    The Asteroid Hunter
Somewhere out there, hurtling through space in the darkness, is an asteroid with our name on it. We just don't know which one yet. NASA's answer to that uncomfortable truth is NEO Surveyor, a purpose built infrared space telescope currently taking shape in laboratories across America, and scheduled for launch in 2027. The stakes, quite literally, could not be higher.

The True Story Of DArtagnan, The French Soldier Whose Life Was Fictionalized In The Three Musketeers
Marimarina/Wikimedia CommonsA statue of dArtagnan in Paris. The 19th-century novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas is one of the most beloved books of all time. It follows the adventures of a young man named dArtagnan and his friends, the musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. But while Dumas took many creative liberties with his story which he based on a fictional memoir called Mmoires de Monsieur dArtagnan dArtagnan was a real figure who lived in 17th-century France. His actual name was Charles de Batz de Castelmore, and like the dArtagnan of Dumas story, he lived a colorful, adventurous life. He was a soldier and later a musketeer who served under King Louis XIV.But though The Three Musketeers has a tidy ending, with dArtagnan given a prestigious promotion, the real-life dArtagnan had a more tragic fate. The Early Life Of Charles De Batz De CastelmoreThough scholars disagree on the exact year of his birth, Charles de Batz de Castelmore was born in the 1610s at the Chteau de Castelmore near Lupiac, France. He came from a noble but poor family, and he likely had a quiet childhood defined by hunting for pleasure, simple meals like salted pork and gruel, and limited educational instruction. Jibi44/Wikimedia CommonsChteau de Castelmore, where Charles de Batz de Castelmore was born between 1611 and 1615. Though he may not have spent much time in school, it seems that young Charles was instructed on how to fight. He would have also likely been regaled with stories of his relatives military prowess, and after his older brother left home to become a soldier, Charles soon followed. When he arrived in Paris in the 1630s, Charles de Batz de Castelmore started using his mothers family name, dArtagnan, likely because it had more influence. He first joined the French Guards, an infantry regiment. But he had his eye on the Musketeers of the Guard, the elite fighting company of Frances royal household. This renowned group was formed in 1622 by King Louis XIII, who served as the commander. The Musketeers drew young, brave men and dArtagnan wanted to be one of them. The Many Adventures Of The Famous MusketeerIn 1644, dArtagnan got his wish. He joined the Musketeers under the new king, Louis XIV, who was still a child at the time. Over the next decade, the regiment would be disbanded and then reformed, but dArtagnan remained an important asset to the crown. A seasoned soldier, he spent much of the 1640s serving Cardinal Mazarin, the chief minister. On the orders of Mazarin, dArtagnan was sent on a number of important secret missions, such as transporting sensitive intelligence across the country, relaying messages, and using his own judgment to assess strangers and situations. He traveled between the French court and distant battlefields, gathering intelligence, monitoring troop movements, and carrying orders to various armies.Public DomainA depiction of dArtagnan in The Viscount of Bragelonne, one of Alexandre Dumas sequels to The Three Musketeers. He earned the trust of Mazarin, especially because of his steadfast loyalty as the ministers popularity ebbed and flowed. This, in turn, earned dArtagnan the trust of Louis XIV. In 1661, the Musketeer was tasked with arresting Nicolas Fouquet.Fouquet, the kings superintendent of finances, had sparked the monarchs suspicion by throwing a lavish party to celebrate the construction of his new chteau. Louis believed that Fouquet could only have afforded the grand feast by stealing from the royal treasury and ordered his arrest.DArtagnan took him into custody and spent the next four years guarding his cell, as the king knew his loyal Musketeer couldnt be bribed to help Fouquet escape. Fouquet was ultimately sentenced to life in prison and died behind bars in 1680.In 1667, dArtagnan was promoted to captain-lieutenant of the Musketeers. While Louis XIV officially held the title of commander, dArtagnan was essentially the leader of the company. Sadly, his fulfilled dream wouldnt last long. How DArtagnan Died During The Siege Of MaastrichtFor a brief period in 1672, dArtagnan was appointed to serve as the governor of Lille, a city the French had seized from the Spanish Habsburgs. He was unhappy in the position and longed to return to battle. He got his wish once more in 1673, but it would prove lethal.DArtagnan was sent to fight in the Franco-Dutch War (1672 to 1678). On June 25, 1673, he came under heavy musket fire during the Siege of Maastricht. Some accounts say he was shot in the chest, while others claim a musket ball ripped through his throat. Regardless of his exact injuries, dArtagnan died on the battlefield that day.OT de Lupiac/Wikimedia CommonsA statue of dArtagnan near his birthplace in Lupiac, France. He was mourned widely, by both his fellow Musketeers and King Louis XIV, who wrote to his wife, Madame, I have lost dArtagnan, in whom I had the utmost confidence and who merited it in all occasions, according to France Mmoire.DArtagnans death is not described in The Three Musketeers, which ends with his promotion. But Dumas did write about it in The Viscount of Bragelonne, a sequel that takes place decades later.DArtagnan endeavored to raise himself, Dumas wrote. It was thought he had been knocked down without being wounded. A terrible cry broke from the group of his terrified officers; [dArtagnan] was covered with blood; the paleness of death ascended slowly to his noble countenance. In the confusion that followed, dArtagnan was buried in consecrated ground in Maastricht. But the exact location of his body was lost to time. Some historians suspected that the Musketeer had been buried beneath