The Mechanics of Alien Waves
One of the most dramatic and memorable scenes from Interstellar comes from Millers planet - and if you dont want a spoiler for an 11 year old movie, feel free to skip to the next paragraph. When the crew arrives on this potential new home for humanity, they are faced with a literal 1.2 km high wall of water bearing down on them quickly. Its a great representation of how waves on other planets can act differently than on Earth. Admittedly, according to Kip Thorne, the scientific advisor for that movie, those waves are actually caused by the planets proximity to a local black hole rather than the wind that forms our waves here.
