When the original DOOM launched in 1993, it was a true bolt from the blue. It wasnt the first FPS ever made, an honor belonging to Wolfenstein 3D, but it was the game that really showed just how viable the burgeoning genre could be. Not long after DOOM came out, new FPSes came out of the proverbial woodwork trying to ape its success, with the phrase DOOM clone getting tossed around a lot by the gaming community of the time.
