Little Wanderers NYCWhen volunteers at Little Wanderers NYC learned that a feline family of seven urgently needed rescue, they sprang into action.A tabby mother named Penne and her tiny kittens had been surrendered to a veterinary clinic and needed a safe place to land. As a partner of Little Wanderers NYC, the clinic knew exactly who to call."When I picked Penne up from the vet, she was calm but obviously confused," Marla, a volunteer with Little Wanderers NYC, shared with Love Meow. Penne and her kittensLittle Wanderers NYCEven though Marla already had other fosters in her care, she welcomed Penne and her kittens with open arms. She prepared a quiet, cozy space where Penne could relax and feel safe. "Things were calm and quiet in there. She was exhausted."Because the kittens were too young to regulate their body temperature, Marla gently placed them in an incubator with their mom to keep them warm. Little Wanderers NYC"She settled in pretty quickly, and she sensed she was safe and could finally stretch out and close her eyes."It was clear that Penne wasn't meant for life on the streets. She was trusting and didn't show the food insecurity often seen in rescued cats. At first, she hid in the bathroom, but it seemed more like she was trying to take a break from her kittens than anything else. Little Wanderers NYCCaring for six hungry kittens was no small task. They kept their mom constantly busy, often jostling for position while nursing. To give Penne a break, Marla and her family would step in to "kitten-sit" from time to time.Not far away, there was another mother cat named Grace who had come from a different situation. She had given birth to four kittens, but despite every effort from rescuers and veterinary staff, only two survived. Yet her nurturing spirit never faded. From the beginning, she was willing and eager to care for other kittens, including Penne's."We call her 'heli-cat' because she's a helicopter mom. She's very loving despite all she's gone through." Moo and GraceLittle Wanderers NYCWhen an orphaned kitten named Moo arrived in need of a mother, Grace didn't hesitate. She welcomed Moo as if she had always been part of the family, allowing her to nurse alongside the others. Moo quickly found comfort, warmth, and love not just from one mother but from two.Penne also accepted Moo as her own. Being close in age to her kittens, Moo fit right in with the crew. Little Wanderers NYCNow, Moo moves freely between her two moms, surrounded by constant care and affection. She's thriving with her new siblings, making up for lost time.Penne doesn't mind being swarmed by a pile of kittens, lying still as they nurse. "She's young, sweet, and a little shy, but very attentive to her kittens and lets them nurse until she's exhausted. She will make a wonderful addition to any family."
