The murder of Cari Farver is one of the most chilling and bizarre true crime cases in modern American history. At the time, he was hoping for a fresh start in life. He had just split up with his long-time girlfriend, Amy Flora, with whom he shared two children. He soon decided to sign up for an online dating site, where he met Liz Golyar.The two began seeing each other, but before things could get too deep, Kroupa reportedly informed Golyar that he wasnt looking for anything serious. Raney thought this was strange, but when Farver missed her half-brothers wedding and her fathers funeral, she knew something was dreadfully wrong.Authorities reportedly tried to get in touch with Farver, but when they received messages from her number asking them to leave her alone, they dropped it. Raney also told them that Farver had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, so investigators assumed she stopped taking her medication and vanished of her own accord. It would be years before they realized how wrong they were.The Shocking Harassment Of Dave Kroupa And Liz GolyarOn August 17, 2013, Liz Golyar called Dave Kroupa in a panic. For months, the two had bonded over the threatening messages they were both receiving from Cari Farver, but now things had seemingly escalated.Golyar said her house had been set ablaze and her beloved pets had perished in the fire. Kroupa soon received a text from Farvers number that read, I am not lying I set that nasty whs house on fire. I hope the wh and her kids die in it.Kroupa also started receiving texts outlining exactly what he was doing or what he was wearing at the moment. Some of these messages would come in while he was in the same room as Golyar and could see that she wasnt using her phone at the time, so he had no reason to suspect she was behind them.Pottawattamie County Sheriffs OfficeShanna Liz Golyar was convicted of murdering Cari Farver and posing as her for three years while sending thousands of emails and text messages.When Kroupa changed his phone number, the messages abated for a while. In February 2015, he moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and he stopped spending as much time with Golyar.It was around this same time that detectives finally began digging deeper into Cari Farvers odd disappearance.Uncovering The Chilling Truth About Cari FarverIn the spring of 2015, detectives Ryan Avis and Jim Doty of the Pottawattamie County Sheriffs Office in Council Bluffs started a full-blown investigation into Farvers whereabouts. They suspected she was dead, but they werent sure when or how shed died.Investigators had searched Cari Farvers abandoned car shortly after her disappearance, but when they checked it again more thoroughly in 2015, they found bloodstains beneath the fabric of the passenger seat.They downloaded the contents of Kroupas and Golyars phones for their investigation, and digital forensics discovered something odd. Golyars device showed evidence that she had photos of Farvers car, 20 to 30 fake email accounts, and an app that allowed her to schedule text messages to be sent at a future time.The detectives zeroed in on Golyar, and when she suspected that they might be onto her, she told them that she thought Kroupas ex-girlfriend Amy Flora had killed Farver and had been the one harassing them all along.Shortly after that very conversation, Golyar called 911 from Big Lake Park in Council Bluffs saying Flora had shot her in the leg. Unbeknownst to her, Flora had a solid alibi. She even burned down her own house, killed her pets, and shot herself in the leg to carry out her lies.In 2017, Liz Golyar was convicted of first-degree murder and second-degree arson. A mother cat was found nursing five hungry kittens despite carrying a wound no one around her knew about yet, and the moment a rescue reached her, they understood exactly what kind of cat they were dealing with. Details arose about a friendly stray mother cat and her tiny kittens, no longer welcome where they had been living. The property owners wanted the family gone and were attempting to use unconventional means to scare them off.Mom never stopped caring for her kittens. She kept nursing them, protecting them, and doing everything she could to keep them safe until rescuers pulled the entire family to safety within the same hour.The sweetness she showed the people who found her, despite everything she had just survived, caught nearly everyone off guard. "Even after everything she'd been through, she greeted us with kindness and trusted us almost immediately."The rescue named the family the Breakfast Bunch, since everyone got a breakfast-themed name. Mom is Muffin, and her five kittens were Waffles, Pancake, Omelet, Biscuit, and Toast. When the rescue's veterinarian examined Muffin the next day, they found something the team had not expected. She