Scientists Just Identified A 60-Foot Octopus With Bone-Crushing Jaws That Ruled The Seas During The Cretaceous
Yohei Utsuki/Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Hokkaido UniversityAn illustration of the fearsome apex predator known as Nanaimoteuthis haggarti.Stories have long been told about the Kraken, the fearsome giant sea monster of centuries-old myth that could wrap its tentacles around an entire ship and drown scores of sailors in the process. And while the Kraken may be make-believe, a group of scientists have just made new findings about a prehistoric giant octopus from the Late Cretaceous that could grow to similarly monstrous proportions. The octopus, known as Nanaimoteuthis haggarti, lived between 86 and 72 million years ago. Scientists now believe that it could grow to be 62 feet long bigger than the average city bus and as large as most megalodons. Whats more, researchers also suggest it was an apex predator capable of devouring sharks using jaws that could crush bone.New Analysis Of Fossils Taken From These Giant Prehistoric OctopusesThe new insights about Nanaimoteuthis haggarti, which were detailed in a study published in Science, were made by a group of researchers from Japan and Germany. They set out to study the size of octopuses during the Cretaceous Period (145 million to 66 million years ago), but needed to be creative in their approach. This is because soft-bodied invertebrates like octopuses leave little trace in the fossil record. So, researchers instead looked for these creatures hard beaks, which are more able to become fossilized.Hokkaido UniversityThe lower jaw of an adult N. Haggarti octopus, which suggests that the octopus itself could grow to an impressive size, up to 62 feet in length.Paleontologists started with 15 fossilized beaks from Late Cretaceous deposits in Japan and Vancouver Island in Canada, and also used artificial intelligence to detect fossilized octopus jaws in Japanese sediment samples. With this method, they were able to identify 12 additional jaws, all of which they examined to determine the size of the octopuses themselves. What they found was truly astounding. The researchers identified two species of octopus (previously thought to be vampire squids) known as N. jeletzkyi and N. haggarti. N. jeletzkyi lived roughly 100 and 72 million years ago, and was about the same size as todays giant Pacific octopus (roughly 10 feet to 25 feet long). But N. haggarti, which lived between 86 and 72 million years ago, was even bigger: researchers believe that it could have grown to between 23 to 62 feet, making it one of the largest marine animals of its day. These new insights about the size of octopuses during the Late Cretaceous period are impressive. But scientists are also intrigued by the jaws themselves, which suggest that N. haggarti was an apex predator. How Nanaimoteuthis haggarti Dominated Ocean Life Tens Of Millions Of Years AgoAs part of their study, the researchers also looked at the octopuses jaws. They found that while the jaws of younger octopuses were intact, the jaws of the older octopuses were badly chipped and cracked. According to the study, some of the jaws had lost up to 10 percent of their total length. This suggests that the octopuses were capable of eating hard prey consisting of shells and bones. This prey could have included ammonites and bony fish, as well as even larger marine animals like sharks, plesiosaurs, and mosasaurs.ScienceThe enormous size of Nanaimoteuthis as compared to those of other formidable sea creatures from both the prehistoric era and the present. This extensive wear suggests dynamic crushing of hard skeletons, the researchers wrote. With a calculated total length of [23 to 62 feet], these octopuses may represent the largest invertebrates thus described, rivaling contemporaneous giant marine reptiles. Our findings show that powerful jaws, and the loss of superficial skeletons, convergently transformed cephalopods and marine vertebrates into huge, intelligent predators.Though not everyone agrees with the studys findings it can be difficult to make assumptions based on beaks alone the researchers have painted a fearsome picture of this prehistoric apex predator. Tens of millions of years ago, Nanaimoteuthis haggarti likely stalked the oceans, a sprawling dark shadow capable of wrapping its tentacles around its prey and breaking it down into bite-sized pieces with its powerful jaws.So what happened to these ocean monsters?Scientists remain unsure. Though many varieties of octopus of course exist today, the Nanaimoteuthis has long been extinct. However, more evidence about their rise and fall may be out there, waiting to be discovered in the oceans depths. After reading about this giant octopus that lived tens of millions of years ago, discover the stories of some of Earths most unbelievable prehistoric animals. Then, learn about the Dumbo Octopus, the small but formidable cephalopod of the deep sea.The post Scientists Just Identified A 60-Foot Octopus With Bone-Crushing Jaws That Ruled The Seas During The Cretaceous appeared first on All That's Interesting.

