It seems like the plot of a film: A young boy appears to have memories of a past life including his own murder. Consequently, he helps the police solve the crime.The whole story, however, is a bit more complicated. So, whats the true story behind Titu Singhs apparent reincarnation?A Boy With Two LivesRecently, a version of Titus story started to gain traction on TikTok, with user Tom Carty (@tompatrickcarty) recounting a popular version of what many say is the true story of Titu Singh.In Cartys telling, soon after Titu was born, he began telling his family tales of a past life.He would tell his mom and dad loads of stories about how he had a wife and two kids, and they owned a radio cassette shop, Carty explains. His wife, Carty explains. And he starts speaking to his wife and saying, I know your name, and I know our two kids names, and going into mad detail.Not only that, but Titu claimed he had been murdered and he knew who did it. Eventually, the boy identified the killer, who was later prosecuted for the crime.The True Story Of Titu SinghCartys version of events has proven popular, accumulating over 571,000 views. But what really happened here?As many of these claims were documented after the events of the case, its difficult to tell what is true and what is a later embellishment. That said, even with the apparent exaggerations removed, the case has several captivating twists and turns that give even the most ardent skeptics pause.In a 1989 study, researcher Antonia Mills documented as many of the known details about the case as possible. According to Mills, a family reported that their son, Toran Titu Singh, began making strange claims as soon as he could talk, around 18 months old.The family claimed that Titu said he was from the city of Agra, had a wife and children, and owned a shop in Sadar Bazaar. After some time, his story got more specific. He reportedly told his family, I have a shop of transistor radios, and I was a big smuggler and goonda. I am the owner of Suresh Radio.Desi Studios/YouTubeTitu Singh spoke about his story on the The Desi Crime Podcast in 2024.After a little searching, his family was able to locate a shop by that name and they learned that the previous owner, a man named Suresh Verma, had been shot dead in 1983. Once the family brought Titu to the store, they claimed that he was immediately able to recognize Sureshs family as his own and even identified a picture of Suresh as himself. Not only that, but he knew family-specific nicknames, layouts of the home and store, and more. The two families further reported that the boy shared a similar temperament to Suresh.Most astonishingly, Titu reportedly knew that he had been killed via gunshot though, contrary to many online versions of the events, he said that he was unable to identify the attackers. While later reports say his words were used to identify the culprit, theres no solid evidence that this is the case. Still, some people are convinced that Titu was telling the truth.Was Titu Singh Really Reincarnated?There are countless other details that believers point to indicating that Titu Singh was genuinely the reborn Suresh. For example, a 1988 article in India Today reported that there was a birthmark on Titus head in the exact location where Suresh was shot.However, there are also reasons to be doubtful of the claims. While Titus family did not live in Agra and had no known connections to the shop, Titus father traveled to Agra daily and frequently read local newspapers. For example, Mills reports that one newspaper read by Titus father carried the story of Sureshs death for three days in a row, though it did not mention all the details that Titu allegedly knew. Its possible that Titu was exposed to these stories and, consciously or unconsciously, committed them to memory as his own.Theres also the problem of Titus birthday. While Titus father told Mills that the boy was born on Dec. 10, 1983, Mills claims that the only hospital records she was able to find matching the description of his birth would place his birthday on Dec. 11, 1982 several months before Sureshs death. If this were true, Titu would simply be remembering stories he heard and recounting them as though they were personal memories.This could also explain some of the more specific details. While Sureshs family may have believed that they were simply asking Titu questions about Sureshs life, they may have inadvertently revealed details about Sureshs story that provided Titu more fodder to use as evidence of his reincarnation, consciously or otherwise.Finally, as many of these details are being recounted after the fact, its possible that there was significant confirmation bias at play, where innocuous statements were misremembered and refined by erroneous memory to be further evidence of Titus claims.Still, the intrigue surrounding this story alone is enough to keep people guessing about what really happened. Titu himself has not changed the broad strokes of his story, even giving a podcast interview in 2024 in which he doubled down on many details.
