Hollow Knight: Silksong is real, and we finally know when we can play it in full. That's not a joke; developer Team Cherry has clearly decided that we've waited for long enough, and one of the most anticipated indie games in years is finally upon us. The Metroidvania has been teased and touted for a long, long time, but with a perpetual uncertainty around its arrival. Thankfully, our long international nightmare of rumors and speculation has finally come to an end, courtesy of a Silksong 'special announcement' during Gamescom.

The Hollow Knight Silksong release date has just been dropped directly onto our heads. As the sequel to one of the best Metroidvanias of all time, one which boasts an 'overwhelmingly positive' 97% Steam rating from over 370,000 user reviews, Hollow Knight: Silksong has a lot to live up to. It's understandable that Team Cherry wanted to make sure it was completely happy with its new creation, then, and it seems that time is here. Jamie finally got to play 15 minutes at Gamescom this week, and his Hollow Knight Silksong preview has only furthered my excitement.

I can't deny that I'm just as much part of the hype as everyone else. It took me many years to actually give the original Hollow Knight a proper chance, and I'm so glad I did. It now sits incredibly high on my personal list of the best PC games ever, rising above even the Dark Souls series. With a tremendous atmosphere, incredible boss battles, visual design that really comes to life as you progress, and an unforgettable score from composer Christopher Larkin, it's an experience I still think about regularly, years after finishing it.

Silksong doesn't actually follow the first game's protagonist; instead you play as Hornet, the mysterious protector who plays a key role in the events of the original. Captured and taken to an unfamiliar land, she'll be faced by entirely new challenges as she ascends towards the peak of the kingdom. That means new moves, weapons, traps, and accessories, all wrapped lovingly around those sublime core mechanics. Christopher Larkin returns, too, so we're certain to be treated to another majestic soundtrack.

Hollow Knight Silksong will launch on Steam and GOG on Thursday, September 4. You can buy it on Steam right here if you're ready to set out on a new adventure.