The Daughter Of Robert Blake Speaks Out 24 Years After Bonny Lee Bakleys Murder
TikTok/@rose.lenoreRose Lenore Sophia Blake has been speaking out about her mothers murder on TikTok.The daughter of Bonny Lee Bakley and actor Robert Blake said her life was meant to turn out differently. Sometimes I think about how I was born to be a nepo baby but then my bio dad (actor) had my mother murdered so now Im just here, the TikToker, Rose Lenore Sophia Blake (@rose.lenore), says in the text overlay of a viral video that has racked up over 900,000 views. She follows that up with a story time video laying out the broad strokes of a case that captivated America in the early 2000s. Her biological father, she explains, was a well-known actor named Robert Blake, best remembered for his role in the 1970s TV crime drama Baretta. Her mother, Bonny Lee Bakley, was fatally shot on May 4, 2001, while sitting in Blakes car outside Vitellos, a restaurant in Studio City, California, after the couple had dinner. Rose Lenore was 11 months old at the time. Blake was arrested for the murder, tried, and acquitted in 2005 but was found civilly liable for Bakleys death and initially ordered to pay her family $30 million. He died in March 2023 at age 89.Rose Lenore says that whoever actually pulled the trigger is likely still alive, which is why she states she wont publicly share her theories That would not be safe. One Of Hollywoods Most Sensational Unsolved MurdersBlake was originally a child actor who appeared in the Our Gang comedies in the 1930s and 40s before growing up to star in the acclaimed 1967 film In Cold Blood and later winning an Emmy for Baretta.Public DomainRobert Blake starred in Baretta in the mid-1970s.He met Bakley, a New Jersey woman with a complicated past, at a Los Angeles jazz club in 1999.Bakley had been married as many as 10 times and had a reputation as a con artist who used aliases to scam men she met through classified ads. She had pursued relationships with Jerry Lee Lewis and Dean Martin and had been romantically involved with Christian Brando, the son of Marlon Brando. When Bakley gave birth to a baby girl in 2000, she initially named Brando as the father, but a DNA test revealed the infant was Robert Blakes daughter. He married Bakley because of the child, but with that kind of start, its not surprising that the couples relationship was allegedly troubled from the beginning.Courtesy Harland Braun via ZUMA Press WireBonny Lee Bakley was murdered in 2001, but the case officially remains unsolved. On the night of May 4, 2001, the pair had dinner at Vitellos. Blake later told police he had left Bakley alone in their parked car while he went back inside to retrieve a gun (for which he had a legal permit) hed accidentally left at the table. When he returned, he said, he found her slumped over with two gunshot wounds. A bystander called 911, but Bakley later died from her injuries at the hospital. She was 44 years old.It took 11 months for the police to arrest Blake on murder charges. The criminal trial that followed lasted three months in early 2005 and became one of the eras biggest courtroom dramas. Two stuntmen testified that Blake had tried to hire them to kill Bakley before her death, but the defense attacked their credibility based on their histories of drug use. While gunshot residue was found on Blakes hands, a defense expert argued the quantity was far too small to indicate he had fired a gun. The murder weapon, a pistol with its serial number filed off, was found in a nearby trash bin, but the owner could never be traced. In the end, the jury voted 11 to one to acquit Blake on the murder charge. The jury said the prosecutors didnt prove the gun was in Blakes hand. As such, the murder of Bonny Lee Bakley remains officially unsolved.A Case That Still Has No AnswersDuring the trial, Blakes defense team pointed fingers at Christian Brando, who had been recorded warning Bakley, Youre lucky somebody aint out there to put a bullet in your head, CNN reported in 2002.Police PhotoBonny Lee Bakley was shot twice in Robert Blakes car outside of Vitellos restaurant. Brando was not in Los Angeles the night of the murder and was never charged. He died in 2008, taking whatever he knew with him.Blakes acquittal didnt spare him from financial repercussions. A civil jury did find him liable for Bakleys death and ordered him to pay $30 million to her children. He declared bankruptcy, and that amount was later slashed to $15 million by an appeals court. Blake ultimately spent his final years out of the spotlight. He uploaded a series of reflective YouTube videos between 2019 and 2020 and reconnected with Rose Lenore, who had been raised by Blakes older daughter after her mothers murder. In a 2019 television appearance, Robert Blakes daughter Rose Lenore said she called him Robert, not Dad, and that she hadnt pressed him for answers about her mothers death. I dont choose a side because I dont know any better than anybody else, she said at the time. @rose.lenore Like what am I even doing #robertblake orihinal na tunog Dere >< Dere >< Rose Lenore Sophia Blake declined to comment on the matter. Why The Coconut Crab Is The Crustacean Of Your Worst Nightmares
