, Clark climbed a sandstone butte along the Yellowstone River. He dubbed it Pompys Tower after Sacagaweas infant son, Jean Baptiste, whom Clark had nicknamed Pomp. He carved his name into the rock, where it remains to this day.So, while theres plenty of evidence that Lewis and Clark were indeed in Montana during their expedition, did they really leave utensils behind to be found by metal detectorists more than 200 years later? The Artifacts Uncovered By Metal DetectoristsThe video posted by @mineralsofmontana doesnt clarify why the men believe the spoon and fork belonged to Lewis and Clark, aside from the fact that the men allegedly camped on the property where the relics were found. In fact, its unclear whether the Corps of Discovery even carried forks. According to the Lewis and Clark Trail Alliance, Lewis compiled a shopping list in 1803 that included clothing, fishing tackle, lamps, weapons, ammunition, medicine, food, tobacco, and navigating equipment but no flatware.Public DomainWilliam Clark carved his name into the sandstone of the butte that he named Pompys Tower.Lewis and Clark were also far from the only explorers who ventured through Montana in the 19th century. Fur traders, military units, and countless settlers crossed the territory over the years, and any one of them could have left their utensils behind.Whats more, the spoon and fork havent been dated. They could easily be from a much more recent era. The metal detectorists would need to reach out to archaeologists to officially verify the age of the artifacts. Perhaps experts will someday confirm that the utensils did belong to Lewis and Clark, after all. @mineralsofmontana The day we found some buried treasure.. #fyp #treasure #lewisandclark #manifesting #energy original sound Minerals of montana All Thats Interesting reached out to @mineralsofmontana for comment. After reading about the artifacts found in Montana that may be linked to Lewis and Clark, learn about John Colter, a key member of the Corps of Discovery. ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMHow Sebastin Marroqun Reinvented His Life As Pablo Escobars SonWhen Pablo Escobar was killed in 1993, his son Juan Pablo Escobar publicly vowed revenge against those responsible. It appeared the 16-year-old heir to the King of Cocaines drug trafficking empire was going to follow in his fathers footsteps. But when the shock and anger of his fathers death abated, he chose a different path.Pablo Escobar and his son Juan Pablo Escobar, now known as Sebastin Marroqun.Since then, Juan Pablo Escobar, now known as Sebastin Marroqun, has provided a unique perspective on his father through the 2009 documentary Sins of My Father and his book, Pablo Escobar: My Father. They are both unvarnished accounts that present the contradictions inherent in his fathers life as a family man and ruthless drug kingpin. It also details how his fathers violent path propelled him on a journey to atone for his fathers sins a journey that was far from easy. The Early Life Of Juan Pablo Escobar Before He Became Sebastin MarroqunJuan Pablo Escobar was born on February 24, 1977 into a life of wealth and privilege growing up on Escobars luxurious estate, HaciendaNapoles. He had everything a child could want including swimming pools, go-karts, a zoo full of exotic wildlife, a mechanical bull, and servants to take care of every need.It was a lifestyle, not only bought and paid for by bloodshed, but oneseparated from the reality of how his father earned his fortune.YouTubePablo Escobar and his son, Juan Pablo Escobar (Sebastin Marroqun) in Washington, D.C.Escobar spoiled his son. He was a loving father, recalls Marroquin. It would be easy to try and fit in and say he was a bad man, but he wasnt. In May of 1981, Escobar and his family managed to slip into the United States for a holiday. He was not yet known as a criminal in the U.S. and traveled unnoticed under his own name. The family went to various places including Washington D.C. and Floridas Disney World, where Marroquin remembers his father enjoying the park like a child. Our family life hadnt yet become encumbered by complications. That was the only period of pure pleasure and lavishness that my father enjoyed.Coming To Terms With Being Pablo Escobars SonYouTube Pablo Escobar and his wife Maria Victoria Henao, the mother of Sebastin Marroqun. But in August of 1984, the reality of his fathers business hit home. Escobars face appeared all over the news as the mastermind behind the assassination of Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, Colombias Minister of