How the Pueblo Revolt Became the Native Uprising That Expelled the Spanish for 12 Years
Through methods of coercion and conversion, the Spanish had what seemed to be a firm grip on Nuevo Mxico (the American Southwest) in the 17th century. After decades of being forced to pay tribute in labor and goods, the Pueblo people rose up against their Spanish overlords and struck a stunning blow, achieving the most successful Native American victory in an uprising against colonial forces in North American history. The Pueblo Under the SpanishStatue of Juan de Oate, conquistador and governor of New Mexico from 1598 to 1606. Source: Flickr/Wikimedia CommonsFrom the mid-16th century and continuing for a century, Spanish conquistadors made incursions into what is now New Mexico. Beginning with Francisco Coronados brutal campaign in 1540, violent confrontations and exploitative policies over the decades that followed took a huge toll on the Pueblo people, who suffered under the well-armed Spanish onslaught. As the Spanish tightened their grip on Nuevo Mxico in the 17th century, they implemented the Encomienda system, which exploited the Native American population. Not far off from slavery, Pueblo people suffered forced labor and had to pay tribute in the form of food and textiles. The Spanish further restricted the Pueblo from access to arable farmland, leaving the native populace perilously close to starvation.Adding to this dynamic were the efforts of Franciscan friars to convert the Pueblo to Christianity, disrupting Native American traditions and beliefs. Considered heretical, kivas, rooms of religious significance, were wrecked, and sacred objects were seized and destroyed in an attempt to obliterate local religion. The San Estvan del Rey Mission, which began construction in 1629 with Acoma slave labor. Source: Flickr/Wikimedia CommonsThe Pueblo settlements were independent from one another and were effectively separate nations. As a result, organizing resistance proved to be difficult. Nevertheless, rebellions were frequent, and the Spanish response was heavy-handed. One such rebellion resulted in the Acoma Massacre in 1599, in which 800 to 1000 Acoma people were slaughtered. The survivors were either sold into slavery or mutilated by having a foot cut off. Such was the brutality that even King Phillip III was outraged by these acts and recalled Juan de Oate, who had led the attack, and stripped him of his land and titles.Catalysts for RebellionBust of Popay. Source: Smithsonian/Loan from Virgil Ortiz, Cochiti PuebloFor 20 years before the Pueblo Rebellion, various acts significantly contributed to the breaking point where confrontation was inevitable. In the 1670s, drought came to the region and caused widespread famine. Both Pueblo and Spanish suffered under the harsh conditions while also being targets for Apache raids. The Spanish had to dispatch a considerable force to deal with this threat. However, the Spanish assault on Pueblo tradition continued unabated. In 1675, Governor Juan Francisco Trevio had 47 medicine men arrested and charged with sorcery. Three were hanged, while one committed suicide before he could be executed. The others were whipped and given prison sentences.Incensed by these events, Puebloans marched on Santa Fe and demanded the release of the prisoners. With Spanish soldiers on campaign against the Apache, Trevio had little option but to accede. One of the released prisoners was a Tewa leader from Ohkay Ohwinge (San Juan Pueblo) named Popay. This experience helped elevate him to prominence, and he became the leader of the revolt that followed in 1680.PoPays Plan Set Into MotionTaos Pueblo. Source: Flickr/Wikimedia CommonsAfter he was released, Popay headed north to Taos Pueblo, where he spent the next years secretly planning a way to defeat the Spanish and restore Native American sovereignty in the region. This was a monumental effort in logistics and planning, as the Pueblo people were scattered in dozens of autonomous settlements and spoke no fewer than six mutually unintelligible languages. Spanish was thus used as a lingua franca. To make matters even more difficult, the Pueblo had been outlawed from using horses, and doing so would have brought unwanted attention to Popays plans. The strategy was for each pueblo to rise up against the Spanish in their immediate surroundings and then march on Santa Fe, coalescing into a bigger force as they did so. To time the uprising, Popay delivered knotted cords to each chief, who would untie a knot each day until there were no knots left. This would signal the start of the uprising. Two of the messengers were captured on August 9, putting the entire plan in jeopardy, and Popay launched the revolt early, on August 10, 1680.The RebellionDetail of a mural by Loren Mozley in the US Courthouse, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Source: Wikimedia CommonsAlthough several remote Hopi Pueblos followed the original plan, as they didnt receive the message of starting early, the rebellion was well-timed, and dozens of pueblos rose