WWW.UNIVERSETODAY.COMForget Searching for Individual Biosignatures. Instead, Find Their PatternsThe search for life elsewhere focuses on biosignatures. These are chemicals in atmospheres that can only be attributed to life. But despite the prowess of the JWST, finding slam-dunk proof of life on other worlds is a confounding exercise. New research suggests that rather than focus on individual chemicals, we should look for statistical patterns.0 Comments 0 Shares 21 Views -
ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMInside The Old Bishop House, The Gilded Age Mansion Known As One Of Connecticuts Most Haunted HousesYou would think a car dealerships viral video would be, well, about cars. But instead, an employee at the dealership showed the world the spooky view they get every day at work. Their workplace is situated right in front of one of Connecticuts most haunted houses: Old Bishop House.Set to haunted horror music, the text overlay on @checkvachon_officials video reads: POV: youre car shopping across from one of Connecticuts most haunted houses.@checkvachon_official TikTokVachon Buick GMC in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, sits across the street from Old Bishop House. When they turn the camera, the view goes from a suburban car dealership to a looming, decrepit, and quite massive yellow house with peeling paint, a decaying roof, and a boarded-up window. The caption identifies the building as the Old Bishop House in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, which is best known as the filming location for the 1971 horror film Lets Scare Jessica to Death. The Film That Made The House FamousLets Scare Jessica to Death was directed by John Hancock and shot on location across a cluster of towns in southeastern Connecticut, Dread Central reports. The story follows Jessica, played by Zohra Lampert, a woman recovering from a mental health crisis who relocates with her husband from New York City to a Victorian house in rural Connecticut to start a farm, only to find a stranger already squatting inside. She also starts to see and hear things and isnt sure if something is deeply wrong with her or the town around her.The southeastern Connecticut setting was partly chosen because the films producer, Bill Badalato, had personal ties to the area.My wife and I had a weekend house in Chester, Connecticut, Badalato recalled in an interview with Dread Central. We loved the area and shared our feelings with John [Hancock] and the Mosses. After a preliminary scout we all agreed that this was where Jessica should be filmed. The Old Bishop House served as the exterior of the characters new home, with its Victorian architecture and distinctive tower giving the writer an unsettling feeling, especially when set over a gloomy sky.The interiors, however, were filmed elsewhere. Given the period houses, beautiful foliage, and picturesque country lanes, the Old Saybrook area is ideal for filmmaking, especially the horror genre, Badalato said.J&M Explorations YouTubeThe exterior of Old Bishop House was used in the 1971 cult horror film Lets Scare Jessica to Death. The films director, John Hancock, has spoken about wanting to return to the location but not being able to find it.I drove around the area several years ago without finding it. I wish I could see it again, he said. The Real History Behind The Old Bishop HouseAccording to Zip06, the house was built in 1875 at the beginning of the Gilded Age, and sits on 72.5 acres of land. For most of its life, it was known as Fairview Farm. Its original owner, a Hartford native named J.P. Newton, purchased it from the Denison family in 1889, had a dam built to create a private reservoir on the property, and planned to use it as a working farm to supply produce to Hartford while summering there himself. In winter, the frozen reservoir was harvested for ice.During the Great Depression, the property was purchased by Fred and Bertha Piontkowski, Polish immigrants who farmed the land and raised four children there. Its rumored that some of the houses 13 rooms were used to board immigrants from Poland and Germany during World War II.The property passed through the family to their eldest son Carl and eventually to his family who have owned it ever since and, according to Zip06, have long made themselves unavailable to historians and journalists, understandably wary of the attention the house has attracted over the decades. It is unknown exactly when the house was vacated. The property was listed for sale in October 2017 at $5,795,000, a price that, as of 2019, had not changed despite being removed from the market twice.Old Saybrooks building inspector told Zip06 that despite its weathered exterior, the structure itself is sound. If someone had enough passion and the finances, he said, the structure can be brought back to its former glory. The Old Bishop House TodayThe Old Bishop House still stands, as you can see in the video. According to Atlas Obscura, its surrounded by several acres of overgrown vegetation that has swallowed much of the property.Despite being hidden in plain sight, its distinctive tower still looms in a perfect sightline from the car dealership directly across the street. @checkvachon_official Right across the street from us sits the Old Bishop House An abandoned home used in the 1971 horror film Lets Scare Jessica to Death luckily Vachon Buick-GMC is here to help you find your getaway car 225 Middlesex Tpke, Old Saybrook, CT 06475 #haunted #hauntedhouse #connecticut #horror #scary original sound Staecy Z After reading about the Old Bishop House, learn about the true story behind The Haunting in Connecticut and the family that claimed to suffer two years of supernatural torment. ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COM900 Bodies Have Been Trapped Inside The USS Arizona Since It Sank At Pearl Harbor And Scientists Just Found That The Ship Is Still Leaking Oil@animal.world1901/TikTokThe USS Arizona sank in 1941 with 900 men aboard, and the ship is still leaking oil to this day.The USS Arizona is still sitting at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, right where it sank during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Of the 1,177 sailors and Marines who died aboard the ship that day, 900 remain entombed inside its wreckage. And the ship, as a new study confirms, has been leaking oil ever since every single day for 84 years.A TikTok video posted by @belowthesurface28, which recently racked up 1.3 million views, shows the sunken ship, still visible beneath the memorial that was built atop it.Its hard to believe there are 900 men still inside this ship right now, @belowthesurface28 said.Theres long been a claim that families begged the Navy not to move the bodies inside the USS Arizona, but the truth is more complicated, including the fact that many of the bodies simply couldnt be recovered. The explosion was so catastrophic that some men were vaporized, trapped in wreckage, or too badly damaged to be identified. The Navy thus officially designated the hull a final resting place. And it has stayed that way, though some families have since pushed for the opposite, working to identify crew members still buried as unknowns in a Honolulu cemetery.Meanwhile, scientists have also grown concerned about the oil coming from the USS Arizona. How The USS Arizona Sank In Mere Minutes With 900 Bodies InsideWikimedia CommonsThe USS Arizona suffers massive explosions during the Pearl Harbor attack. The attack on Pearl Harbor began just after 8 a.m. on a quiet Sunday morning. Ten Japanese bombers struck the USS Arizona with four bombs dropped from an altitude of 10,000 feet, according to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. The first three did relatively minor damage, causing a few small deck fires, but the fourth plunged five decks down, igniting the ships ammunition and powder stores. The resulting explosion was catastrophic, and the ship sunk in minutes. Half of all the Americans killed at Pearl Harbor that day died on the USS Arizona.Tim Mossholder/UnsplashThe USS Arizona Memorial today. The Navy later determined that the wreck was too damaged to salvage. Rather than raise the ship, it was left where it sank. A white concrete memorial now stands over it. But just below the surface, the ships outline is still visible.Scientists Confirmed That The USS Arizona Is Still Leaking OilNew research published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin and led by scientists at the University of Houston and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) analyzed oil samples collected from multiple leak points on the sunken battleship in 2016 and 2018.Using molecular fingerprinting techniques, the team confirmed that the oil seeping from the wreck is a heavy fuel oil refined from California crude, consistent with U.S. Navy fueling practices in the early 1940s.In other words, its the same oil thats been sitting in the ship since before the attack. The Arizona had just been filled up the day before it was struck. Of the roughly 1.6 million gallons originally aboard, an estimated 600,000 gallons remain today. The ship now leaks somewhere between one and two gallons a day. At that scale, its a steady trickle.Nikki/Adobe StockScientists recently confirmed how well-preserved the oil leaking out of the USS Arizona still is.What surprised the researchers wasnt just that the oil is still there. Its how little it has changed.I would say that surprisingly, the oil has not changed that much in 80 years, said Chris Reddy, WHOI marine chemist and the studys senior author, in an interview with KJZZ.Some microbes have eaten a little of it, but I can tell you, Ive worked on other oil spills where we have seen more degradation in six weeks than the 80 years that we see at the USS Arizona. The reason, Reddy explained, comes down to packaging. The oil is still sealed deep inside the ships tanks, in low-oxygen conditions that give microbes little opportunity to break it down.Despite being underwater for decades, the oil retains high concentrations of potentially toxic compounds. The team also found that its chemical makeup varies depending on the leak location. As it moves through the maze of wreckage, it encounters varying oxygen levels, water flow, and microbial activity, shaping the oils chemistry and giving each leak a unique fingerprint, said Jago Radovi, a research associate professor at the University of Houston and lead author of the study. What A Sunken Battleship Can Teach Us About Other WrecksThere are an estimated 5,000 World War II shipwrecks scattered across the Atlantic and Pacific. Just in the last few years, several such ships have been located everywhere from the South Pacific to the Solomon Islands to Alaska. Most of these ships are carrying some fraction of their original fuel.Scientists dont really know what the oil looks like now, how fast it might escape, or what the environmental consequences could be when it does. Its not an if but a when, Reddy told KJZZ. All these oils start to release.Thats precisely what makes the USS Arizona so valuable as a research site. Scientists know exactly what went into it, when it sank, and where it has been sitting ever since. The data gathered is already being applied to another area called Iron Bottom Sound near Guadalcanal, where roughly 40-50 American and 60 Japanese ships sank. This work offers valuable insights that strengthen preparedness and planning for future operations at other shipwrecks, Reddy said in the statement from WHOI. @beyondtherecord24 900 men still stuck inside the ship. #shipwrecks #sea #boat #ship #story i was only temporary my head is empty All Thats Interesting reached out to @belowthesurface28 for comment via TikTok direct message and comment. ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMThe Head-Scratching Mystery Behind The Green Children Of WoolpitOn an otherwise normal day around 1150, residents of the English village of Woolpit made a startling discovery on the edge of town two small children with green skin. Not only did the children look strange, but they also spoke a strange language and seemed repulsed by most food.Taken in by the villagers, the odd pair eventually lost the green tone in their skin and learned to speak English. They claimed that they came from a distant land called St. Martin where people rarely encountered sunlight.Public DomainThe story of the Green Children of Woolpit is bizarre but possibly plausible. In the years since, the Green Children of Woolpit have become a baffling historical mystery. If they truly existed, what turned their skin green? What was the land of St. Martin? And could the explanation be extraterrestrial? The Green Children Of Woolpit Make Their First AppearanceThe story of the Green Children of Woolpit was recounted by two different chroniclers: the 13th-century historian William of Newburgh and the 12th-century abbot Ralph of Coggeshall. But Newburgh and Coggeshall both tell a similar story of how two green children appeared in the village of Woolpit. As the tale goes, the two children were discovered by villagers around the year 1150. Historic UK reports that they were spotted crawling out of one of the pits meant for catching wolves that gave the village its name. (Woolpit in Old English is wulf-pytt.)Most startling of all, they were green.During harvest, while the reapers were employed in gathering in the produce of the fields, two children, a boy and a girl, completely green in their persons, and clad in garments of a strange color, and unknown materials, emerged from these [wolf pits], Newburgh recounted in his Historia rerum Anglicarum (History of English Affairs) from 1220.Georg Wamuth/Wikimedia CommonsAn example of a wolf pit, this one from Bavaria, Germany. Not only were the children green and clad in strange clothing, but they also seemed to speak gibberish. Coggeshall reports that they were taken to the home of Sir Richard de Calne, who lived nearby. But though de Calne offered the green children food, they refused to eat anything. After a few days of this, the Green Children of Woolpit discovered some green beans growing in de Calnes garden and eagerly gobbled them up. Before long, they reportedly took to eating the food the villagers offered them as well, and began to lose the green tinge of their skin.Though the little boy grew sick and died, the girl seemed to flourish under the villagers care. Before long, she mastered the English language and told the people of Woolpit a strange story about their homeland. The Legend Behind The Land Of St. MartinThe girl, who took on the name Agnes Barre according to Ancient Origins, eventually told the villagers that she and her brother had come from a place called St. Martin. But she wasnt sure how theyd ended up in Woolpit. On a certain day, when we were feeding our fathers flocks in the fields, we heard a great sound, such as we are now accustomed to hear at St. Edmunds, when the bells are chiming, she said, and whilst listening to the sound in admiration, we became on a sudden, as it were, entranced, and found ourselves among you in the fields where you were reaping.Tuli/Wikimedia CommonsRuins of an abbey in Bury St. Edmunds, a small town near Woolpit, whose bells the Green Children of Woolpit recall hearing.Upon further questioning, she said that her country was Christian and had churches but otherwise was quite different from England. The sun does not rise upon our countrymen; our land is little cheered by its beams; we are contented with that twilight, which, among you, precedes the sun-rise, or follows the sunset, she explained, according to Newburgh. Moreover, a certain luminous country is seen, not far distant from ours, and divided from it by a very considerable river. But no one ever found out where exactly the Green Children of Woolpit came from. As Mental Floss reports, the girl Agnes apparently lived a fairly normal life, although some sources state that she became rather loose and wanton in her conduct in her later years. So who were the Green Children of Woolpit? What was the land of St. Martin? And could the explanation be extraterrestrial?Where Did The Green Children Of Woolpit Come From?Though its unclear whether the Green Children of Woolpit ever truly existed, their story has fascinated people for centuries. Today, there are a few possible explanations for the childrens skin, clothing, and language. As Mental Floss explains, they may have been poisoned with arsenic and left to die, which could explain their green-toned skin. Another explanation for their green skin could be chlorosis, which results from malnutrition and may explain why their green skin faded away as they adjusted to a better diet.Rod Bacon/Wikimedia CommonsA sign erected in homage of the Green Children of Woolpit in the village itself. As for their strange language and clothing? Historic UK notes that they may have been children of Flemish immigrants who were killed by King Stephen or King Henry II. Thus, what the villagers in Woolpit took as gibberish might actually have been Dutch. And the twilight described by the children could have been the leafy darkness of nearby Thetford Forest. Then again, others have offered some very different explanations. Some claim that the childrens green skin, strange clothes, and unintelligible language are a sure sign that they came from outer space. This theory appears to have first been put forward in the 17th century, when Robert Burton wrote in The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) that the Green Children of Woolpit fell from Heaven.Though theres little evidence to back this theory up, its certainly true that theres some overlap between the story of the Green Children of Woolpit and modern descriptions of aliens as little green men.Of course, there are also some who say that the Green Children of Woolpit never existed at all.To William of Newburgh, who chronicled their story, this is of no matter. In his account of the children, he wrote: Let every one say as he pleases, and reason on such matters according to his abilities; I feel no regret at having recorded an event so prodigious and miraculous. After reading about the strange story of the Green Children of Woolpit, go inside the equally bizarre story of the Moon-Eyed people from Cherokee lore.
