How Lorraine Warren Became One Of The Most Notorious Paranormal Investigators In Modern American History
FacebookEd and Lorraine Warren, the paranormal investigators who inspired The Conjuring franchise.Paranormal investigators rarely become household names. While shows like Ghost Adventures and Paranormal State have had some success on television, its still unlikely that the average person on the street would instantly recognize the name Zak Bagans or the name Ryan Buell. The same cant be said for the Warrens. Ed and Lorraine Warren have been immortalized by The Conjuring film franchise, where they are portrayed as heroic demonologists fighting back against the forces of evil. With the Warrens played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, the horror series has propelled the paranormal investigator couple from relatively fringe figures to pop culture stars over the past decade though that hasnt made them any less controversial. The Warrens have long faced allegations that they exaggerated details about their paranormal cases, fabricated stories outright, and manipulated people in desperate situations to move their own careers forward. Ed was a self-proclaimed demonologist, often turning to scripture to gather evidence or drive away evil, but he never claimed to have any supernatural abilities.Lorraine, on the other hand, did. She claimed to be clairvoyant and a light trance medium, and her visions supposedly helped with the couples investigations. The films lean heavily into this aspect of her story, emphasizing the danger that Lorraine purportedly faced during their cases. But like anything else with the Warrens, that claim is also controversial.Ed And Lorraine Warrens Lives Before Becoming Paranormal InvestigatorsFacebookLorraine Warren, pictured when she was young.Lorraine Rita Moran was born on Jan. 31, 1927, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She was raised Catholic and attended Lauralton Hall, a private school in Milford. As a teenager, she met her future husband at a movie theater. The couples son-in-law Tony Spera later recounted the meeting for the New England Society for Psychic Research. He said that a then-16-year-old Lorraine went to see a movie with some friends, and Ed, also 16, happened to be working as an usher in the same theater that day.At the time, Lorraine didnt have any interest in boys, but she immediately noticed Ed and thought he was a nice looking young man. After the movie ended, Ed offered to walk Lorraine and her friends home. Since Lorraines house was the last stop, she felt it was inappropriate for Ed to walk her all the way back alone. Ed understood and left her to continue the rest of the way by herself, but Lorraine later reflected that as he crossed the street, she felt that she had just met the man I am going to marry. FacebookYoung Ed and Lorraine Warren, pictured during Eds Navy days.Though their budding romance was briefly interrupted by Ed serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II and a terrifying experience in which he nearly died after his ship was sunk he was given a 30-day survivors leave. During that time, Ed and Lorraine got married. After the war ended, the couple welcomed their only child, a daughter named Judy. They didnt immediately begin working as paranormal investigators, though. Ed had actually been studying at the Perry Art School, a subsidiary of Yale, before deciding that he didnt need the education and was already good enough that he could make enough money off of selling paintings. We were making a fantastic living, selling the paintings for fabulous prices three dollars, four dollars, Ed said in the biography section of their old website. But youve got to remember hot dogs were a dime, hamburgers were a dime, the theater was a quarter, gas was 18 cents a gallon. So, when you made five dollars on a painting, you were doing pretty good. Curiously, it was through painting and selling art that the Warrens began their supernatural investigations in the first place. Ed And Lorraine Warrens Paranormal CasesTCD/Prod.DB/Alamy Stock PhotoEd and Lorraine Warren, pictured with their daughter Judy.Ed Warren was obsessed with visiting haunted houses, especially since he claimed that he grew up in one. He said that, as a child, he would wake up around 2 or 3 a.m. and see what he described as a Ghost Globule peering out at him from his closet, with the face of an old woman inside. So, as an adult, whenever he caught word that a house was haunted, he wanted to check it out. At that time, the Warrens were complete unknowns, which naturally made it difficult to approach people and ask to investigate their homes. Then, Ed came up with a creative way in: I would do a really nice sketch of the house with ghosts coming out of it, and Id give it to Lorraine, shed go knock on the door and with her Irish personality shed say, Oh, my husband loves to sketch and paint haunted houses, and he made this for you. I made it special for them. It worked, and suddenly, the Warrens found themselves chatting with homeowners who believed that their homes were haunted by spirits. TCD/Prod.DB/Alamy Stock PhotoThe Warrens, pictured during one of their investigations.Though Lorraine initially expressed some skepticism about what Ed believed to be paranormal, she would later claim to have clairvoyant powers that allowed her to see beyond the physical world and glimpse the future. While not everyone believed she had supernatural abilities, they certainly made for compelling storytelling, as they later played a key role in The Conjuring films.Curiously, Lorraine also claimed that she was aware of her clairvoyant powers when she was a child, but she kept them to herself out of fear that people would think she was