AFRICABUSINESSNEWS.CO.KEHow Pochi la Biashara Grew to 2.2 Million UsersAdvertisement How Pochi la Biashara Grew to 2.2 Million UsersSafaricoms Pochi la Biashara has emerged as one of the fastest-growing products within the M-PESA ecosystem, with its user base reaching 2.2 million and surpassing the 1 million merchants currently using Lipa na M-PESA.The milestone was highlighted in Safaricoms latest financial results, underscoring the growing popularity of the wallet designed to help users separate business funds from personal finances.A new report by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) sheds light on how the product achieved this rapid growth. Pochi la Biashara expanded from 600,000 users in 2024 to 1.1 million in 2025 before doubling again to 2.2 million.Understanding Women EntrepreneursThe study surveyed 1,992 women microentrepreneurs using digital financial services across Nairobi, Muranga and Kajiado.Researchers found that while many women were already using Pochi la Biashara, they were not taking advantage of several key features that could improve their businesses. Two features stood out as particularly valuable. Payments received through Pochi cannot be reversed by the sender, and customers making payments cannot see the recipients phone number. These features help reduce fraud and unwanted contact. However, awareness did not always translate into usage.Closing the Knowledge GapThe report found that many users knew about certain features but rarely used them.Although 48 per cent of new users were aware of the mini-statement feature, only 8 per cent had ever used it. Similarly, while 71 per cent knew about the Lipa na Pochi feature, only 53 per cent actively used it. Awareness of the airtime buying and selling feature stood at 34 per cent, yet just 7 per cent had tried it.To address this gap, Safaricom launched targeted text message campaigns explaining specific Pochi features while offering incentives to encourage usage. For example, customers who reached a set usage threshold on Lipa na Pochi received a five per cent cashback reward. How Pochi la Biashara Grew to 2.2 Million UsersBeyond Product LaunchThe study showed that launching a product alone was not enough to sustain customer engagement.According to the report, Safaricoms market spot checks revealed that some users became inactive shortly after signing up because they received little follow-up support or reminders on how to use the service and its benefits.Instead of focusing only on acquiring new customers, Safaricom shifted its strategy towards helping existing users better understand the platform and encouraging them to explore more of its features.Learning by DoingThe report also found that customers were more likely to adopt new features when they received practical demonstrations.Field agents showed traders how to make payments and withdrawals directly through Pochi la Biashara, helping clear misconceptions while building confidence among women entrepreneurs. In addition, Safaricoms call centre contacted users to understand the barriers preventing them from using certain features. Customer service teams then guided them on how to use those services more effectively.Trade representatives also provided hands-on support by walking customers through each feature on their phones. This practical onboarding process helped improve understanding while strengthening trust in the platform. The Power of Continuous EngagementThe GSMA report concluded that customers continue using digital financial products when providers maintain regular engagement through education and reminders. The study also found that women were more likely to adopt products recommended by people they trusted.Nearly 49 per cent of new Pochi users first heard about the service from friends or family, while 21 per cent signed up after receiving a recommendation from someone they knew.Meeting Customers Where They AreThe research also highlighted the importance of designing products around customer preferences.Although 70 per cent of the women surveyed owned smartphones, most preferred accessing Pochi la Biashara through USSD rather than the My OneApp or the M-PESA app because it was simpler, more reliable and did not require mobile data.Users nevertheless reported that the USSD journey involved too many steps. In response, Safaricom simplified the process by reducing the number of steps required to access the service.Lessons Behind the GrowthThe report demonstrates that product adoption depends on more than availability. Continuous customer education, follow-up engagement, practical demonstrations and peer recommendations all played a key role in driving the growth of Pochi la Biashara. For Safaricom, the findings continue to shape how it onboards customers, improves safety features, delivers targeted communication and encourages greater use of the platforms capabilities. Thus article was first written by Safaricom NewsroomThe post How Pochi la Biashara Grew to 2.2 Million Users appeared first on Africa Business News.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 38 Views -