up in unison. According to some sources, there were even Apache and Navajo who participated in the uprising against the Spanish.Popays forces seized horses to prevent the Spanish from fleeing immediately. The roads to Santa Fe were cut off, haciendas were burned, and the water supplies were severed. Hundreds of settlers were killed, including women and children, and many of the survivors fled to Santa Fe. In response to the brutal methods of religious conversion, Popays forces burned churches and killed priests and religious attendants. They then marched on Santa Fe to strike a final blow against the colonizers. After more than a week of being besieged, the Spanish were forced into a humiliating retreat, with the remaining 2,000 settlers moving south towards Mexico. Governor Antonio de Otermn gathered all his men and sallied outside the walls of Santa Fe, inflicting significant losses on the Puebloans and forcing them back. Using this opportunity, the Spanish evacuated the settlement. This group included many Puebloan hostages and those who had converted to Catholicism. Perhaps as a show of mercy, the Puebloans shadowed the retreating Spaniards, but did not attack or block their passage. Another group of refugees from Isleta Pueblo also traveled south, and the two groups met up on September 6.An Unhappy VictoryThe ruins of a Spanish church in Pecos National Historic Park. Source: Wikimedia CommonsFor 12 years, the Puebloans lived unharassed by Spanish occupation, but the thrill of victory was marred by contentious demands issued by Popay. While the stories are difficult to verify, the common belief is that, acting on his will to return Pueblo land to what it was before the Spanish arrived, Popay ordered a cleansing of all Catholic religion and Spanish culture in the territory. He also ordered the dismissal of marriages by Catholic rites, demanding that men take new wives according to the old traditions. Popay rejected everything the Spanish had brought, even the things that had made life easier, and for many, this was too much. He even demanded the destruction of Spanish crops, including wheat and barley.Popays demands were ignored by many of the Pueblo settlements, and he garnered the reputation of a tyrant. The drought continued, and so did Apache and Navajo raids, this time without whatever protection the Spanish provided.Having lost his authority, Popay was deposed by a Puebloan council about a year after the revolt, but was re-elected shortly before his death around 1688. His vision of a united Pueblo people was fractured, and in 1692, the Spanish would return with their own visions of conquest. The Return of the SpanishStatue of Diego de Vargas. Source: Flickr/Wikimedia CommonsThe Spanish made several incursions into Nuevo Mxico in the 1680s, but failed against the unified Pueblo people. In 1692, however, another attempt was made in force and met with success. Leading the Spanish efforts was Diego de Vargas, who had already been given the governorship of Nuevo Mxico. In August, he led the Spanish into Santa Fe unopposed.Despite the brutal reign of the Spanish 12 years earlier, Vargas was welcomed by some pueblos, and negotiations for Spanish rule resulted in the Spanish guaranteeing a lot more respect for the Puebloans. The Spanish had learnt from their previous administration and did not want to provoke further confrontation.Nevertheless, over the years, Vargas entrenched Spanish control, which was met with resistance, and confrontations were not uncommon. Of note was the incident on December 16, 1693, when 70 Puebloan warriors and hundreds of their family members blocked Vargas and his troops from entering Santa Fe. Vargas ordered his men to open fire. The Puebloans surrendered, and the warriors who had not been killed were executed, while their family members were forced into servitude for ten years.Another uprising in 1696 was unmercifully crushed, and many Puebloans fled to join other Native American peoples outside of Spanish control, especially on the Great Plains.A historic marker for the pueblo of Tuf Shurn Tui. Source: Wikimedia CommonsThe Hopi, however, managed to remain free of Spanish control because of their geographic isolation. Spanish attempts to negotiate deals with them came to nought, and the Hopi retained their independence. From a religious perspective, the Franciscans significantly scaled back their attempts at conversion and their desire for a theocracy, learning that to impose such severe methods on the Puebloans would result in priests being slaughtered as they had been before. Thus, the Puebloans, although under subsequent Spanish control, had more religious freedom, and traditional practices that had returned under Popay remained.Scars on the back of a statue of Popay in Ohkay Owingeh. Source: Wikimedia CommonsThe Pueblo Revolt experienced success for 12 years, and brought with it its own problems for the Pueblo people. It stands, however, as an act of courageous defiance and is an example of the resilience of the Native American people and their will to resist.