Monstrous. That was the only word Charles Darwin could find to describe the coconut crab when he first saw one for himself.Of course, anyone whos ever seen this animal can tell right away that its no ordinary crustacean. As the largest land crab in the world, the coconut crabs size alone is intimidating. It weighs up to nine pounds, stretches three feet long, and can carry more than six times its own body weight.Epic Wildlife/YouTubeA coconut crab, also known as a robber crab, climbs a trash can in search of something to eat.Back in Darwins time, many ominous tales spread about coconut crabs. Some told stories about them climbing a tree and dangling from it for hours holding on with nothing more than a single pincer. Others claimed that their claws could break through a coconut. And some believed that they could tear a human being apart, limb from limb.Ever skeptical, Darwin didnt believe most of what hed heard. But eerily, none of it was really an exaggeration. Since then, weve found out that every story about what a coconut crab can do is more or less true. Why The Coconut Crab Is So PowerfulWikimedia CommonsThose who have been pinched by a coconut crab say it hurts like eternal hell. The coconut crab sometimes called a robber crab boasts powerful pincers, which are some of the most dangerous weapons in the animal kingdom. Experts say a pinch from this crab can rival a lions bite. So theres no question that they can do some terrifying things with their claws. But the good news for humans is that the crabs dont usually use their claws on us. As the name suggests, the coconut crabs main source of food is coconuts. And since most of these creatures live on islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, they usually have no trouble finding their favorite food.Still, its a bit unnerving to watch a coconut crab break open a coconut with nothing more than its bare claws. Its even more unsettling when you learn that coconuts arent the only things that they can tear apart. As omnivorous creatures, coconut crabs are willing to eat both plants and animals. Theyve been known to kill birds, feast on kittens, and rip apart pig carcasses. Eerily, theyve also been known to practice cannibalism and they will rarely hesitate to eat other coconut crabs. In short, almost nothing is off the menu for a robber crab. Theyll even eat their own exoskeletons. Like most crabs, they shed their exoskeletons to grow new ones. But when their old, molted shell falls off, they dont leave it behind in the wild like other crabs. Instead, they eat the whole thing. How The Robber Crab Gets Its FoodWikimedia CommonsCoconut crabs on Bora Bora, pictured in 2006.Thanks to their strong pincers, these crustaceans can climb just about anything they see from the branches of a tree to the chains of a fence. Despite the coconut crabs size, it can hang off an object for hours. This is one of the main ways they get their food especially their beloved coconuts. By climbing to the tops of coconut trees and knocking the fruit off, they can treat themselves to a nice meal once they climb down. But as one might expect, they dont just climb trees to get coconuts. They also scale branches to hunt for birds attacking them at the top of the tree and then dragging them down to the burrows where they live.In 2017, scientist Mark Laidre described their attack strategy in horrific detail. It was on an island where the birds stayed at the very tops of the trees to avoid coconut crabs. However, they werent always able to escape. In the middle of the night, I observed a coconut crab attack and kill an adult red-footed booby, said Laidre, a biologist who has studied the crustacean. The booby had been sleeping on a low-lying branch, less than a meter up the tree. The crab slowly climbed up and grabbed the boobys wing with its claw, breaking the bone and causing the booby to fall to the ground. But the robber crab wasnt quite done torturing its prey yet. The crab then approached the bird, grabbing and breaking its other wing, Laidre continued. No matter how much the booby struggled or pecked at the hard shell of the crab, it couldnt get it to let go.Then, the swarm came. Five more coconut crabs came to the site within 20 minutes, likely cueing in on the blood, Laidre recalled. As the booby lay paralyzed, the crabs fought, eventually tearing the bird apart. All the crabs then took a hunk of meat from the mutilated birds body and quickly carried it back to their burrows so they could have a feast.Did Coconut Crabs Eat Amelia Earhart?Wikimedia CommonsAmelia Earhart, pictured