The Incredible True Story Of Remember The Titans, One Of The Most Beloved Football Films Ever Made
Alexandria City Public SchoolsThe T.C. Williams High School Titans football team in 1971.The 2000 movie Remember the Titans is considered one of the greatest football films of all time. It follows a high school football team in Alexandria, Virginia, that overcomes racial tensions to win the 1971 state championship. But the real story behind Remember the Titans is far different from how it was depicted onscreen. While the movie is based on true events, much of the plot was either exaggerated or entirely fictionalized. As in the movie, Herman Boone played by Denzel Washington was named the head coach of the T.C. Williams High School football team in 1971. And the team did have an undefeated season. But many of the events in the film never happened. In the movie, the T.C. Williams High School football team is portrayed as newly integrated, but that wasnt actually the case. In fact, schools in Alexandria had been desegregated for several years prior to the 1971 football season. As such, much of the players real-life conflict came from the consolidation of three existing teams rather than racial prejudice. But that wasnt the only thing movie producers embellished. From the state championship game to the car crash that paralyzed Gerry Bertier, read on to learn more about the true story behind Remember the Titans. The True Story Of Remember The TitansRemember the Titans, which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman, and directed by Boaz Yakin, wasnt critically acclaimed when it was first released in 2000. But the feel-good story of a high school football team overcoming racism to become state champions has made the production one of the quintessential modern sports movies. In the film, Denzel Washington plays Herman Boone, a Black football coach who is hired to lead the city of Alexandrias only integrated team at T.C. Williams High School. At one point in the film, Boone even tells his players, Tonight, weve got Hayfield. Like all the other schools in this conference, theyre all white. They dont have to worry about race. We do.In reality, T.C. Williams was far from the only integrated team in the area. In fact, all the football teams in Alexandria were integrated by 1971. The city had begun its institutional desegregation process in 1959, and virtually every school had both Black and white students by the 1970s. Whats more, T.C. Williams High School hadnt been formed by merging an all-white and an all-Black school, as Remember the Titans suggests.Alexandria City Public SchoolsCoach Boone training with Titans players in the 1970s.According to the official website for Alexandria City Public Schools, T.C. Williams was built in 1965, well after the start of integration. In 1971, the year the movie takes place, the city consolidated all high school students into T.C. Williams so that the school became Alexandrias only public senior high school serving 11th and 12th graders.Because of this, three varsity football teams T.C. Williams, George Washington, and Francis C. Hammond were merged. Bob Luckett, who played on Boones team as an offensive lineman, spoke of the real story behind Remember the Titans to Northern Virginia Magazine in 2021. When they brought the three schools together, to me, it wasnt a question of Black or white, Luckett explained. I didnt like that guy because he was my rival.I cant tell you that there werent people on the team that were affected by the race issue, Luckett continued, there certainly were. But if you went to T.C. Williams, you grew up disliking Hammond and GW because of athletics. Today, we still talk about who wouldve had the better team that year. However, the idea of racial conflict was too good for Hollywood to pass up so producers decided to magnify the issue for the big screen. The Issue Of Race In Remember The TitansIts true that race was an important factor in the real story behind Remember the Titans, even if many of the events in the film were exaggerated. President Richard Nixon even wrote a letter to Coach Boone, stating, I would like to commend you not only for the fine job you have done in moulding this superb team, but also for the major contribution you have made in bringing the citizens of Alexandria together. However, the racial tension wasnt always quite as glaring as shown onscreen. One of the main plot points in Remember the Titans stems from a dire warning to Coach Boone. Early in the movie, a school board member informs him that hell be fired if the team loses a single game. Later, during the semi-finals, defensive coordinator Bill Yoast learns that the Virginia High School Hall of Fame has fixed the game to ensure that the Titans lose and Boone is dismissed.Yoast storms onto the field, threatening to expose the scandal if the referees dont stop making unfair calls. But none of this ever happened. In fact, the Hall of Fame wasnt even established until 1990. Buena Vista PicturesCoach Herman Boone (portrayed by Denzel Washington) leads the Titans onto the field in victory.Even Coach Boone remarked that the real story behind Remember the Titans was different than what audiences saw in the movie. We got our share of bad calls, and Im not sure, to this day, that some of it was not racism, Boone noted in the movies DVD commentary, as reported by ESPN. But it was not as overt as appears in the