had been shot with a BB gun just days before her rescue. Although it didn't faze Muffin, the rescue team knew she needed extra care. Pancake, the smallest and sickest of the litter, did not survive. "She was tiny. She was sick. She was severely emaciated. She never got the chance to be a kitten," the rescue shared with great compassion.Losing her was heartbreaking for the whole team and for her foster family. Her short life was filled with love, warmth, and safety, and she remains part of the Breakfast Bunch. "Rest easy, little Pancake," the rescue wrote. The community responded quickly, with donations coming in from people who had been following her story. When the day finally came, veterinarians expected to find one pellet. They found three!While she was under anesthesia, she was also spayed and vaccinated, giving her a fresh start in a single visit instead of needing another procedure down the road. The face of a young woman crowned with a laurel wreath, buried in elaborate clothing and unusual cork sandals, has appeared nearly 1,700 years after her death.She is one of 16 people from Aquincum, a Roman-era city in present-day Hungary, whose faces have been reconstructed for "Once We Were Like You," a new exhibition at the Aquincum Museum in Budapest. The display pairs skulls excavated in and around the ancient city with scientifically informed approximations of how their owners may have looked in life.Six of the reconstructions are hyperrealistic silicone models, complete with artificial eyes, human hair, eyebrows, eyelashes and, in some cases, beards. The exhibition, which runs through Oct. 31, includes men, women and a child who lived during the region's period of Roman rule."The face is the most important feature for recognizing a person," Emese Gbor, a forensic facial reconstruction specialist who sculpted the silicone faces, told Live Science in an email. The city was home to a diverse population in the first through fourth centuries, and genetic and archaeological analyses of the individuals in the exhibition point to connections with regions including present-day Italy, Scotland and Syria, as well as Sarmatian groups from the Eurasian steppe and Celtic communities that lived in the region before Roman rule.The remains of those who lived here have also been unearthed, and continue to be discovered today during the excavation of cemeteries," according to a statement from the museum. Creating a reconstructed face begins with a high-resolution 3D CT scan of the original skull. Specialists then produce an exact 3D-printed replica, allowing experts like Gbor to work without repeatedly handling or disturbing the ancient remains."The latest scientific advances including 3D scanning, CT imaging, archaeogenetic (ancient DNA) analysis and facial approximation research are incorporated whenever possible," she said."If a hyper-realistic reconstruction is required, I create a mould and cast the face in coloured silicone, finishing it with real human hair, eyebrows, eyelashes and, where appropriate, a beard," she said. For instance, hairstyle, expression and many details of the persons appearance are usually more speculative.The woman with the laurel wreathOf all the people she reconstructed, Gbor said she found it especially difficult to forget the woman known as the Jablonka Road mummy.The woman's skeleton was relatively well preserved, but the soft tissue on her face had decayed, leaving only the skull. A laurel wreath still rested on her head, and, according to Gbor, her burial contained fine clothing, a spindle for weaving, bird-shaped cork sandals and a painted male portrait that had been placed near her feet. "That was very moving."Other individuals selected for the exhibition include those of a young girl who died in childhood and a woman interpreted as a nurse or healer who was buried in a children's cemetery. Some of the other reconstructions include a construction worker, a military officer and a blacksmith. Two women appear to have met particularly violent or punitive ends. They were buried face down with their legs bound together, Gbor said. "As I shape each face, I find myself reflecting on that person's life again and again, and by the end, they no longer feel like anonymous remains, but like real people." Her hope is that this encounter encourages visitors to think beyond the scientific data and imagine the full lives that once surrounded the excavated bones."When you see a face, you don't just see bones in a display," Gbor said. "You see a person someone who was born, who grew up, who worked, who loved, who laughed, who struggled, who fought with challenges, who raised children. Some were sick. Not everyone died of illness. Some died in accidents. Some through violence. And eventually, all of them died. That sense of shared humanity helps spark empathy."