here shortly before her disappearance in 1937. While her exact fate has never been determined, some believe that Amelia Earhart was eaten by coconut crabs after crashing on an uninhabited island.Coconut crabs dont usually try to hurt people, but there have been exceptions. Humans are their only predators (aside from other coconut crabs), and when theyre targeted, they will strike back. Some people who live on islands in the Pacific Ocean have found that out the hard way. While searching for coconut husks, some locals have made the mistake of putting their fingers into the crabs burrows. In response, the crabs would strike giving people the worst pinch of their lives. So theres no question that a robber crab would attack humans if provoked. But would it eat one of us? If so, that leads us to one of historys most bizarre mysteries: Did coconut crabs eat Amelia Earhart? In 1940, researchers found a fractured skeleton on Nikumaroro Island that had been torn apart. Its believed that this may have been the body of Amelia Earhart the famous female aviator who disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean in 1937. And if that body indeed belonged to Earhart, then some experts think she may have been consumed by coconut crabs. Its worth noting that the mystery of what happened to Amelia Earhart has never been completely solved. But according to this theory, Earhart crashed on the uninhabited island and was left either dead or dying on its beach. Like the red-footed booby, Amelia Earharts blood may have lured the coconut crabs who were living in the islands underground burrows.A team of scientists ran a test in 2007 to see what the coconut crabs would have done to Amelia Earhart if they found her body on the beach. They left a pig carcass at the site where Earhart may have crashed.Just as they imagined might have happened to Earhart, the robber crabs emerged and tore the pig to shreds. Then, they dragged the flesh down to their underground lairs and ate it right off the bones. If that indeed happened to Earhart, then she may have been the only person on Earth who was eaten by coconut crabs. But as horrific as this hypothetical death sounds, you probably dont have to worry about something like this happening to you.The truth is that coconut crabs often have more reason to fear humans than the other way around. Can You Eat Coconut Crabs?Wikimedia CommonsAs one might imagine, the coconut crabs size means that this crustacean has plenty of meat. For all the talk about this animals terrifying eating habits, some adventurous foodies might be curious as to whether they can eat coconut crabs themselves. As it turns out, coconut crabs are indeed edible for humans. On some islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, these crabs are served as a delicacy or sometimes even as an aphrodisiac. So many locals have enjoyed eating these crustaceans for centuries now. And visitors on the islands have also enjoyed giving them a try. Even Charles Darwin once admitted that the crabs were very good to eat.One way that locals on the Atafu atoll prepare this crab is by making a pile of coconut fronds, putting the crustaceans on top, covering them with more fronds, and then lighting the whole pile on fire. Then, they rinse the crabs in the ocean, put them on plates weaved from more fronds, and use coconuts to break open the shells of the crabs to get to the meat. The coconut crab is said to taste buttery and sweet. Interestingly enough, the abdominal sack is reportedly the best part of the crab. To some, it tastes slightly nutty while others swear it tastes just like peanut butter. Some eat the crab with coconut, while others enjoy the crustacean by itself. Considering the coconut crabs size, it makes a pretty filling meal on its own. However, just because you can eat them doesnt necessarily mean that you should. In recent years, the overhunting and over-harvesting of coconut crabs have led to fears that they may be threatened or even endangered. In addition, a few coconut crabs may be dangerous to eat if the animals have fed on certain toxic plants. While most people eat the crustaceans without a problem, cases of coconut crab poisoning have occurred. But considering how scary these animals are when theyre alive, it almost seems fitting that theres a bit of a risk consuming them after theyre dead. From the coconut crabs massive size to its powerful claws, theres no question that its one of the most terrifying and unique creatures on Earth. And for hundreds of years, this crustacean has certainly left a big impression on anyone lucky enough or unlucky enough to encounter it.After learning about the coconut crab, take a look at the craziest types of animal camouflage. Then, check out the most dangerous animals on Earth. The post Why The Coconut Crab Is The Crustacean Of Your Worst Nightmares appeared first on All That's Interesting.
