ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMMurry Wilson, The Domineering And Violent Father Of Three Of The Beach BoysThe sun-soaked songs of The Beach Boys convey wholesome fun, youthful adventures, and the joys of California living. But they covered up a dark truth. The three brothers who made up part of the Beach Boys, Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, had allegedly been beaten and abused by their father, Murry Wilson, for most of their lives. Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesMurry Wilson helped create The Beach Boys, but was also abusive and domineering.Murry had once aspired to be a musician himself, and he passed on his love of music to his sons. But he was a domineering and violent father, and even purportedly caused Brian to go deaf in one ear after hitting him as a boy. When his sons formed The Beach Boys, Murry served as their first manager, but was so draconian that he was ultimately fired. This is shocking story Murry Wilson, the abusive and domineering father of Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys. The Early Life Of Murry WilsonBorn on July 2, 1917, in Hutchinson, Kansas, Murry Gage Wilson had a childhood defined by poverty and abuse. He moved with his family to Los Angeles when he was just five years old, where they were initially so impoverished that they lived in a tent on the beach with other squatters. Even as he grew up and things grew more stable financially, Murry had to contend with the relentless abuse of his father, Buddy. As Peter Ames Carlin wrote in Catch a Wave: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Beach Boys Brian Wilson (2006), Buddy was a violent alcoholic who often beat his wife and children. Murry, as the second oldest son, often found himself forced to protect his mother and siblings. Within this environment, Murry found solace in music. Carlin writes that Murry taught himself piano and guitar (that said, other biographers have claimed that Murry could not play an instruments) and that he developed an overriding ambition to become a successful songwriter. After graduating from George Washington High School in 1935 during the Great Depression, however, Murry instead went to work. He got a job at the Southern California Gas Company, and began to move up the ranks of the gas industry. Meanwhile, in 1938, Murry got married to Audree Korthof. All the while, his songwriting dreams seemed to fade away. And then, on June 20, 1942, Audree and Murry Wilson had their first son: Brian Douglas Wilson. Two more sons, Dennis and Carl, would follow in 1944 and 1946.The Abusive Father-Manager Of The Beach BoysBrian WilsonMurry Wilson and his family: Audree, Brian, Dennis, and Carl.Murry Wilson passed on his love of music to his sons, Brian, Dennis, and Carl. But he was also a terrifying and domineering presence in their life. In The Nearest Faraway Place: Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys, and the Southern California Experience (1996) Timothy White writes that Murrys obsession with pushing his sons toward music could border on obsession. The degree to which Murry fleshed out his goals through his infant children was in fact peculiar, White recounted. He tried to transform every quaint babble and snatch of gurgling from his baby boys into songs, pounding a Hammond piano beside Brians playpen for hours and giving his son the kind of playful pep talks that betray, at best, a budding stage father.Whats more, Murry could be violent. Many reports claim that Murry caused Brian to lose his hearing in one ear when he hit him as a little boy, and Murry was physically and emotionally abusive toward all his sons. He would berate them, yelling things Im the boss, goddamnit! and beat them with his fists or a leather belt. Some biographers have claimed that Murry once punished Brian by forcing him to defecate on a plate, and that another time he forced Dennis, who hated tomatoes, to eat tomatoes until he threw up. He was awful. Im so glad he wasnt my father. He definitely did some damage, Mike Love, Brian, Dennis, and Carls cousin, and fellow bandmate, recalled in an interview. [He was] very abusive and gruff and terrifying and intimidating and negative Very unsupportive.Public DomainThe Wilson brothers, Brian, Dennis, and Carl, later made up part of The Beach Boys. But, as Love acknowledged, Murry did know the music industry. After Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson formed a band with Love and their friend, Al Jardine (called The Pendletones), Murry introduced them to music publisher Hite Morgan, who helped the band record their first hit: Surfin'The song was a hit, and Murry Wilson helped the band renamed The Beach Boys to get a lucrative deal with Capitol Records. Though he became the bands first manager, things would soon sour. Indeed, Murry was just as domineering as a manager as he had been as a parent and was fired as The Beach Boys manager in 1964. Despite this, he remained stubbornly involved in the band. Recorded audio from studio sessions of Help Me Rhonda, played recently during Disney+ The Beach Boys documentary, captured Murry belittling Brian. Public DomainThe Beach Boys posing with a surfboard.Brian, Im a genius too. Lets go, OK? Murry says. Another another point, he declares: When you guys get so big, you stop singing everything from your hearts, youre going downhill Downhill, son! Ive protected you for 22 years, but I cant go on if youre not going to listen to an intelligent man.But the rift between Murry Wilson and his sons only grew. The Death Of Murry WilsonDepressed and angry over his termination, Murry Wilson went on to manage a Beach Boys lookalike band called the Sunrays. In May 1965, shortly after his disruptive visit during the Help Me Rhonda recording, he also sent Brian a 5,000 word letter full of grievances, writing, No matter how many hit songs you write or how many hundreds of thousands of dollars you may earn, you will find when you finish this short cycle of business success that you didnt do it honestly and for this reason you are going to suffer remorse. He also released his own album, The Many Moods of Murry Wilson, a year after The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds.IMDBMurry Wilsons sons later said he physically and emotionally abused them.In 1972, the dejected patriarch was diagnosed with diverticulitis, which only worsened his pre-existing heart disease. He was hospitalized the following year after a heart attack, and within a few weeks, on June 4, 1973, Murry Wilson died at his home in Whittier, California. The cause of death was an acute myocardial infarction, a heart attack. He was 55 years old. In the end, his sons had mixed feelings about their father. Dennis, who died just a few years later at the age of 39, once remarked that he and his brothers had a shitty childhood and that their father used to whale on us. But for Brian, things with Murry were more complicated. Lots of things have been written about my dad and the way he treated me and my brothers, Brian Wilson wrote in his 2017 biography, I Am Brian Wilson. Lots of them are true. Some of them are dirty lies. But even the things that are true arent always what they seem. After reading about Murry Wilson, the abusive and domineering father-manager of The Beach Boys, discover the harrowing stories of some of the infamous most stage parents, from Joe Jackson to Joan Crawford.
