Possibly more than any other genre of game, fighting games are about building and improving upon what came before. Its not just knowing your roots, important as that is, but understanding how different games disparate elements come together into new and interesting wholes. Because the genre has been around for so long and had so many games, not every fighting game that contributed a major ingredient to the proverbial stew gets full credit for it.
