Mama Cat Who Lost All but One of Her Kittens After Rescue Decided She and Her Survivor Were Going to Make It
A mama cat pulled from a community cat colony lost all but one of her kittens after rescue, and the devotion she poured into her surviving daughter carried them both to a place neither of them could have reached alone. Binoculars "Binx"Credit: Tails HighBinoculars, the sweet tabby everyone calls Binx, gave birth to her litter inside a community cat colony shelter, the kind of place a volunteer checks on and quietly keeps watch over. When rescuers from DC TNR Volunteers spotted the little family, they knew this nest of kittens, each named after a bird, would need round-the-clock help to have any chance at all. They brought Binoculars and her 'Bird Babies' to safety, and a first foster opened her home and loved them through their earliest, most fragile days. From there, the family moved to Mintwood Fosters, the person who would walk the hardest part of the road with them.Kittens this young are heartbreakingly delicate, and these little ones came into the world already up against it. Despite continuous care, veterinary support, and hands that barely set them down, the litter began to slip away one by one. Magpie, Heron, Grackle, Sparrow, and Titmouse were each lost far too soon. Credit: Tails HighThrough it all, one tiny girl held on. Her name is Chickadee, the only daughter in the litter, and from the very beginning, she fought harder than anyone had expected. "This spring, we fought alongside Chickadee and her brothers through one heartbreaking loss after another," Tails High shared with LoveMeow. "Despite exhausting every effort possible, we devastatingly said goodbye to her sweet brothers far too soon. Their loss will always leave an ache in our hearts."Chickadee became the reason everyone kept going. She was fighting a viral infection with an ulcer in her mouth and an illness settled deep in her small lungs. The wins were measured in the smallest things. A fever breaking. A few bites of real food. Learning to drink water on her own. ChickadeeCredit: Tails HighThen the tide turned. Her fever stayed gone. She grew brighter and busier by the day. The rescue refused to cut corners on her care. When her x-rays showed slow improvement and a specialist flagged a concern about her heart, they postponed her spay and sent her to a cardiologist. After everything that had already been poured into saving her brothers, there was never any question of stopping short for Chickadee."Chickadee became our reminder that hope is worth holding onto," Tails High shared. "Watching her grow and thrive felt like the sun breaking through the clouds. Sometimes it feels as though she carries a little piece of her brothers with her, living boldly and joyfully on behalf of them all." Credit: Tails HighShe does exactly that. These days, Chickadee moves through the world with the energy of a kitten who has absolutely no idea how hard everyone worked to get her here. Every object in the house is her personal toy. Every corner is worth investigating. She is, as her fosters describe her, a wild child in the very best sense of the word.Deservedly so, she settled into her new home alongside a feline big sister named Cheddar, a ready-made playmate for a kitten with this much energy. Too often, mama cats get overlooked once their kittens grow up, and the team at Hightails felt that deeply."We hate seeing mama cats overlooked when their babies grow up and find homes," Hightails shared with LoveMeow. "Binoculars has done her part. Now she deserves a family all her own." Credit: Tails HighBinx is chatty, affectionate, and completely unbothered by life's finer details. She is happiest curled up next to her person on the couch or stretched across a crinkly piece of paper, because she has never needed much beyond good company to feel completely content. She is, as her fosters put it, the ultimate bestie. It turns out the right family had been paying attention all along. Binx has since found her forever home, where she is finally getting the chance to be someone's whole world, no longer a mama first and a cat second, just a beloved companion with nowhere else to be. Credit: Tails High"We will never forget those boys," Tails High shared. "And neither will their amazing mama, Binoculars."Both girls have since found their forever homes, with Binx finally getting the chance to be someone's whole world. They were given every chance. And in the end, every chance was exactly enough. Credit: Tails HighShare this story with your friends. View more on Binoculars, Chickadee, and Tails High on Instagram and Facebook.
