Crock Pot Cajun Boiled Peanuts
Crock Pot Cajun Boiled Peanuts are a Southern favorite made with raw peanuts, Cajun seasoning and spices then slow cooked until tender!A Flavorful Southern SnackThese boiled peanuts are a gas station favorite around where I live. You will find a big pot of them at most gas stations. That might sound crazy if this isnt something you are familiar with, but I promise, they really are a favorite to many folks. And if youve never had them, then I am excited to share this boiled peanuts recipe with you! Frequently Asked Questions:Arent you supposed to use green peanuts? Typically boiled peanuts are made with green peanuts. Green peanuts are not actually green. It just means they are freshly harvested. They have to be kept refrigerated because they are highly perishable and you can only get them during late summer/early fall when they are harvested. These are super hard to find in most of the country so that is why I am not using them here. You can use those though if you have access to them. Those peanuts would only need to be cooked in the Crock Pot for about half the time given here. How do you serve Boiled Peanuts? To serve, place in a bowl and set aside an extra for the shells. Crack the shells; they will be soft and easy to separate. Remove the peanuts and enjoy, discarding the shells into the extra bowl.I know some folks who will eat the shells but that is not recommended at all as it can cause severe digestive issues because the body doesnt break it down easily. Just open the shells, suck some of that salty brine out and then eat the peanuts inside. Are Cajun Boiled Peanuts spicy? Yes, they do have kick to them. If you want to reduce the heat, you can omit the red pepper flakes and choose a milder hot sauce or leave it out entirely. They will still have a touch of heat from the Cajun seasoning, but it wont be as strong.Or, if you want them spicier, you can double the amount of red pepper flakes and hot sauce. Where can I find raw in-shell peanuts in the store? Usually, you can find raw in-shell peanuts at the front of the produce section near onions and the fall squash area; sometimes, they are on end caps.I have a paid affiliate link here where you can buy them online if you prefer. Can I make these without cajun seasoning? Absolutely! If you just want a super basic recipe. You can just use 1 -2 pounds raw peanuts, enough water to cover the peanuts completely and about cup salt (some folks like a lot of salt and will use a cup of salt, so I will leave that up to you). Cover and cook on low 9-11 hours. Can I speed this up by cooking on high? This recipe should not be cooked on high. It really needs that full time low and slow.It is worth the wait. How to store leftover Crock Pot Boiled Peanuts? Leftover Boiled Peanuts should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. You can enjoy them cold straight from the fridge or reheat them gently on the stove with a little of the cooking liquid to warm them through. If the peanuts start to dry out, simply add a splash of water when reheating. In the grocery store, you will usually find it near all the spices and seasonings in the grocery store. Generally youll see it near other seafood spices like Old Bay seasoning. And sometimes they keep it over near where the seafood is in the grocery store. This seasoning does not contain seafood and it doesnt taste like seafood. it is just a blend of spices.Cajun seasoning I like Slap Ya Mama (paid affiliate link) seasoning, but you can use whatever brand you prefer. If you want to change up the flavor a bit, consider switching to a Creole seasoning, like my favorite Tony Chacheres (paid affiliate link).Creole seasoning (generally) isnt as spicy as cajun seasoning so its a good option to still get that flavor without all the cayenne heat. But it depends on the brand. Some of the creole seasonings can be spicy so look at the ingredients.red pepper flakes an optional ingredient to bring some heat but you dont have to use.Tabasco hot sauce Use any brand of hot sauce you prefer.