Published every four years by BirdLife International, the report focuses on migratory bird populations. It will also guide global conservation efforts across the worlds major flyways. The report will launch during the Global Flyways Summit. The event will bring together governments, scientists, conservation organisations, Indigenous Peoples, local communities and development partners. Together, they will explore ways to strengthen international cooperation on bird conservation.A Global Health Check for Migratory BirdsMigratory birds travel thousands of kilometres every year. In doing so, they connect ecosystems, communities and economies across continents. As a result, they remain important indicators of environmental health. The report draws on BirdLife Internationals scientific data and global expertise. It assesses population trends, extinction risks and the condition of habitats birds depend on throughout their annual journeys. In addition, the report highlights growing threats to migratory species. These include habitat loss, environmental degradation and increasing pressure on migratory shorebirds. Today, shorebirds rank among the worlds most threatened bird groups.Every wetland, forest and feeding ground along a flyway plays a critical role. If one site disappears, migration becomes more difficult. Consequently, bird populations become more vulnerable. For this reason, the report examines the health of Key Biodiversity Areas and other important habitats across major flyways. It also reinforces the need for countries to work together since migratory birds cross many borders each year.Turning Science into ActionBirdLife International and Nature Kenya will co-host the Global Flyways Summit. During the event, delegates will adopt the Nairobi Flyways Declaration. The declaration will draw directly from the reports findings.Furthermore, it will encourage governments, conservation organizations, financial institutions and development partners to commit to practical policy, conservation and financing actions.Together, the report and declaration aim to transform scientific evidence into measurable conservation outcomes.Landmark Bird Report to Launch in Nairobi Ahead of Global Flyways SummitGlobal Leaders Call for CollaborationBirdLife International Chief Executive Officer Martin Harper said the report offers one of the most comprehensive assessments of migratory birds. Just as importantly, it will highlight solutions that are already making a difference.Harper noted that bringing global conservation leaders together in Nairobi creates an opportunity to strengthen international commitments through science-based action.Kenyas Strategic PositionKenya lies along the African-Eurasian Flyway, one of the worlds most important migration routes. The corridor connects Africa, Europe and Asia. Moreover, Kenyas wetlands, lakes and coastline provide essential feeding and resting sites for millions of birds every year.Nature Kenya Executive Director Dr. Paul Matiku said the summit highlights Africas growing leadership in biodiversity conservation. As a country situated along the African-Eurasian Flyway, we see first-hand the importance of international cooperation in conserving migratory species. The Global Flyways Summit provides an opportunity for Africa to help lead a global response informed by science and focused on delivering tangible commitments for birds, biodiversity and people.Meanwhile, senior representatives from the Government of Kenya, international institutions and the global conservation community are expected to attend. AFRICABUSINESSNEWS.CO.KEWhy Kenyas Creatives and Athletes Need More Than Talent to SucceedAdvertisement Why Kenyas Creatives and Athletes Need More Than Talent to SucceedKenyas creative and sports industries are producing some of the countrys most exciting success stories. From musicians filling arenas and golfers competing on the international stage to filmmakers, digital creators and visual artists gaining global recognition, talent is no longer in short supply.Yet one challenge continues to stand in the way of long-term success: turning talent into sustainable economic value. That was the focus of a recent discussion on The Jam with June & Martin on Capital FM, where NCBA Group explored how financial inclusion, mentorship, corporate citizenship and strategic partnerships can help creatives and athletes build lasting careers beyond their moments in the spotlight. The conversation brought together Nelly Wainaina, Group Director of Marketing, Communications and Citizenship at NCBA Group, music producer and Elev8 Founder Motif Di Don, and professional golfer and NCBA Brand Ambassador Njoroge Kibugu. Together, they shared why investing in people is becoming just as important as investing in businesses.Kenyas creative economy is a major growth engineKenyas creative sector contributes an estimated 5% of the countrys Gross Domestic Product (GDP), making it an increasingly important pillar of economic growth. However, many talented creatives still struggle to access