Every Christmas, my mother reminds me that she once had a stint as a professional gift-wrapper at Sweezey’s. The regional department store is long, long gone, but my mom still wraps every holiday present to perfection and ties a bow better than anyone I’ve ever seen. I did not inherit these skills, however. My holiday gift-wrapping station is less like Santa’s workshop (like my mom’s), and more so a tornado of Scotch tape, mismatched measurements, and a glass of wine to make the whole thing more tolerable.

I’m hesitant to admit that it’s my competitive nature that got me to reach out to professional organizers for help, but let’s just say my mom’s going to be impressed this year. I begged professional organizers to help me get a handle on my holiday gift-wrapping process. Maybe, I thought, my bows wouldn’t be perfect, but with the right tools, I could at the very least stay organized enough to find what I need when I need it. No more losing the tape or yelling, “Where did the scissors go?”

Thanks to the help of these genius organizing experts, I’m romanticizing gift-wrapping this year, and now, my gift-wrapping storage is as streamlined as possible. And you know what? Now that I’ve wrapped a few gifts, my bows look a little straighter than usual, too. My mom better look out.

Organizer-Approved Holiday Gift-Wrapping Essentials

Finding holiday storage space can be stressful, especially if you don’t have a lot of space to begin with. Laura Ellis, CEO of Organized by Ellis, recommends storing all your gift-wrapping essentials in one place. And if you have no other options, store ‘em under the bed.

“This portable gift wrap station tucks neatly under a bed and keeps every category tidy,” Ellis explains. “The wheels let you roll it to your favorite wrapping spot in the house, so you can load it up with supplies, set up a table, turn on a holiday movie, and wrap away. It holds long wrapping paper rolls up to 40 inches—plus tissue, ribbon, bows, and cards, each in its own dedicated spot. The price is excellent for how much it holds and how easy it makes wrapping season.”

As someone who’s always losing the tape, I’m so thankful for this genius recommendation by Ellis. It comes in a two pack, and each tool clamps onto a table and adjusts to fit the size of your paper roll. You can unroll the paper, unfurl the tape, and easily cut and apply the tape with convenient one-hand dispensing. The paper stays stable and straight, and the tape, right where you can see it.

“Never fish for your tape again,” Ellis says. “This smart little helper keeps the roll anchored so you always know where to reach, and it makes tearing off a piece effortless. It speeds up wrapping sessions, cuts down on frustration, and brings a little order to the holiday madness.”

Every gift-wrapping guru needs a homebase. According to Ellis, you can “wrap like a pro by turning a three-tier cart into a mobile wrapping station.” “Roll it to a quiet corner of the house and stock it with the essentials for beautiful gifts, including scissors, tape, tissue paper, and bows,” Ellis says. “It keeps everything in one place and saves you from roaming the house hunting for that ribbon you swear you had a minute ago.”

“Think slap bracelets for your wrapping paper rolls,” Ellis says. “These clever silicone-covered metal bands snap into place, keep every roll neatly contained, and stop your paper from unfurling, wrinkling, or tearing. They are simple, effective, and surprisingly fun and satisfying to use.”

Audra George is the owner and pro organizer at Pretty Neat: An Organization Solution based in Oklahoma City, OK. George’s hybrid pick is both paper cutter and tape dispenser, and has been purchased more than 10,000 times in the past month as shoppers gear up for holiday wrapping.

“This combo item is great for gift wrapping,” George says. “It is a paper cutter and tape dispenser, and is a great way to have your scissors and tape right at arms reach to wrap gifts quickly and efficiently. It also helps cut straight lines. Yes, please!”

When a scissor, or even a cutting tool won’t do, it’s a good idea to have a box cutter nearby. And not just while you’re wrapping—while you’re unwrapping on Christmas Day, too.

“Open shipping boxes and product packaging with ease using these small-but-mighty box cutters,” Ellis says. “They fit in the palm of your hand and slice through Amazon deliveries in seconds. Keep one in a package center by the door and open boxes right away. Keep another nearby during family gift time to handle tough packaging without the struggle. We use these little guys every day on our organizing jobs.”

If you don’t want to store gift wrap under your bed—or can’t for some reason—George recommends hanging it up in a closet. Using your extra vertical space is always a good idea.

“This is a great storage solution if you have extra hanging space to store your gift wrap,” George says. “It keeps all your supplies in one place and makes it easy to grab what you need.”

Crafit Wrapping Paper Storage Cabinet

If you do have quite a bit of space to work with, like a designated craft room or even an office, this storage cabinet that’s fully dedicated to wrapping paper, bows, and other supplies is a crafter’s dream. It even has wheels, too, so you can move it wherever you want when it’s not in use.

“This is a great organization option to store your gift wrapping supplies—roll this cabinet underneath a desk or into a closet out of the way until you need it,” George says. “It has great storage and accessibility, as well as a surface to work on.”

George also recommends the “slap bracelets” for your wrapping paper—except these come in pretty, seasonal patterns that are just as fun as the wrapping paper itself.

“These little gadgets are great to help keep your wrapping paper rolls intact and rolled up tight in between uses,” George says. “This way the paper does not unroll or tear. They also have little labels on them to help you stay organized. These are a great idea if you keep quite a bit of wrapping paper.”

If you really want to elevate your gift-wrapping game (and I do, I do!), pro organizers say it’s time to ditch the scissors. Cutting tools like this one do a way better job—and they’re easier (and even safer) to use, too.

“Cut your wrapping paper like a pro, and save your hands from cramping,” Ellis says. This cutter tool is even “easy to use if you have a difficult time handling scissors.” It “glides along the roll for smooth, straight cuts, reduces waste, and makes every gift look cleaner and more polished. It comes with replaceable blades to easily swap out when they get dull,” Ellis adds.