crazy. In any case, Ed seemed to understand.Eventually, the Warrens founded the New England Society for Psychic Research, or NESPR, in 1952 and later pivoted into full-time ghost hunting. This led them to some of their most famous cases, including the Amityville Horror, the Perron family haunting, and the highly publicized case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claimed that the Devil made him commit murder. The Warrens would later say that they investigated an estimated 10,000 paranormal cases throughout their entire career.Controversies And Accusations Of HoaxingPictureLux/The Hollywood Archive/Alamy Stock PhotoLorraine Warren with the actress Vera Farmiga, who portrayed her in The Conjuring films. The Warrens kept detailed notes of most of their cases, later turning some of them into books that proved to be popular with the public. Critics, however, often accused the Warrens of fabricating parts of their stories, and even taking advantage of people who may have been suffering from mental illness. In the case of the Smurl family haunting, for instance, the family declined to undergo free psychiatric examination after claiming their house was haunted a claim backed up by Ed and Lorraine Warren. In regard to the Amityville Horror case, many of the Warrens claims about the haunted house were later disproven or strongly doubted by investigators, historians, and other experts.Meanwhile, some of the Warrens best known cases, like the Enfield haunting, portrayed in The Conjuring 2, actually saw little involvement from the Warrens in real life.Furthermore, Ray Garton, a co-writer of one of the Warrens books, claimed that the couple were fully aware that a case they were writing about was likely a hoax and allegedly encouraged Garton to make things up in the book. Then, there were the abuse allegations against Ed Warren that surfaced in 2017. It was revealed that a woman named Judith Penney had accused Ed of entering a sexual relationship with her when she was just 15. Penney claimed that the seemingly devoutly religious Lorraine was aware of the extramarital relationship, which allegedly lasted for decades. In addition, Penney said that Ed was physically abusive toward Lorraine and that Lorraine pressured Penney to get an abortion when she became pregnant with Eds child. FacebookLorraine Warren, pictured with the allegedly haunted Annabelle doll at the Warren Museum.Ed Warren died in 2006, years before the allegations were made public, and so he was never able to address them. But even before The Hollywood Reporter story about the alleged abuse broke in 2017, some behind The Conjuring were already in a panic about Ed Warrens true nature. In September 2013, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund emailed top Warners and New Line executives, informing them that the film they released was very far from the true story of the Warrens, explicitly writing that Ed was a pedophile, a sexual predator and an [sic] physically abusive husband. Lorraine enabled Ed to do this, she knowingly allowed this illegal (read criminal) relationship to continue for 40 years. They lied to the public. Lorraine Warren was still alive when the news spread, but her lawyer at the time stated that she was in declining health and unable to comment. By the time of her death at the age of 92 in 2019, she had still never spoken publicly about the allegations. Because of this, both she and her husband leave behind a questionable and controversial legacy. Some have even suggested that the Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring films share little in common, other than their names, with their real-life counterparts. After reading about Lorraine Warren, learn about George Lutz, the man whose claims about paranormal activity inspired The Amityville Horror. Then, go inside the true story of The Haunting In Connecticut. The post How Lorraine Warren Became One Of The Most Notorious Paranormal Investigators In Modern American History appeared first on All That's Interesting.

A Metal Detectorist In Norway Just Uncovered An 800-Year-Old Jesus Statue Made Of Gilded Bronze
Arkeologi i Mre og Romsdal/FacebookThe figure is estimated to be around 800 years old. While scouring an area near ndalsnes, Norway, two metal detectorists were about to pack up for the night when their device suddenly gave a beep. The two men started digging and came across a small, gilded statue of Jesus Christ just an inch or so beneath the soil. The find was not only lucky for the metal detectorists: Had they not found the statue, its very likely it would have been destroyed by farm equipment. The Gilded Jesus Statue Found By Metal Detectorists In NorwayAccording to reporting by Norwegian media, metal detectorists Kim Erik Fylling Dybvik and Warren Schmidt had almost given up for the day when they found the gilded Jesus statue. The two men were walking back toward their car when Dybviks metal detector suddenly began to beep. As the Sun set, they dug into the earth and found the small, gilded bronze Jesus statue. Arkeologi i Mre og Romsdal/FacebookMetal detectorist Kim Erik Fylling Dybvik with the small Jesus statue that he found near ndalsnes, Norway.I immediately understood what it was. It was almost like a revelation, Dybvik stated. He added: It was All Saints Day, the Sun was setting and then I find a Jesus figure. Its almost poetic.Dybvik immediately notified the county municipalitys field archaeologist, Aaron Johnston. Though Johnston was in the middle of dinner, he sped to the scene and arrived about 15 minutes later, faster than an ambulance would have been if I had called 911, Dybvik joked. Indeed, Johnston quickly determined that Dybvik had stumbled across an incredible find. The statue is small