film.Indeed, another scene, in which two Black players are kicked out of a bar because of their race, was also fictionalized. That said, Coach Boone did weather racist attacks during his tenure his home was vandalized during the 1971 season. In the movie, a brick is thrown through his window. But the real events were much more disturbing. As Boone recalled in the DVD commentary, There wasnt a brick thrown through my window I guess Disney, being the family movie production company that it is, felt that to depict a toilet stool coming through your window was a bit much. But swapping a toilet for a brick was the least of the changes producers made to the real story of Remember the Titans.Other Glaring Inaccuracies In The FilmThe climax of Remember The Titans comes during the state championship game, when the Titans secure a victory over George C. Marshall High School in the final play. But in real life, this match took place in the middle of the season. The Titans played their real championship game against Andrew Lewis High School and won 27 to 0. Of course, a shutout game wouldnt have been dramatic enough for Hollywood, so producers swapped the timeline of the true story behind Remember the Titans. They also added to the tension by changing the date of team captain and star defensive lineman Gerry Bertiers car crash.Family Photo/Find a GraveGerry Bertier was paralyzed in a car accident in 1971 and killed in a second collision a decade later. In the movie, Bertier becomes paralyzed after the teams victory at the semi-final game and isnt able to play in the championship. In real life, Bertie was in a car crash but it didnt take place until December 1971, several days after the Titans won the finals. Then, Bertiers accident took place after a celebratory banquet held in honor of the teams undefeated season. The film also leaves out another important detail: the fate of Coach Boone. In 1979, Boone was dismissed from his position as head coach. As reported by the Washington Post at the time, the principal of T.C. Williams High School simply claimed that the program needed a change.WFAA/YouTubeBill Yoast and Herman Boone in a 2000 interview about Remember the Titans. However, Boone had been facing allegations of physically and verbally abusing players. While these claims werent substantiated, several members of his staff including Bill Yoast had reportedly threatened to resign if Boone remained head coach. In the end, screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard maintained that the changes he made to the real story of Remember the Titans were necessary to create a popular film. You just have to maintain the spirit of the piece, Howard told the Washington Post in 2020. You can change a bunch but you cant violate the spirit. After reading about the real story behind Remember the Titans, learn about the true life of Rudy Ruettiger, the Notre Dame football legend behind Rudy. Then, go inside the real events behind 11 historical movies. The post The Incredible True Story Of Remember The Titans, One Of The Most Beloved Football Films Ever Made appeared first on All That's Interesting.

Who Is Nichol Kessinger? The Full Story Of Chris Watts Girlfriend
Nichol Kessinger dated Chris Watts in the summer of 2018, before he murdered his entire family. When Nichol Kessinger and Chris Watts met in June 2018, sparks flew immediately. The two soon began dating, and things between them got serious. But Chris had lied to Kessinger about his marital status from the beginning. And that August, he murdered his pregnant wife Shanann and their two young daughters in order to be with Kessinger.Though Chris had tried to make it look like his wife had taken their daughters and left of her own free will, investigators quickly saw through his charade. Chris was arrested, found guilty of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison. Kessinger cooperated with the authorities, and stated that she was just as shocked as everyone else over Chris actions. So who is Nichol Kessinger? This is everything we know about the former girlfriend of Chris Watts, from how their relationship developed in the summer of 2018, to where she is today.Nichol Kessinger Becomes Chris Watts GirlfriendBefore she met Chris Watts, Nichol Kessinger had lived a fairly normal life. A Colorado native born in 1988, she graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science in 2013. A few years later, in 2018, she was hired as a contract worker at Anadarko Petroleum in Platteville, Colorado. There, she crossed paths with Chris Watts for the first time. NetflixNichol Kessinger claimed that Chris Watts assured her that he was in the process of divorcing his wife.As Kessinger later told police, she thought that Chris was cute, and she noticed that he wasnt wearing a wedding ring. They bonded over fitness and cars, and soon started going on dates. We started hanging out pretty frequently in the last week of June, she told police, according to reporting from NBC News. He informed me that he did have two kids, that he was currently in the process of a separation from his wife. As far as I knew, that was becoming pretty finalized. But Chris was lying. He was not in the process of separating from his wife, Shanann. In fact, they were expecting their third child together. Shanann Watts/NetflixChris Watts, his wife Shanann, and their daughters, Bella and Celeste. Then Chris Watts wife and