the citys St. Peter and Paul Church in Maastricht, but it wasnt until 2026 that evidence emerged to support this theory. During restorative work of the churchs floor, workers came across human remains. Though the skull had been shattered, the neck and vertebrae were in perfect condition, and there were a number of positive signs that the skeleton belonged to dArtagnan. Stichting 6213 HLThe skeleton found at St. Peter and Paul Church in 2026 that may belong to dArtagnan. There was a French coin from that time in the grave, Jos Valke, the churchs deacon, told Dutch media. And the bullet that killed him lay at chest level. Exactly as described in the history books. The evidence is very strong.Though more tests are needed to confirm the identity of the skeleton, the discovery of dArtagnans remains would be hugely significant. Since his death in 1673, he has faded almost into myth; thanks to Alexandre Dumas and The Three Musketeers, his fictional life is far better known than his actual accomplishments. But while some parts of dArtagnans biography are lost to time, the story of his rise from a poor noblemans son to the most beloved Musketeer in French history remains as compelling as ever. After reading about dArtagnan, known during his life as Charles de Batz de Castelmore, discover the wild story of the Storming of the Bastille, the violent protest that helped lead to the French Revolution. Or, go inside the strange and terrifying legend of the Beast of Gvaudan, the mysterious monster that terrorized the countryside of 18th-century France. The post The True Story Of DArtagnan, The French Soldier Whose Life Was Fictionalized In The Three Musketeers appeared first on All That's Interesting.

The Remains Of A World War 2 Tank Were Just Found Right Beneath A Familys Garden In Poland
Bats Exploration and Search GroupThe group uncovered four wheels, some of the tanks track, a gearbox with an axle, and a wealth of small parts that have not yet been identified. In the Polish village of wierczw, locals often heard a legend about an enormous tank that had been buried under a nearby houses garden. For years, it was dismissed as just that,a legend. But a search group recently decided to investigate further and they discovered that the legend was true. After using metal detectors to examine a residential garden, the group turned up the remains of a Soviet tank. It likely broke down in wierczw in the 1950s, after which the property owner buried it.After that point, the story of the tank passed into legend until now.The World War II-Era Soviet Tank Found Under A Polish GardenAccording to Zwiadowca Historii a Polish news outlet that focuses on metal detecting, historical exploration, and artifacts from World War II the story of the tank indeed began with a mere legend. In the village of wierczw, many locals had heard the story of the tank in the garden. But when Mariusz Kakulak of the Bats Exploration and Search Group received a call from someone who said that they had once seen the tank and believed that it was buried on their familys property, he decided to investigate.Armed with his metal detector, Kakulak headed out to the residential garden in question, where he found two youths at work. According to Zwiadowca Historii, they knew the legend, and had already dug up half the garden. The trio teamed up and before long, Kakulaks metal detector began to light up.Bats Exploration and Search GroupBit by bit, the tank was excavated from the ground beneath the residential garden. As they continued to dig, they began to find pieces of metal. But the metal wasnt just leftover debris. It quickly became clear that the diggers had come across the legendary tank buried in the garden.Kakulak was sure to give credit to everyone involved, saying, Todays discovery is primarily thanks to two teenagers Antek and Patryk who tirelessly dug into the ground, accurately pinpointing the location of the vehicles remains.Bats Exploration and Search GroupThe tank had reportedly broken down on the property in the 1950s.The tank appears to be a Soviet T-34 or IS tank, both of which were used by the Soviet Army during World War II. The diggers have found multiple parts of the tank, including a gearbox, four wheels, gears and bearings, and several other smaller parts that have not yet been identified. And Kakulak thinks that there may be more to find: According to the rest of the story, there may still be a turret with a barrel from that tank somewhere nearby. But how exactly did the tank get here in the first place? The History Behind The Tank In The GardenIt doesnt seem that the tank ended up under the garden because of a battle during World War II. Rather, local legend states that the tank broke down in wierczw sometime in the 1950s, years after the war had ended, when Poland was a satellite state of the Soviet Union.Bats Exploration and Search GroupMultiple parts of the Soviet tank have been dug up, including a gearbox, four wheels, gears and bearings, and a number of smaller, unidentified pieces. In the 1950s, a tank passed through here, said Patrycja Suchorska, who first heard the story from her grandparents. Quite simply, the vehicle broke down on our property. Soldiers detached the damaged part and left it on one of the properties.According to Suchorska family lore, the tank was left on the property, and Patrycjas grandfather, Piotr, realized that it was too heavy for him to move. With the help of his sons, he dug a hole, and pushed the tank inside. Over the years, the story of the tank in the garden then faded into myth. But as the story of this tank goes to show, local legends can be based in truth. Sometimes it only takes a metal detector, patience, and some help to dig up lost secrets. After reading about the tank found beneath a garden in Poland, go inside the surprising story of Russias Tsar Tank, its enormous, tricycle-shaped tank from World War II. Then, learn about the Winged Hussars, the fierce winged cavalrymen from Polish history. The post The Remains Of A World War 2 Tank Were Just Found Right Beneath A Familys Garden In Poland appeared first on All That's Interesting.

