I can't imagine life without music. Whacking on my eclectic mix of playlists is a more important part of my morning routine than coffee, and I'm 99% powered by the sacred liquid. Imagine waking up one day and finding that two-stepping in a mosh pit is now illegal? Sends a shiver up my spine, that. Well, that's exactly how things are in anime-style rhythm game Unbeatable, and after seven years in development, it finally got a release date at Gamescom Opening Night Live.

Unbeatable is absolutely a bit of me. It's ridiculously stylish, channeling OG Gainax and modern Trigger; FLCL meets Kill la Kill, with a similar narrative vibe to Night in the Woods. It's already been earmarked as one of the best rhythm games of recent times, and I'm not surprised considering it smashed its original Kickstarter target in less than a day.

Unapologetically anti-establishment, Unbeatable is all about playing gigs, battling cops, and blitzing monsters. Between those three very important activities, you find yourself in the shoes of pink-haired protagonist Beat, who's on the run from HARM (that's 'Harmony and Resonance Management') for defacing public property, resisting arrest and… premeditated melodic mayhem?

Of course, her bandmates are also on the hook. But who cares about that when you've got shows to sell out? Unbeatable's rhythmic element is, on the surface, incredibly simple in that you only have two buttons to worry about. However, developer D-Cell Games' clever design ensures there's plenty of challenge to be had. Some monsters require comboing to clear, while cops have an extra visual layer to keep an eye on. The end result on trickier tracks is an all-out Scott Pilgrim-style brawl - it's awesome.

If you're more interested in the music than the story, don't fret. Unbeatable's arcade mode, presented in classic DDR fashion, lets you get straight to the good stuff. Each track has a suite of different difficulties to test your skills with, and there's even a beatmap editor, so go wild.

Unbeatable release date: taking on monsters in a rhythmic arena

Unbeatable launches on November 6, 2025. You can check it out on Steam here. There's also a demo available, so try before you buy if you're not already sold.