daughters vanished from their Colorado home. The Murder Of Shanann, Bella, And Celeste WattsOn August 13, 2018, a friend of Shanann Watts grew concerned when she failed to respond to text messages and missed a doctors appointment. They called the police, who conducted a welfare check. Chris Watts was at work, but there was no sign of Shanann Watts or their daughters. And though Chris said that Shanann had told him she was going to a friends house with the girls, police found her phone, keys, and purse at the house. With Shanann, Bella, and Celeste all seemingly missing, Chris Watts issued an emotional public plea for their return. Shanann, Bella, Celeste, if youre out there, just come back, like if somebody has her, just please bring her back, I need to see everybody, I need to see everybody, again, this house is not complete without anybody here, Chris Watts begged. Please bring them back.A Denver7 news interview with Chris Watts after he had murdered his family. But for Nichol Kessinger, the disappearance of Chris Watts family seemed suspicious from the beginning. For one, she hadnt known that Shanann was pregnant until she went missing. According to case files obtained by the Denver Post, Chris implied that he had just learned about the pregnancy himself, and that Shanann had told him that the baby was not his. Whats more, Chris had acted suspiciously. When Kessinger FaceTimed him on the night that his family disappeared, he was asleep, which struck her as odd given the situation. He was also lying on a mattress with no sheets, which also seemed strange, and seemed to have spent the day cleaning the house and doing laundry. And Chris seemed bizarrely nonchalant about his daughter Celestes epipen, which she needed for an extreme nut allergy.Nichol Kessinger began to suspect that Chris Watts was lying to her. So she called the police. Nichol Kessinger Alerts The PoliceI wonder if theres more to this story than I know because I think hes a really good guy, and you know, Im worried about his wife and kids, Nichol Kessinger told the police in a recorded conversation. And its just freaking me out because those little girls are just so little, and shes pregnant, you know? And its like wheres their mom?As the police noted: Nichol does not believe Chris ever went to look for his family She said [Chris] did not seem to be concerned as he should be and he was more concerned with their relationship.Weld County District Attorneys OfficeNichol Kessinger and Chris Watts. Kessinger believed Chris when he said he and his wife were separating, and she did not know that Shanann was pregnant. Cooperating with the police, Kessinger told investigators that she had confronted Chris about his familys disappearance. I kept asking him, What did you do, Chris? What did you do?' she said. I asked, Wheres your family? I texted Chris one last time, and I told him, If you did anything bad, youre going to ruin your life and youre going to ruin my life. I promise you that. And he responded, I didnt hurt my family, Nicky.'That was the last time that Nichol Kessinger and Chris Watts spoke.Nichol Kessinger turned out to have information that I can best describe as being a bombshell, remarked Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke. But by that point Chris Watts family was already dead. He had strangled Shanann, smothered Bella and Celeste, and then dumped all three bodies at an oil site where he worked. All I could feel was now I was free to be with Nikki, he later wrote. Feelings of my love for her was overcoming me. I felt no remorse.Where Is Nichol Kessinger Today? It didnt take long for Chris Watts lies to catch up with him. On August 15, he admitted to murdering his wife, though he initially claimed that he had done so because she was strangling their daughters. The next day, their bodies were recovered. Shanann had been buried in a shallow grave; Bella and Celeste had been dropped in oil tanks. Weld County District Attorneys OfficeChris Watts mugshot. He was sentenced to life in prison.Chris Watts later plead guilty, and was sentenced to life in prison in 2018. But what happened to Nichol Kessinger? As the ex-girlfriend of Chris Watts, she became the subject of public scrutiny. Her Internet searches, which included browsing for wedding dresses and reading about Amber Fey, the girlfriend of convicted murderer Scott Peterson, were widely published, and her complicity in the murder of Shanann, Bella, and Celeste Watts was openly debated online. But Kessinger said nothing about the case for years. In 2018, she spoke out for the first time in an interview with the Denver Post. I dont think there is a logical explanation for what he did, Kessinger said. Its a senseless act, and its horrific.Since then, Nichol Kessinger has more or less disappeared from public life. Some outlets report that shes in witness protection, though this is unconfirmed. Her whereabouts today are unknown, and she has not commented further on Chris Watts. His location, however, is assured. He will spend the rest of his life in prison. After reading about Nichol Kessinger, the ex-girlfriend of murderer Chris Watts, discover the chilling story of Charles Stuart, the Boston man who shot his pregnant wife to death then tried to blame it on a Black carjacker. Or, learn about John List, the man who murdered his entire family and got away with it for 18 years. The post Who Is Nichol Kessinger? The Tragic Story Of August Landmesser, The Man Allegedly Caught On Camera Refusing To Salute Adolf Hitler
