Sonys first generation of consoles wasnt known as the PS1 back in the day. It was just simply called the Sony PlayStation, because back then we didnt know that wed have several iterations and upgrades beyond that. While it wasnt the first console to use CDs instead of cartridges, in my mind, its responsible for popularizing them as the new standard.
