Rewind to June 2023, and it looked like Battlebit was going to transform multiplayer FPS games. It had huge maps, destruction physics, and 254-player lobbies. It was also cheap, quick to download, and easy to run on even middling machines - if Call of Duty, Battlefield, EFT, and the other shooter titans were bloated and prohibitively pricey, Battlebit was proof that action and accessibility mattered more than gauche production value. At its peak, it achieved a concurrent player record of over 87,000. But then Battlebit tailed off. And then it went quiet. Then silent. Two years after it was released, Battlebit's player count was way down, its recent Steam reviews were mostly negative, and developer SgtOkiDoki was AWOL. But now everything has changed. A big new Battlebit update is happening.

Let's start with a brief résumé of Battlebit as of June 2025. When it was first released, the FPS game hit that impressive concurrent user record of 87,323. In the last 24 hours, Battlebit's simultaneous player count peaked at 1,046. While its aggregated, all-time Steam score based on buyer reviews is 84%, its recent score, based on reviews from the last 30 days exclusively, is 27%.

Given that no official updates have been posted on Battlebit's Steam page for more than 18 months, it also bears the ignominy of the Valve-mandated disclaimer, which appears on the store listings for early-access games whenever a developer hasn't shared fresh information for a year and a half: "The last update made by the developers was over 18 months ago," the disclaimer on Battlebit's page says. "The information and timeline described by the developers here may no longer be up to date."

Until today, the most recent post on the Battlebit Twitter account was from December 2024. On the official Discord, the newest developer update was from November of last year, and the latest full announcement was made 12 months ago. If you were curious about the status of Battlebit and decided on Sunday June 15 to investigate its stats, ratings, and social channels, you would reasonably have come to the conclusion that the game was dead and gone. And yet…

SgtOkiDoki has just released a teaser trailer for what it's calling Operation Overhaul. Accompanied by an enigmatic message that simply says "soon," this seems to suggest that a serious comeback for Battlebit is planned for the near future.

Other than what we can see in the trailer (it looks like Battlebit but bigger? Louder? Better?), there are no details yet on specifically what Operation Overhaul will deliver. Nevertheless, if you haven't played the shooter since 2023, it might be time to dust off your copy.

In the meantime, you might prefer to try some of the best war games, or maybe the best multiplayer games on PC.