but incredibly detailed, showing the suffering Christ on the cross wearing only a loincloth. Kim has made many good discoveries, Johnston remarked, but this was truly unique. The Provenance Of The Jesus Statue Found In ndalsnesThe gilded Jesus statue has been sent to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim for further study. Experts believe that the statue is roughly 800 years old, from the High Middle Ages. Its made of bronze but covered with a thin layer of gold. According to Johnston, it possibly belonged to a stave church a type of wooden church popular in medieval Norway that once stood near the site. Kim Erik Fylling Dybvik/NTNU TrondheimThe Jesus statue is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. Though it was seemingly preserved in the soil for 800 years, the small Jesus statue could have been destroyed by a plow at any time. Instead, archaeologists are hoping to conduct a further survey with ground-penetrating radar. They suspect that they could determine the outlines of any buildings that once existed in the area and perhaps even come across additional artifacts that are buried nearby.Excitingly, Dybviks Jesus statue is just the latest artifact to be uncovered by Norwegian metal detectorists. In recent years, treasure hunters in Norway have also found Viking relics and incredible hoards of gold.Finds like these are often eligible for financial rewards metal detectorists who come across artifacts from before 1537 and coins from before 1650 are given a payout but Dybviks interest in finding objects with his metal detector has never been driven by possible financial gain. Long fascinated by archaeology, Dybvik told Norwegian media that metal detecting is more than a hobby its a lifestyle. He spends most of his free time searching for objects, driven largely by his desire to preserve Norways history. Its about preserving cultural heritage. We find things that tell us who we are and where we come from, he stated. For him, the satisfaction of finding an object with his metal detector comes from the chance to contribute to cultural heritage in an honest and fair way rather than getting a payment. And the tiny gilded Jesus statue that he found while metal detecting at sundown on All Saints Day stands as an especially significant discovery. It is one of my best finds in all my years of exploration, Dybvik said, maybe the very best. After reading about the gilded Jesus statue found in Norway, go inside the fascinating question of what Jesus looked like. Or, discover the reason behind Jesus crucifixion. The post A Metal Detectorist In Norway Just Uncovered An 800-Year-Old Jesus Statue Made Of Gilded Bronze appeared first on All That's Interesting.

Underwater Archaeologists In Poland Just Found Four Medieval Spears At The Bottom Of Lake Lednica
Marcin TrzciskiThe four newly uncovered spears add to a collection of some 280 weapons that had previously been found in the lake.Archaeologists recently found four spears from the 10th and 11th centuries C.E. in the water surrounding the island of Ostrw Lednicki in Polands Lake Lednica. Each of these rare spears is different from the last and shows a unique style of craftsmanship. The most notable find was a spear adorned with gold, silver, and bronze as well as ornamental wings, an elite weapon that likely belonged to someone of high social status. The spears, all well-preserved, add to the collection of roughly 280 weapons that have been found in the lake since scientists for Nicolaus Copernicus Universitys Centre for Underwater Archaeology began exploring the area. The finds support researchers theory that Ostrw Lednicki was an important site during the medieval era.The Four Medieval Spears Fished Out Of Polands Lake LednicaMateusz PopekOne of the spears was ornately decorated in spiral and triskelion motifs. The smallest of the four spears was found along with a fragment of its ash-wood shaft and had its tip adorned with an antler ring.Completely preserved spears are rare. Two more are known from this lake, measuring over three meters in length, Andrzej Pydyn, professor at the Nicolaus Copernicus University and director of the Center for Underwater Archaeology, said in a statement. This years find confirms information, known primarily from iconography, that both shorter and longer spears were used.Archaeologists also found a spear designed like a willow leaf, a shape not uncommon throughout Europe at the time. The spear is slender and delicate, and is similar to other spears found in the area, signifying there may have been a strong local tradition of this type of spear craftsmanship around Lake Lednica.M. TrziskiMore than 280 centuries-old weapons have been pulled from the waters of Lake Lednica over the years. The third spear was both the longest found and the most technologically complex of the four uncovered. It was forged using a technique called pattern welding, which involved repeatedly joining together both soft and hard steel to create peerlessly strong blades. The fourth blade was particularly ornate in its decoration, and left archaeologists most astonished. It was plated with gold, silver, bronze, and other metals, and the surface was adorned with spiral and triskelion patterns. Its possible that the decorations served an identifying function, allowing the weapons owner to be distinguished during ceremonies or battles, and also demonstrated prestige and high social status, Matusz Popek, from the Nicolaus Copernicus Universitys Center for Underwater Archaeology, explained. The presence of such a high-quality object at Ostrw Lednicki further underscores the special significance of this center, both politically and symbolically. Why Did These 1,000-Year-Old Weapons End Up At The Bottom Of Lake