Justice, who was the first politician to challenge Escobar. The heat was on Escobar. His wife, Maria Victoria Henao, had given birth to his daughter Manuela only months before in May, and now the family was forced to fleeto Panama and then later to Nicaragua. Life on the run had an adverse effect on the seven-year-old Juan Pablo Escobar. My life was the life of a criminal. I was suffering the same as if I had ordered all those murders by myself.Escobar realized there was a real threat of extradition from a foreign country. So the family returned to Colombia.Back in Colombia, Sebastin Marroqun received an education into his fathers drug business. At age eight, Escobar laid out all the different types of drugs on a table and explained to his young son what effects each had on the user. At nine, Marroquin got a tour of his fathers cocaine factories. Both of these actions were to convince Marroquin to stay out of the drug trade.YouTubePablo Escobar and his son Juan Pablo Escobar (Sebastin Marroqun) relaxing at home.Despite the warnings, the violence of Escobars business came to his familys doorstep. In 1988, war broke out between the Medellin and Cali cartels when a car bomb exploded in front of Escobars residence.Another war was brewing with the presidential candidate, Luis Carlos Galan, who was a member of the Liberal Party with Bonilla. Galan wanted to enforce extradition of drug traffickers to the United States. So, in 1989 Escobar had him assassinated just like Bonilla before him.The assassination of Galan and Bonilla left a lasting impression on Marroquin, something he would seek to make amends for as an adult. Now a teenager, Marroquin expressed disapproval of any form of violence [by Escobar] and rejected his actions. Maybe this was why he dedicated his surrendering to justice to his 14-year-old pacifist son.The Colombian government wanted Escobar to serve five years in prison. Escobar agreed on two conditions. First, that he designed the prison himself and second, that the government banned extradition of Colombian nationals to the U.S. With these conditions met, Escobar lived a luxurious existence in his prison called La Catedral.Inside La Catedral, he ran his drug empire as if he was a free man. He even had protective measures put in place to keep enemies out.Marroquin recalls visiting the prison after the Cali Cartel made threats to bomb it. Escobar had an architect draw up futuristic anti-bombing designs and considered having anti-aircraft guns installed for defense. La Catedral was never attacked, but the prison was really Escobars castle. When Escobar had men tortured and murdered in La Catedral, it was too much for the Colombian President Cesar Gaviria. He ordered Escobar be moved to a standard prison. But Escobar refused, and in July of 1992, he escaped after just 13 months imprisonment.Marroquin could see La Catedral from his house, and when the lights went out, he knew his father had escaped.Juan Pablo Escobars Life On The RunYouTubePablo Escobar, far right, sits with a group of his close Medellin family members.President Gaviria sent hundreds of troops after Escobar. Soon, Los Pepes, a vigilante group comprised of members of the Cali Cartel, disaffected Medellin drug dealers, and security forces, were after him too. The manhunt soon devolved into a dirty war.Los Pepes destroyed Escobars properties and went after his family. Our daily life changed drastically, remembers Marroquin. For all of us. Fear took over and the only goal we had was just to stay alive. There was a real dangerof execution by Escobars enemies. So Sebastin Marroqun escaped Colombia by helicopter with his mother and sister. But it was brief.Refuge in the United States was denied, and the same response came from Germany in November 1993. The Colombian authorities had contacted both countries to prevent the familys escape and as a result, they had no choice but to return to Colombia. If there was one thing Escobar was afraid of, it was that his family would be hurt. Los Pepes had proven just as violent as he was, and the Colombian government used his family as bait to draw him out of hiding. With danger mounting, the Colombian government assigned Escobars wife and children security and put them up in the ResidenciasTequendama hotel in Bogota that was owned by the Colombian National Police.Wikimedia CommonsOfficers pose next to Pablo Escobars body just after shooting him dead on December 2, 1993.The ploy to flush Escobar out of hiding worked. On Dec. 2, 1993, Pablo Escobar was shot dead on a rooftop in Medellin. At least this was the official