Advertisement Youth in Mathare Showcase Talent Through Grassroots Football InitiativeYoung footballers in Mathare are finding new hope and opportunity through a grassroots football programme focused on mentorship, resilience, and talent development.Safaricom Hook (S-Hook) partnered with Kambi Safi Community Initiative to support four local football teams with sports equipment in a move aimed at empowering young people through sports and community engagement.The initiative supports the True Colours Football Team programme, which mentors and trains more than 200 boys and girls aged between 8 and 18 years in Mathare.Beyond football training, the programme also offers psychological support to children who have experienced trauma. It also promotes discipline, teamwork, confidence, and resilience.During the handover event held at Mcedo Beijing Grounds in Mathare, four teams namely Young Cranes, Beijing Raiders, Flames FC, and True Colours FC received football kits, balls, tactical boards, and goalkeeper gloves courtesy of S-Hook.Speaking during the event, Kambi Safi Chairman Peter Njogu said sports continue to play a critical role in transforming the lives of young people within informal settlements.When young people are given safe spaces, mentorship, and opportunities to showcase their talents, they begin to believe in their potential. Initiatives such as this inspire hope, build confidence, and help steer many young people away from negative influences while opening doors for their future, he said.Football Creating Hope and Opportunity in MathareThe initiative aligns with the vision behind the upcoming Safaricom Chapa Dimba tournament, which seeks to identify and nurture football talent across the country.Through programmes such as S-Hook and Chapa Dimba, Safaricom aims to engage Gen Z audiences in informal settlements. The programmes also demonstrate how sports can create pathways to education, professional careers, and personal growth.The event also featured exciting seven-a-side football matches where the young players showcased their skills and determination.In the girls match, Beijing Raiders staged an impressive comeback to defeat Flames FC 3-1. A crucial penalty helped level the game before the team secured victory.Meanwhile, the boys fixture dubbed the Mathare Youth Derby saw Young Cranes defeat True Colours FC 2-0 in a highly competitive encounter.Both winning teams received trophies in recognition of their performance.Additionally, the event created awareness around registration for the upcoming Safaricom Chapa Dimba tournament.
