A tabby cat who had been tied up under a porch for days with nothing to eat or drink met the people who came to help her with something no one expected: an open heart. Anna, a Humane Investigator and director at April's Kittens, Forest Park, IL, followed up on the call, not knowing what she would find. No one could have blamed that cat for being frightened, guarded, or finished with people.Instead, Anna found a little tabby who looked up at the first friendly face she had seen in days and decided it was worth trusting. She did not hold her hardship against the humans standing before her. She let them see, right away, exactly who she was.Her name is Blue, and her story is being rewritten. Credit: Aprils KittensWith the help of the Chicago Police Department, the team was able to have the homeowners sign Blue over to April's Kittens. It should have been the hopeful end of the matter. Then came the surprise.When the rescue scanned her, Blue turned out to be microchipped to a completely different set of owners. The team tracked down the registered information and reached out, again and again. The messages went through and were delivered. Not one of them was ever answered. When the waiting was over, the answer was official.Blue was now, fully and finally, part of the April's Kittens family. The openness she had shown that first day was real, but trust built in a moment is different from trust built over time. The Blue who had greeted Anna so openly was still a cat who had learned, somewhere along the way, that hands were not always safe.A new beginning does not erase an old ending. I worked with her every day, just talking to her and showing her I was a safe person."April did not push. She showed up instead. Every single day, sitting with Blue, talking to her, doing the quiet, unglamorous work of proving over and over that this person was safe. There was no rushing it. There was only patience, and a voice that returned each day, and the steady, repeated message that nothing here was going to hurt her.
