Just about every genre of video game is built upon the backs of its predecessors, of course, but arguably, no genre more so than fighting games. Making a great fighting game is exceptionally difficult, requiring a very careful mix of mathematical balance, engaging mechanics, and attractive spectacle. Its not the kind of game that can just happen in a vacuum, which is why nearly every fighting game has built upon the proverbial research notes of the big names that came before it.
