Advertisement Africa Launches AIM2030 to Strengthen Health SovereigntyAfrican leaders and global development partners gathered in Nairobi on May 12, 2026, to launch the Africa Initiative for Medical Access and Manufacturing (AIM2030).The initiative marks a major step toward strengthening Africas health security and reducing dependence on imported medicines and vaccines. The launch featured a keynote address by William Ruto and brought together leaders from the World Bank Group, African Union Commission, and World Health Organization.Reducing Africas Dependence on ImportsCurrently, Africa imports between 70 and 100 percent of finished pharmaceutical products and 99 percent of vaccines. In addition, local manufacturers produce less than one percent of vaccines used across the continent. As a result, many African countries remain vulnerable to global supply disruptions, export restrictions, and rising healthcare costs.Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation, said the COVID-19 pandemic exposed major weaknesses in global medical supply chains.Resilience cannot be imported in the middle of a crisis. It must be built in advance, he said.Consequently, AIM2030 seeks to help Africa build stronger and more self-sufficient healthcare systems.Doubling Africas Manufacturing CapacityThe initiative aims to support local manufacturing and improve access to affordable healthcare for an additional 1.5 billion people by 2030.Specifically, AIM2030 plans to:Double pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity across AfricaBuild sustainable medical supply chainsCreate thousands of skilled jobs in the health sectorFurthermore, the programme seeks to shorten the distance between production facilities and patients, making healthcare products more accessible and affordable.Three Key Areas of FocusAIM2030 is built around three major pillars designed to address long-standing barriers in Africas healthcare systems.First, the initiative will invest in infrastructure, human capital, and digital systems to improve manufacturing efficiency.Second, it will strengthen regulatory systems and support policy reforms that improve market access and affordability. Finally, the programme will mobilize private sector investment through blended financing and technology transfer partnerships.Together, these measures aim to accelerate local production while improving healthcare resilience across the continent.Africa Launches AIM2030 to Strengthen Health SovereigntyStrategic Regional Manufacturing HubsThe initiative will focus on expanding manufacturing capacity in nine strategic countries:EgyptEthiopiaGhanaKenyaMoroccoNigeriaRwandaSenegalSouth AfricaBy concentrating investments in these regional hubs, AIM2030 hopes to strengthen regional trade and improve pooled procurement systems. The initiative is spearheaded by the World Bank Group and the African Union Commission in collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the Africa Medicines Agency.Building Long-Term Health ResilienceThe partnership also aligns reforms through country-level agreements and National Health Compacts under the Health Works initiative. As a result, governments, development finance institutions, and private investors will coordinate efforts more effectively.During the event, Aden Duale and Ouma Oluga emphasized the importance of resilient supply chains in strengthening primary healthcare systems.Ultimately, leaders said Africas push to manufacture medicines locally will not only improve health security but also drive industrial growth, job creation, and long-term economic resilience. The post Africa Launches AIM2030 to Strengthen Health Sovereignty appeared first on Africa Business News.