version.Marroquin claims his father committed suicide. Ten minutes before his death, Escobar was talking with his son on the telephone. Marroquin said his father broke his own rule by staying on the telephone too long, which allowed authorities to trace the location of the call. Then, on the rooftop, Marroquinbelieves the DEA shot his father in the leg and shoulder before Escobar turned the gun on himself.According to Sebastin Marroqun, the official autopsy was falsified by the coroners to make the Colombian forces look like heroes. Its not a theory, Juan Pablo Escobar insists. Forensic investigators who performed the autopsy told us it was suicide but that they were threatened by the authorities not to disclose the truth in their final report.Problems were just beginning as Marroquins family needed money. Two weeks after Escobars death, Marroquin approached his uncle, Roberto Escobar, who was recovering in hospital from an assassination attempt. But the money set aside by Escobar for Marroquin and his family was gone. Roberto and paternal family members had spent it. This betrayal extended beyond money as Marroquin claims that Roberto colluded with the DEA to locate his father.Marroquin also visited his fathers enemies. They told him that if he wanted to keep himself and his family alive, he was to leave Colombia and never enter the drug business. Marroquin loved Colombia, but he did not want anything to do with the drug business.A New Life As Sebastin MarroqunOscar Gonzalez/NurPhoto/Getty ImagesJuan Pablo Escobar (Sebastin Marroqun) today. In the summer of 1994, Juan Pablo Escobar, his mother, and sister started a new life with new identities in Buenos Aires. Marroquin studied industrial design, while his mother became a real estate developer. But their past soon caught up with them when his mothers accountant discovered who they really were in 1999. The accountant tried to extort them, but Marroquin and his mother called his bluff and reported him to local authorities. In 2001, the story hit the news which exposed Marroquins true identity. The press hounded Marroquin for interviews. It was only when Argentine filmmaker Nicholas Entel approached him about making a documentary on his life and how he came to terms with his fathers violent business that he agreed to speak publicly. A significant part of the documentarySins of My Father is Sebastin Marroquns meetings with the children of assassinated Colombian politicians,Rodrigo Lara Restrepo andLuis Carlos Galan. The sons of Bonilla and Galan have followed their fathers footsteps into Colombian politics. They recall receiving a heartfelt letter from Marroquin asking for forgiveness. It was a letter that really moved us, Juan Manuel Galan said. We felt it was truly sincere, frank and transparent, and that this was a person who was honestly saying how he felt.Initially, Bonillas son Lara Restrepo flew to Argentina to meet with Marroquin. Then Marroquin flew to Bogota in September of 2008 to meet with the sons of both Bonilla and Galan in a hotel room. There was a tense atmosphere to begin with, but both families do not blame Marroquin for his fathers actions.Carlos Galantold Sebastin Marroqun. You, too, were a victim. A sentiment that is shared by the others.According to Lara Restrepo, Marroquins steps for reconciliation has sent a larger message to Colombiansabout the need to break the countrys cycle of violence.Marroquin reiterates this. Nothing is more important than peace. I think it is worth itto really risk our lives and everything we have so that peace really happens in Colombia someday.Sebastin Marroqun has certainly led by example. If the son of Pablo Escobar can reject life as a drug dealer and choose a different path, then so can others. With the past of Juan Pablo Escobar behind him, he currently lives in Buenos Aires with his wife and son and works as an architect. Now that you know about Pablo Escobars son, Juan Pablo Escobar, learn about Maria Victoria Henao, Pablo Escobars wife. ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMHow Pablo Escobars Medelln Cartel Became The Most Ruthless In HistoryAt the height of its power, the Medellin Cartel made roughly $100 million in drug profits a day. They supplied 96 percent of the United States cocaine and controlled 90 percent of the global cocaine market. The cartel differed from its smaller counterparts in that it was highly organized, highly influential, and capable of corrupting almost anyone. For just under twenty years, the cartel effectively took over Colombia.YouTubeThe main members of the Medelln Cartel.By the time of their downfall, not only was the Colombian government working around the clock to take them down but so were the governments of the United States and Canada as well as several organized resistance groups. Eventually, they were able to arrest or assassinate most of the cartel members, ending, of course, with the infamous Pablo Escobar. As the cartels leader, Escobar had much to do with the organization of the cartel. The Colombian version of The Godfather and even known as El Padrino Escobar worked to corrupt local police departments, pay off government officials, and keep the order amongst the cartel members. However, the Medellin Cartel was much more than just the escapades of Pablo Escobar.Through the years the cartel had multiple leaders, committed hundreds of crimes, and owned a fleet of planes, helicopters, yachts, and even two rumored submarines. From the beginning, the cartel was set up to become exactly what it was: the largest, most terrifying drug cartel in Colombian history. The Rise Of The Medellin CartelWikimedia CommonsEl Patrn, Pablo EscobarThe Medellin Cartels most famous member is probably Pablo Escobar.Known as the King of Cocaine, Escobar was the wealthiest criminal in history, at one point raking in $2.1 billion in personal income in one year. He was so rich he even had his own zoo, complete with hippos. By the time of Pablo Escobars death, he was worth approximately $30 billion, though he most likely had hidden assets that totaled more. While the world knew him as a vicious, dangerous criminal, the residents of Medellin, Colombia thought of him as a successful and generous businessman. Within the local cities, he had made a name for himself as a generous donor to the slums of Medellin, particularly the children of the poor. Escobar got his start in the late 70s when the cocaine trade took off. Following the drug movement of the 60s, demand for psychoactive drugs increased. Due to its tropical climate, Colombia became the number one grower of the coca plant, the plant from which cocaine is derived. Escobar entered the drug business by smuggling coca paste, the unrefined version of the plants leaves, into Colombia, then back out into America. He would refine the paste himself and hire mules to smuggle the resulting powder into the United States either in their luggage or in condoms filled with it. Eventually, Pablo Escobar teamed up with Carlos Lehder and George Jung, two fellow Medellin Cartel members who had expertise in flight trafficking. They organized flights into South Florida by way of the Bahamas, using small biplanes that could fly below the radar and land on unmarked dirt roads in the Everglades.Escobar would also enlist his cousin, Gustavo de Jesus Gaviria Rivero, to join the growing Medellin Cartel. For years, Rivero operated the cartel quietly behind Escobars flamboyant leadership. He developed the routes that the cartels used, and maintained order over them, while Escobar gallivanted made a name for himself.Wikimedia CommonsThe known trafficking routes of South American cartels throughout the 70s and 80s.Rivero was the one who thought up alternative measures when the governments began cracking down on drug smuggling. Rather than move to different, less effective routes, Rivero began hiding cocaine in shipments of things that were legal, such as fruits, clothing, and appliances. He would mix the drug into fruit pulp, cocoa powder, wine, and even clothing such as blue jeans. Once in the United States, trained chemists would extract the drug.Over time, the American government began to pick up on the Medelln Cartels movements and tricks. However, Rivero and Escobar were always one step ahead of everyone else. They constantly moved their channels, switching from the tourist-infested shores of the Bahamas to poverty-stricken Haiti, down to Panama. Eventually, from the interactions with the locals in these new channels, the Sinaloa, Juarez, and Tampico cartels were born. The Cartels Many CrimesGetty ImagesLuis Galan, a Colombian senator and presidential hopeful, who was murdered by the Medellin Cartel. As part of doing business, the Medellin Cartel was naturally involved in violence and crime that extended beyond drug smuggling. The exact numbers of murders carried out by Medellin Cartel members or on their orders is unknown, though some experts put the number at somewhere around 4,000.They werent just killing civilians or other drug cartel members either. At least 1,000 of them were Medellin police officers or journalists, while 200 were judges and Colombian government officials. They even