If you want to indulge in a hot chocolate that's extra special, try our take on classic French hot chocolate. Our recipe starts with milk, cream, and sugar that's cooked slowly over medium-low heat. Once it's warmed, stir in bittersweet chocolate until it's thick and velvety. Serve in espresso cups with a splash of vanilla and homemade whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk

  • 3/4 cup whipping cream

  • 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar

  • 10 oz. 60% to 70% bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp. vanilla

  • Whipped Cream (optional)

Directions

  1. In a heavy bottomed medium saucepan, heat milk, cream and sugar over medium-low until just simmering. Remove from heat.

  2. Add chocolate. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir until chocolate is melted and smooth. If necessary, return pan to low heat to gently warm the mixture to melt the chocolate.

  3. Pour into demitasse or espresso cups. Top with whipped cream, if desired.
