Although most of us do manage to keep providing for our feline family members without having to resort to extremes, there are plenty of people who are finding it hard enough to feed themselves, let alone their pets. The result of this has been an increase in the number of cats being surrendered to animal shelters or simply abandoned, when their human carers can no longer afford to look after them. Just the other week, when the Chatty Cattys were talking to Paisley Shook from Coastal Cats & Critters about the various ways they were helping to support the local community, the topic of pet pantries came up, and we found ourselves wondering how widespread this initiative is. As you may have guessed, pet pantries, also known as pet food banks, provide free or low-cost pet food for people experiencing financial difficulty. Although these invaluable resources have been around for many years, the increasing cost of living means that they will be needed now more than ever.Food banks for humans are relatively common, but pet food banks have been increasing in number over the years, often organized by charities, animal shelters, or pet food companies, while others are the result of individuals or communities coming together to help those in need. Often, these food banks are also a place to find further information and resources about pet health and support, or even just some friendly advice. Whilst pet food banks tend to be attended by volunteers, pet pantries are often unmanned sheds, boxes, or shelters where food can be donated and retrieved, and these are proving to be a huge help for people who would otherwise do without or end up surrendering their pet rather than ask for charity.According to Paisley, in Alabama, they see a large number of cats abandoned near the shelter rather than actually being surrendered, likely by those who are too embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help. While these cats will always be cared for, she would much rather assist those who need it so that their cats can keep living at home.Our number one goal is making it so people can keep their pets, said Paisley.
