Does it get better than French onion dip and wavy potato chips by the pool? I don't think so. I've been making this back-of-package French onion dip recipe from Lipton for decades, but recently revived it for my summer parties. And I'm so glad I did. This retro dip disappears faster than anything else on the table, and all it takes to make is one inexpensive seasoning packet and sour cream.

How to Make Lipton's French Onion Dip

Originally marketed as "California Dip" in the 1950s, there's not much to making this 2-ingredient appetizer at home. Simply mix a packet of Lipton's Onion Soup Mix with a 16 oz. container of sour cream. I find this dip is best the next day, so let it chill in the fridge overnight before serving.

Tips for Making French Onion Dip

Once you've secured your sour cream and soup mix, keep these helpful tips in mind for making the best French onion dip recipe.

  • The classic recipe is great on its own, but's also a great jumping off point for customizing the dip. Try adding in fresh herbs (chives and green onions are my personal favorite, your favorite hot sauce, or chili crisp.
  • For texture, top the finished dip with toasted almonds or French-fried onions. Crispy shallots or bacon are great here as well.
  • In addition to the classic potato chips, I like to serve this dip with raw veggies, pretzels, and sliced baguette. It also makes a delicious spread on your favorite sandwich.
  • While you can make this dip ahead, we don't recommend freezing it. The texture will change as it thaws.

The Verdict on Lipton's French Onion Dip

This dip has been popular for more than 70 years, and for good reason. It's easy, delicious, and inexpensive to make at home. My mom made it, I make it, and I'm sure someday my daughters will make it to. Next time you're hosting, heading to a party, or lounging by the pool, make this shortcut dip. It's one of those beloved "package recipes" you should stash in your recipe box.
