I Cant Believe It: A Metal Detectorist In Northern Poland Just Found A 2,700-Year-Old Bronze Sword
Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of MonumentsMetal detectorist Marcin Winiewski found the sword while surveying a wooded area in northern Poland.Marcin Winiewski was on a regular sweep of a forest near Gdask, Poland when his metal detector hit upon something. When he realized what he found, he cried tears of joy.In the sandy soil, a magnificent, well-preserved bronze sword stood upright, as if waiting for someone like Winiewski to find it. After realizing the importance of what hed just found, he covered the site and called the authorities so that they could properly excavate the artifact. The Bronze Age Sword Found Upright In A Polish ForestThe Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, the Gdask Forest District, and the local forestry service soon arrived at the site. In a statement, the Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments commended Winiewski for not moving the artifact, as its exact position is crucial to understanding its history. In this case in particular, the upright position makes this a rather rare find for such an ancient object and it was important to preserve this when analyzing the artifact.Furthermore, although no other artifacts were found beneath the sword, adjusting the swords position could have altered the location of other ancient objects buried nearby as well.Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of MonumentsThis well-preserved blade is approximately two feet in length.Archaeologists dated the sword to between 900 B.C.E. and 700 B.C.E., the final centuries of the Bronze Age, which accounts for the bronze swords excellent metalworking and craftsmanship. The sword is around two feet long, and has remained incredibly well preserved with a protective layer of green patina, the result of the bronze oxidizing over the course of many years. The sword also seems to be tang-hilted, meaning the metal of the sword narrows at the base, and was likely connected to some sort of handle made from wood or bone. But after some 2,700 years, the handle has long since decayed.Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of MonumentsGrooves adorn the bronze blade of this 2,700-year-old sword.Grooves decorate the sword lengthwise, with engraved arcs and lines that intersect the designs. Archaeologists believe that these features are characteristic of how swords were designed during the later centuries of the Bronze Age.How This Discovery Deepens Historians Knowledge Of Life In Ancient PomeraniaResearchers emphasized that this discovery adds to an understanding of life in the northern Polish region of Pomerania during the Bronze Age.According to the Polish authorities, this is not the first discovery made in what is now the Gdask Forest District. In the 1920s, two bronze antenna swords weapons with a pair of curved hilts that resemble insect antennae were found in a bog in Rynarzewo, south of Gdask. These swords were dated back to roughly the same period. The two swords were transferred and kept in the Provincial Museum in Gdask for 20 years, but then were lost during World War II, which makes this recent find all the more important.According to Polands State Forests, the bronze sword would have been very valuable at the time of its production, its value likely equaling that of an entire cattle herd. The upright position of the sword also suggests to archaeologists that it was intentionally placed in its position, rather than tossed aside. This points to the sword being a part of a possible Bronze Age burial ritual or sacrificial offering.Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of MonumentsPolish authorities were called to the site by the metal detectorist and began conservation work right away.Confirmation of both the typology of the sword and its ancient use will occur after the unearthed sword undergoes conservation processes and analyses. The research team plans to use X-ray imaging to examine the swords internal structure underneath the layer of corrosion and patina. The X-ray may reveal any casting flaws or manufacturing techniques used by ancient metalworkers, opening a window into Bronze Age life in Pomerania.Microscopic wear analysis could also allow researchers to determine whether the sword was used for violence or in combat, or was made for ceremony and rituals.Once the conservation work is done, the Pomeranian authorities will decide where the sword will be displayed and exhibited to the public.Winiewski said he was able to hold the sword after it was recovered by the authorities. Although this was not his first significant find, having unearthed early Iron Age jewelry from the same region, Winiewski said holding the 2,700-year-old sword was an unforgettable experience.I was standing in front of an object that I estimate is about 3,000 years old, he told TVP. Someone, for some reason, drove it into the ground, and after all these years I was able to hold it in my hands. After reading about the Bronze Age sword found by a metal detectorist in Poland, learn about the ancient boomerang found in a Polish cave.