Man Shows The Amityville Horror And Black Dahlia Crime Scenes Then And Now: Both Look Perfectly Normal Today
@j_and_d_productions TikTok/JOSHUA COLEMAN UnsplashContent creator @j_and_d_productions showed then-and-now photos of the Black Dahlia crime scene and the Amityville Horror house. On the surface, a given home on a certain quiet street may look like any other modest house with a trimmed lawn and a car parked in the driveway so much so that youd never guess the horrors that could have once happened there. For instance, even though the locations of the Black Dahlia crime scene and the Amityville Horror house look relatively normal today, these places have positively terrifying histories.A TikTok from content creator @j_and_d_productions recently racked up 2.4 million views showing these crime scene photos from decades past, followed by present-day images of those same locations. As the caption reads, Both look perfectly normal today. The Black Dahlia Crime Scene: A Vacant Lot That Became Infamous OvernightOn the morning of January 15, 1947, a mother out for a walk with her child in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles stumbled upon what she initially thought was a mannequin. In fact, it was the body of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short.Bettmann/Getty ImagesElizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, was just 22 years old when she was gruesomely murdered in Los Angeles in 1947.Short had moved to Los Angeles just six months before her death, and had been working as a waitress while hoping to break into acting, despite not having any known acting credits. The details of her murder remain disturbing to this day.Her body was severed at the waist, completely drained of blood, and carefully posed in a vacant lot. The killer also slashed the corners of her mouth toward her ears, leaving what is known as a Glasgow smile. Not a drop of blood was found at the scene, indicating that she had been killed elsewhere and then dumped there.Getty ImagesA sheet covers the horrific mutilation of Elizabeth Shorts body. The press immediately descended upon the scene, branding her the Black Dahlia due to her reported preference for black clothing, and as a reference to the 1946 film noir The Blue Dahlia. What followed was one of the most sensationalized investigations in LAPD history. At one point, 750 investigators were on the case, interviewing more than 150 potential suspects. Officers heard more than 60 confessions during the initial investigation, but none were considered legitimate. The case remains open to this day, with more than 500 confessions tallied since. Eighty years later, we still dont know who killed the Black Dahlia. The Amityville Horror House: A Suburban Home That Cant Escape Its PastOn November 13, 1974, 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his own family his parents and four siblings as they slept in their beds in Amityville, New York.Suffolk County Police DepartmentA mugshot of Ronald DeFeo Jr. taken on November 14, 1974, following his arrest for the Amityville murders. He confessed and submitted an insanity defense, claiming he had heard voices urging him to kill, but his defense failed. DeFeo was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to six consecutive 25-years-to-life sentences. He died in prison in 2021 at age 69.Wikimedia CommonsThe Amityville Horror House, a year before the infamous DeFeo murders took place. The house where the Amityville murders happened then sat empty for 13 months. In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz bought it at a reduced price of $80,000 DeFeo family furniture included. However, the Lutzes lasted just 28 days before fleeing, claiming that they had been terrorized by paranormal activity, including swarming flies, demonic voices, and green slime oozing from the walls.Their account was the basis of Jay Ansons 1977 bestseller The Amityville Horror, which was adapted into a blockbuster film two years later. What the book and movie didnt advertise was that DeFeos own defense lawyer, William Weber, later admitted to People that he and the Lutzes had fabricated this haunting story. We created this horror story over many bottles of wine, Weber told People.Paul Briden/Alamy Stock PhotoThe house where the Amityville Horror took place, as seen in July 2012.None of that has stopped the tourists. Subsequent owners have done everything they can to make the Amityville Horror house less recognizable. The dark exterior was repainted in a pale off-white. The swimming pool was filled in. The distinctive quarter-circle third-story windows rendered on the original movie poster as a pair of fiery orange eyes were replaced with ordinary square ones. The address was officially changed to 108 Ocean Avenue. But still, visitors have come, and the town of Amityville has grown weary of the attention. We just wish it would go away, one longtime local told A&E. The only horror about that house is the fact that a kid killed his whole family there. Two Addresses, One Uncomfortable TruthWhat the TikTok captures is that the places where terrible things happen arent always obvious. Grass grows over a vacant lot. Fresh paint covers old exteriors. New families move in and try to make a home. Life continues. @j_and_d_productions THEN: In 1947, Elizabeth Short (The Black Dahlia) was found in a vacant lot in Leimert Park. In 1974, the DeFeo tragedy changed 108 Ocean Avenue forever. NOW: The lot on Norton Ave is a quiet residential street, and the iconic eye windows of the Amityville Horror house have been replaced to deter onlookers. Both look perfectly normal today, but the energy remains. #fyp #foryou #xyzbca #blackdahlia its just a cigarette and it cannot be that bad Full Throttlers All Thats Interesting reached out to @j_and_d_productions for comment via TikTok direct message and comment.
