Music has almost always been an inexorable part of the gaming experience, but it wasnt until around the fifth console generation that music became a gameplay mechanic in itself. While some earlier-era games gave you tools to make simple music out of canned sounds like Mario Paint, games like Parappa the Rapper encouraged you to actually play along with the backing track in order to succeed.