Lednica?Centre of Underwater Archaeology/Nicolaus Copernicus University How the weapons ended up in Lake Lednica is still debated.Radiocarbon dating and analysis determined the spears were from the early Piast period, around the turn of the 11th century C.E. But how exactly these objects, and the hundreds of other weapons found in Lake Lednica, ended up there is still debated. One theory connects the weapons to a particularly tense period during the invasion of the Czech prince Bretislaus during the 1030s. Researchers suggest the castle at Ostrw Lednicki may have been the site of a battle, and that weapons may have fallen into the water during fights on bridges or boats.M. PopekExperts believe that the spears date to the early Piast period, likely between 1016 and 1030 C.E.The other primary theory is that the weapons were placed under the water as part of some sort of ritual, a practice known to have occurred in other parts of Europe. Placing a precious object into the water may have held a symbolic meaning, as water was seen as a gateway between the living and the dead. Its possible that the arsenal gathered at the bottom of the lake is an echo of both turbulent historical events and ancient notions of waters power and sacrifice, Pydyn said. Its difficult to say definitively which of these hypotheses is closer to the truth. The spears will undergo further research and will be scanned with X-rays to determine where the objects originate from. Once these analyses are complete, the spears will be preserved and then put on display in the Museum of the First Piast Dynasty in Lednica. After reading about the four spears found in Polands Lake Lednica, learn about the 1,000-year-old carving of a human face also found at the bottom of the Polish lake. Then, read about the 6,000-year-old axe found in a Polish forest. The post Underwater Archaeologists In Poland Just Found Four Medieval Spears At The Bottom Of Lake Lednica appeared first on All That's Interesting.

Cat Finally Steps Inside to Safety After Weeks of Living Outside, Days Later She Has Five Kittens By Her Side
A cat finally stepped inside to safety after weeks of living outside. Not long after, she had five tiny kittens by her side. BestFriendsFelinesAbout two months ago, Best Friends Felines, a volunteer-run rescue, was contacted by an independent rescuer about a heavily pregnant cat in urgent need of help. The expectant mother had been wandering the streets for several weeks. She had no microchip, and no one came forward to claim her. Thankfully, a foster volunteer was ready to step in, and the rescue team quickly arranged to bring her into care.A transport volunteer drove her to their veterinary clinic, where her pregnancy was confirmed, and she was due very soon. BestFriendsFelines"She settled into foster care quickly, showing her carer how sweet and confident she was," Best Friends Felines shared. "She has the most amazing ice-blue eyes, so her carer called her Freydis."With food finally abundant, Freydis ate to her heart's content, making up for lost time. Her belly grew rounder by the day. BestFriendsFelinesThen one day, tucked safely inside her foster home, Freydis delivered five healthy kittens. This might not have been her first litter, but it would be her last. "Daddy must have been a tabby, as we have four babies in varying shades of tabby."Among the litter were a classic brown tabby, a deep black tabby, a thin-striped gray tabby, and a gray tabby with bold swirls. The fifth kitten was a little lookalike of their mother. BestFriendsFelinesFreydis was a devoted and attentive mother, ensuring each kitten was well-fed, clean, and loved. By three weeks old, the kittens were plump and blissfully content, rolling in their nest and proudly showing off their milk-filled bellies. As their eyes opened and their legs strengthened, their curiosity blossomed. BestFriendsFelinesMama Freydis kept a watchful eye on her five little ones, making sure they didn't wander too far. "Watching them grow more aware and interactive each day is pure joy."They soon became little explorers, wobbling around as they tried to make sense of their surroundings. They toppled over, bumped into each other, rolled onto their backs, and attempted clumsy pounces as they tested their budding kitten skills. BestFriendsFelines"Freydis is clearly doing an amazing job keeping those bellies full, given how much she herself eats every day. She's starting to enjoy a few well-earned breaks up high, safely out of reach from her energetic little ones."At five weeks old, the kittens were a whirlwind of energy, filling the room with playful chaos. "They tear around like tiny tornadoes, exploring their world and discovering all the joys of kitten toys." BestFriendsFelinesFreydis guided them through their milestoneslearning to eat from a dish, mastering the litter box, and navigating their environment with confidence. Anja, the mama's lookalike, is especially inquisitive. When she's not bouncing from one adventure to the next, she's curled up in a warm lap.As Anja grew, her beautiful seal-point markings began to appear. BestFriendsFelinesNow that her kittens are becoming more independent, Freydis is finally taking time for herself. "She is wonderfully chatty and absolutely adores people. She'll happily hold a conversation and never says no to cuddles."Once her kittens are big enough, they'll be spayed and neutered, and Freydis will retire from motherhood and enjoy being the center of attention she always wanted. BestFriendsFelinesThanks to the rescuer and the dedicated team of volunteers, Freydis and her kittens are safe and will never again have to worry about food or shelter.Soon, they will set off on new adventures as they search for forever homes of their own.