killed Colombian presidential hopeful Luis Carlos Galn as he was about to walk on stage to give a speech in front of 10,000 people. In 1989, Escobar and the Medellin Cartel were responsible for the single deadliest criminal attack in Colombian history. In an attempt to assassinate presidential candidate Cesar Gaviria Trujillo, the cartel placed a bomb onboard Avianca Flight 203. Moments after it took off, the plane exploded over the town of Soacha, killing 107 people. In 1985, left-wing guerrillas from a movement known as M-19 stormed the Colombian Supreme Court in retaliation to the Supreme Courts study of the constitutionality of their extradition treaty with the U.S. M-19 was paid by an unknown group of people to destroy all files on Los Extraditables, the group of cartel members who were under threat of extradition. Ironically, most of Los Extraditables were members of the Medellin Cartel, including Escobar himself.Though many of their crimes were well-publicized, thousands of murders, kidnappings, and terrorist attacks went unreported, due to fear of retaliation or bribery to keep quiet. The Fall Of The Medellin CartelGetty ImagesA late 1980s drug bust, turning up pounds of cocaine from Colombia.By the early 1980s, cocaine had become an epidemic and the War on Drugs had been declared. Crack cocaine, a cheaper and more addictive alternative to the pure powder had ravaged Americas inner cities and sparked the government to increase pressure on Colombia to capture the kingpins namely Escobar and the rest of the Medellin Cartel. However, despite a formal extradition order from the United States, and increased Colombian police presence, Escobar managed to evade capture. He vowed never to surrender to the United States or anyone else, and continued to run his ring from inside Colombia.Running out of options, the newly organized Drug Enforcement Administration sent two officers, Javier Pea and Steve Murphy, down to Colombia, to assist the Colombian government in capturing Escobar and extraditing him to the U.S. Within days, Escobar had put a $300,000 hit out on Pea and Murphy. The two officers were immediately placed under watch by local authorities, unable to move about Medellin unsupervised. However, the bounties drove other organizations to up their search efforts, and soon the PEPES (People Persecuted by Pablo Escobar) was formed, a militant group determined to bring him to justice. In 1991, it seemed as if they would get their wish. Feeling pressure from the police, Los Pepes, and rival cartels, Escobar finally orchestrated his surrender. However, he was determined not to be incarcerated like a lowly drug mule.Instead, he set it up so that he could serve his time in La Catedral, a luxury prison of his own design which sat on a hill overlooking Medellin. Of course, being Pablo Escobar, he was able to escape La Catedral in no time and was back on the streets of Medellin trafficking drugs almost before authorities had realized what happened. Soon, however, evading arrest began to take a toll on Escobar. He soon became paranoid, turning to murder and violence quicker than before, eventually murdering two of his allies. His actions quickly turned even his closest confidants against him, and they began calling a police hotline, leaving tips as to his whereabouts. Wikimedia CommonsColombian police stand over the body of Pablo Escobar, whose death sparked the beginning of the end for the Medellin Cartel. Finally, one day after his 44th birthday, Pablo Escobar was taken down. He had made a mistake, ultimately a fatal one, by lingering too long on a phone call with his son, Juan Pablo Escobar. Police were able to track the signal and surround the house. As Escobar tried to escape to the rooftops, he was gunned down by Colombian authorities. Within moments, Pablo Escobar was dead.Though Escobar was gone, the Medellin Cartel was far from over. Their distribution networks, some of the most efficient in the world, are still in use, funneling cocaine from newer cartels to places like Sierra Leone, Barcelona, and Chicago. The city of Medellin, once ravaged by crime, hovering at roughly 6,000 homicides per year, now plays host to skyscrapers and highrise apartments. The economy has equalized, opening up to culture and art and lowering gang activity. The torment that the Medellin Cartel put the city through pushed it to become bigger, better and faster than before. Though crime still exists, the residents of the city claim it is stronger than ever before. After learning about the Medelln Cartel, check out these facts about Pablo Escobar.