    Lemon Poppyseed Butter Swim Biscuits
These Lemon Poppyseed Butter Swim Biscuits are soft, sweet biscuits baked in melted butter and topped with a homemade sweet lemon glaze. No rolling or biscuit cutter needed!Spring Butter Dip Biscuit RecipeThese Lemon Poppyseed Butter Swim Biscuits are perfect for spring! Theyre full of bright lemon flavor and theyre insanely easy to make. These buttery biscuits are another variation of my famous Butter Dip Biscuits (a.k.a. Butter Swim Biscuits). Ive made sooo many versions over the last 15 years (seriously, I have 18 different variations of these!) and I was so happy to perfect this one. My favorite thing about these biscuits is that you dont need a biscuit cutter or rolling pin!Frequently Asked Questions:What are Butter Swim Biscuits? If you havent seen any of my other variations, I love making these things. Butter swim biscuits are an easy biscuit recipe where the batter is baked directly in melted butter instead of cutting butter into the dough. As the biscuits bake, the butter creates crispy golden edges while keeping the inside soft and tender. Whats the best way to melt the butter? When melting the butter for the bottom of the pan, make sure to use the melt setting on the microwave if you have it. If not, melt the butter directly in the pan in the preheated oven. If you try to microwave the butter using the regular setting, it will likely explode and create a huge mess. Can I use a metal baking dish? I dont suggest doing so. I know we generally think of metal baking pans as the best for baking, but in this case I prefer Pyrex or ceramic. Metal baking dishes can heat up the butter and cause it to burn too quickly, as the biscuits are still baking and would ruin them. I like to stick to glass or ceramic baking dishes when possible for these biscuits. You can certainly use metal, just be careful and make sure you are baking them on a middle rack, not a top rack and keep an eye on them. Can I make thinner biscuits? If youre looking for thinner biscuits, you can cut the recipe in half or use a larger packing dish (you may have to adjust baking time). These biscuits are normally big, thick, and fluffy. Whats the best way to store leftover biscuits? These biscuits are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days on in the refrigerator for 5. Can you freeze Lemon Poppyseed Butter Swim Biscuits? These can also be frozen in a sealed container for 2-3 months. To reheat, bake at 350F for 5-10 minutes or until warmed through. Ingredients Needed: (See Recipe Card Below For The Full Recipe)all-purpose flour spooned and leveled. I like to measure my flour by scooping from the bag or container with a spoon, not using the measuring cup directly in the bag (this will pack too much flour in the cup). Then use the back of a knife and level the excess flour off of the cup. You could use self rising flour instead- just do not add the baking powder and salt to the recipe as it is already included in self-rising flour. You could certainly use a scale but I dont own one as I am sure many of you dont either so this is the best method I have found to get an accurate measuring of flour.baking powder I like to use the aluminum free baking powder as I am one of those people who can taste the aluminum in the regular baking powder. If you dont typically taste it, you can use regular baking powder. saltgranulated sugar I think you could use a sugar substitute here. I believe Stevia or Truvia make a 1:1 sugar substitute.poppy seedslemon zest its really important you get a fresh lemon for this. There just isnt a good substitute for fresh lemon juice and it is the star of the show here. buttermilk I find that room temperature is best as it blends everything together easier. Heavy cream can be used instead of buttermilk (especiallyy if you want a sweeter taste) in this recipe and will still produce soft, rich biscuits. You could use milk but I would make sure it is a fuller fat milk, like whole milk. I havent tested this recipe using non-dairy milk.salted butter melted. Sure, I suppose you can use unsalted butter if needed. vanilla extractpowdered sugarfresh lemon juice I am a huge advocate of always using fresh lemon juice instead of the bottled stuff. I think the bottled stuff just tastes a lot like straight up acid and not like almond extract I made this a couple of different ways, with vanilla and almond extract. All my taste testers (they are picky women yall ha) preferred the almond extract but if you dont have it or its not your thing, just use vanilla. How To Make Lemon Poppyseed Butter Swim BiscuitsPreheat the oven to 450F degrees. Add the sugar and lemon zest to a medium bowl. Use a spoon mix the two together until slightly moist and fragrant. Add the flour, baking powder, salt and poppy seeds to the lemony-sugar and whisk until combined. In a separate, medium bowl, combine the buttermilk, 2 Tablespoons of melted butter and vanilla.Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until combined. The batter will be wet and sticky. Do not overmix.Place the stick of salted butter into the bottom of an 88 or 99-inch baking pan.Microwave the butter until it melts. (I use the melt setting on my microwave so that the butter doesnt explode. If you dont have this setting, I recommend using your oven to melt the butter in the pan instead.) Pour the batter into the pan with the melted butter. Gently spread the batter to the edges of the pan.Use a knife to loosely score the biscuits into 9 squares. This will make it much easier to cut the biscuits after theyre done baking. Bake on the middle oven rack for 25-30 minutes, or until the top and sides are golden brown. If you find your biscuits are browning too quickly, place a sheet of foil over the top for the remaining baking time. Add the powdered sugar, lemon juice, almond extract, salt and poppy seeds to a bowl and stir until smooth.Spoon and spread over the biscuits.Craving More Recipes?Strawberries and Cream Butter Swim BiscuitsBlueberry Butter Swim BiscuitsApple Pie Butter Swim BiscuitsCinnamon Sugar Butter Swim BiscuitsCinnamon Roll Butter Swim Biscuits PrintLemon Poppyseed Butter Swim BiscuitsTender, fluffy homemade biscuits with tons of lemon flavor, lots of poppy seeds and a bunch of homemade lemon glaze.Course Breads, Breakfast, Brunch, Dessert, SnackCuisine AmericanPrep Time 10 minutes minutesCook Time 30 minutes minutesTotal Time 40 minutes minutesServings 9Calories 342kcalAuthor Brandie SkibinskiIngredientsBiscuits:2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled1 Tablespoon + 1 teaspoon baking powder teaspoon salt cup granulated sugarzest from 1 lemon (about 1 Tablespoon)1 Tablespoon poppy seeds2 cups buttermilk (or heavy cream, see notes below) cup (1 stick) + 2 Tablespoons salted butter, melted (divided use)1 teaspoon vanilla extractLemon Poppy Seed Glaze:1 cup powdered sugar2 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice teaspoon almond extract (can use vanilla extract)pinch of salt2 teaspoons poppy seedsInstructionsPreheat the oven to 450F degrees.Add the 1/3 cup granulated sugar and zest from 1 lemon to a medium bowl.
