After Doom Eternal took the franchises iconic gameplay in a drastically different direction, Doom: The Dark Ages has taken a step back and to the left, reigning in some of the excesses of its predecessor, while introducing new gameplay elements that favor a more responsive approach from the player. Whether this works or not will depend on the player, as the shift may make Doom: The Dark Ages as polarizing as Doom Eternal.