the financing, mentorship and business support needed to transform their passion into profitable enterprises. The discussion highlighted the need to create stronger ecosystems where artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers and content creators can access not only funding but also the knowledge and networks required to grow sustainable businesses.Rather than viewing creativity as a hobby, the panel encouraged a shift towards recognizing creative work as a valuable economic asset capable of generating jobs, exports and long-term wealth.Talent deserves the same recognition as traditional assetsOne of the strongest messages from the discussion was the need to rethink how financial institutions and businesses view talent. For decades, access to financing has largely depended on physical assets such as land, buildings or vehicles. However, the panel argued that intellectual property, creative works and professional skills also generate income and deserve greater recognition within financial systems. As Kenyas digital and creative economies continue to expand, developing innovative financing models that recognize these assets could unlock new opportunities for thousands of entrepreneurs, artists and athletes who have traditionally struggled to access capital. Why Kenyas Creatives and Athletes Need More Than Talent to SucceedFinancial literacy remains criticalWhile talent can open doors, financial discipline determines how long success lasts. The discussion emphasized that many young creatives and professional athletes begin earning significant incomes early in their careers but often lack structured financial planning. Without proper budgeting, savings and investment strategies, many struggle to sustain their success after their peak earning years.Equipping young professionals with financial literacy enables them to make informed decisions, manage risk and build wealth that extends well beyond their active careers.Creativity is also a businessFor music producer Motif Di Don, artistic talent alone is not enough to build a successful career. He stressed the importance of understanding the commercial side of the music industry, including contracts, royalties, publishing rights and ownership of creative work.Through initiatives such as NCBA Elevate, emerging artists receive mentorship that goes beyond music production to include business education, helping them navigate the industry with greater confidence while building commercially sustainable careers. This approach reflects a broader shift towards supporting creatives not only as artists but also as entrepreneurs.Opening global opportunities for Kenyan talentThe conversation also explored how stronger institutional partnerships can help Kenyan talent compete internationally.Motif Di Don reflected on his invitation to join the Recording Academy, demonstrating how local talent can increasingly access global platforms when supported by the right networks and opportunities. The panel noted that as Kenyan creatives continue gaining international recognition, partnerships between financial institutions, industry leaders and development programmes will play an important role in helping them expand into global markets.Corporate success and community progress go hand in handNCBA also shared how its corporate citizenship strategy is guided by the Ubuntu philosophy: I am because we are.According to Nelly Wainaina, sustainable business growth cannot happen in isolation from the communities businesses serve. Instead, investing in young people, education, entrepreneurship and talent development strengthens both society and the economy. This philosophy continues to shape NCBAs approach to supporting youth empowerment, skills development and long-term economic inclusion across different sectors.Lessons from professional sportProfessional golfer Njoroge Kibugu offered a personal perspective on what it takes to succeed at the highest level. He described how discipline, consistency and resilience have shaped his career, noting that success requires far more than natural ability. Maintaining humility, continuous learning and staying focused remain essential even after reaching major milestones. His journey also highlighted the responsibility successful athletes have to inspire and mentor younger generations entering professional sport.Mentorship creates lasting impactA recurring message throughout the discussion was the importance of mentorship.Whether in business, music or sport, experienced professionals have an opportunity to help the next generation avoid common mistakes, understand industry structures and identify new opportunities.Mentorship not only accelerates individual careers but also strengthens entire industries by building stronger talent pipelines and fostering knowledge sharing.Building careers that lastThe conversation concluded with a simple but powerful message: talent is only the starting point.Long-term success requires a combination of financial literacy, mentorship, institutional support, continuous learning and access to meaningful opportunities. As Kenyas creative and sports sectors continue to grow, stronger collaboration between financial institutions, private sector partners and industry leaders could help transform individual talent into sustainable careers, thriving businesses and greater economic impact.Ultimately, investing in people may prove to be one of the countrys most valuable investments, creating opportunities that benefit individuals, industries and the broader economy alike. The post Why Kenyas Creatives and Athletes Need More Than Talent to Succeed appeared first on Africa Business News.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 96 Views -
