Today, the company serves more than 4,000 retail and trade outlets across 28 of Kenyas 47 counties.Founded in 1996 by Eng. Peter Njeru Njagi, Riva Petroleum short for Rift Valley Petroleum started with only three employees. Njagi left his career in the Ministry of Works Roads Department to pursue entrepreneurship.Today, the company employs about 200 people. It also operates warehouses in Nakuru, Nairobi and Embu.Three Decades of GrowthOver the years, the partnership has achieved several important milestones.In 2012, Riva Petroleum became an official Shell Lubricants Distributor. At the same time, it adopted a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) distribution model to improve efficiency and customer service.Later, in 2016, the company expanded its lubricants distribution network across Kenya. As a result, it strengthened its market presence.In 2025, Riva became the first Vivo Energy Kenya distributor to implement VERA, Vivo Energys digital Order-to-Cash platform. Consequently, the company enhanced operational efficiency while accelerating its digital transformation journey.Partnership Built on TrustSpeaking during the celebrations, Vivo Energy Kenya Managing Director Peter Murungi described the relationship as Shells longest-running distributor partnership in Kenya.The lubricants business is highly competitive and presents its share of challenges. Yet throughout the years, our two organizations have worked side by side, navigating changing market dynamics and industry headwinds with determination and confidence. Together, we have not only weathered those challenges but emerged stronger because of them.According to Murungi, trust has remained the foundation of the partnership.This is the longest-standing distributor partnership Shell has had in Kenya.