AFRICABUSINESSNEWS.CO.KEKenyas Banks Must Transform Credit Strategies as Digital Lending Drives Market GrowthAdvertisement Kenyas Banks Must Transform Credit Strategies as Digital Lending Drives Market GrowthKenyas credit market is entering a new phase of transformation.Data, analytics and automated decision-making are becoming essential tools for lenders. These technologies can help banks expand access to credit, improve customer experiences and build stronger relationships.A new whitepaper by Visa Consulting and Analytics (VCA) highlights how traditional banks can capture new growth opportunities. The report shows that lenders must modernise their credit models to compete in an increasingly digital market.Titled Winning Kenyas Next Unsecured Credit Wave: Closing the Underwriting Gap Between Digital and Traditional Bank Lending, the report examines changes in Kenyas unsecured lending sector. It highlights how digital lenders are introducing faster, mobile-first credit solutions. These new approaches are changing customer expectations and increasing competition.Kenyas credit market enters a new growth phaseKenyas credit ecosystem now operates across two major tracks.Traditional banks continue to lead in higher-value lending products. These include personal loans, mortgages and business financing.Digital lenders have built a strong position in short-term, low-value lending. They use mobile platforms, automated approvals and alternative data to serve customers quickly. The report estimates that about 18 million Kenyans have access to formal credit. This shows the growing demand for convenient and accessible financial solutions.Kenya now has more than 200 licensed digital credit providers. The sector continues to grow rapidly, with mobile lending expanding by about 3839% annually in both borrowers and credit value.Banks have a major opportunityVisa Consulting and Analytics notes that traditional banks still hold important advantages. They have trusted customer relationships, established financial systems and large amounts of customer data. However, many banks need to improve how they use this information. Better data management can help them make faster and more accurate lending decisions.Kenya has one of Africas most dynamic credit markets, but the way credit is assessed and delivered is changing rapidly, said Sandy Samaan, Vice President and Head of Visa Consulting and Analytics, Sub-Saharan Africa.Consumers now expect fast and seamless access to credit. They want solutions built around real-time data and digital experiences. Financial institutions that invest in modern underwriting will improve customer outcomes and remain competitive.Kenyas Banks Must Transform Credit Strategies as Digital Lending Drives Market GrowthThree ways banks can strengthen lendingThe report highlights three key areas that can help banks improve unsecured lending.1. Unlocking the power of dataBanks collect large amounts of customer information across different services and channels. However, many institutions do not fully use this data when making lending decisions.Digital lenders often analyse transaction patterns and customer behaviour in real time. This allows them to assess risk more effectively.By improving data usage, banks can identify new customers and expand responsible lending.2. Using smarter risk modelsMany banks still depend on traditional credit scores and established lending criteria.Meanwhile, digital lenders are adopting advanced analytics and machine learning models. These tools analyse customer behaviour and alternative data sources. They help lenders assess customers with limited credit histories. For banks, investing in smarter risk models could unlock opportunities among underserved borrowers.3. Improving speed through automationCustomers increasingly expect faster financial services. However, some bank lending processes still involve lengthy manual reviews.Digital lenders use automated decision-making systems to process applications quickly. These systems enable faster approvals while improving efficiency.Banks that adopt similar solutions can enhance customer experience and compete more effectively.A roadmap for future growthVisa Consulting and Analytics recommends that lenders focus on three priorities. These include expanding data sources, investing in advanced analytics and automating credit decisions. The opportunity for banks remains significant, said Samaan.