Public DomainIrma Eckler believes that the man silently resisting Hitler in this 1936 photo is her father, August Landmesser. In June 1936, a camera captured a group of German shipyard workers saluting Adolf Hitler as a new training vessel was launched in Hamburg. But one man stood with his arms crossed, seemingly refusing to join his colleagues in their praise for the Fhrer. Decades later, a woman came forward claiming that the lone dissident was her father, August Landmesser.Landmesser joined the Nazi Party in 1931 to find employment, but he didnt agree with many of the regimes beliefs. In fact, he fell in love with a Jewish woman named Irma Eckler, and he tried to marry her in 1935. The newly-enacted Nuremberg Laws prevented their union. Two years later, Landmesser tried to flee Germany with Eckler and their young daughter, but he was arrested for dishonoring the race. In 1938, he and Eckler were sent to concentration camps. Landmesser was ultimately released, but Eckler didnt make it out alive.Landmesser was then drafted into a penal battalion, and he was likely killed in action in Croatia in 1944. His story could have been lost, but his daughter Irene saw the photo from the shipyard published in a German newspaper in 1991. She believed that August Landmesser was the man seen crossing his arms, and she spent the next several years ensuring that the world didnt forget her fathers bravery.August Landmessers Life Before World War IIAugust Landmesser was born in Germany in May 1910. He joined the Nazi Party in his early 20s, hoping that his membership would make it easier for him to secure a job. However, he was expelled just four years later because hed fallen in love with a Jewish woman.Public DomainIrma Eckler was killed at an extermination center during the Holocaust.Irma Eckler was from a Jewish family, but she didnt grow up practicing the religion, and shed reportedly converted to Protestantism in 1931. But this didnt matter to the Nazis. According to their beliefs, Ecklers blood was tainted, and Landmesser was making the Aryan race impure through his relationship with her.Around September 1935, Landmesser tried to marry Eckler. However, the Nuremberg Laws had just gone into effect. These new rules stated, Marriages between Jews and nationals of German or related blood are forbidden. Marriages contracted in spite of this fact are invalid.A month later, Landmesser and Ecklers first daughter, Ingrid, was born. Desperate to save his family from the danger looming on the horizon, Landmesser tried to take them to Denmark in 1937. When they reached the German border, Landmesser was detained and charged with dishonoring the race. He was let off with a warning after he argued that Eckler may not be fully Jewish, but he was informed that a repeat offense would lead to prosecution.Public DomainAugust Landmesser before his arrest for dishonoring the race.Still, August Landmesser refused to abandon his family. Eckler was pregnant with their second child, and he tried everything in his power to keep them all together.Tragically, his efforts were not enough. The Grim Fate Of August Landmesser And Irma EcklerMany sources state that Irma Eckler was arrested while pregnant and gave birth to her second daughter, Irene, in prison. She was never released, and Landmesser never met his youngest child. However, this doesnt seem to be the case.According to A Family Torn Apart by Rassenschande, the book Irene Eckler published about her family in the 1990s, her entire family was together at least once. Landmesser was likely in custody when Irene was born, but he was released in May 1938 and reunited with Eckler and their daughters.Family PhotoThe only known photo of August Landmesser with his wife and two daughters, taken in the summer of 1938.But two months later, he was arrested once more for his relationship with Eckler. Landmesser was sentenced to two years at Brgermoor Prison Camp. He would never see Irma Eckler again.Eckler was detained by the Gestapo in July 1938. Ingrid and Irene were sent to an orphanage, though Ingrid was eventually able to live with her maternal grandmother. Eckler, meanwhile, was imprisoned at various concentration camps over the next four years before she was sent to Ravensbrck, the all-female concentration camp. There are few records pertaining to Ecklers arrest, but she likely died in a gas chamber at Bernburg Euthanasia Center in 1942.August Landmesser finished his prison sentence in early 1941. He visited his daughters from time to time, but for reasons that are unclear, they never lived together. This may be because Landmesser was considered Aryan while his daughters were classified as Jewish. Its also possible that he didnt want to unnecessarily draw the governments attention to the girls.Public DomainIts believed that August Landmesser died fighting in Croatia in 1944, at age 34.Regardless, Landmessers freedom didnt last long. In February 1944, he was drafted into a German penal battalion. That November, his family was informed that he was missing. Its most likely that August Landmesser died in battle in Croatia in October 1944 at age 34.His tragic story wouldnt come to light for nearly 50 years, when Irene Eckler recognized her fathers face in a crowd at Hamburgs Blohm+Voss shipyard.Who Is The Man Refusing To Salute Hitler? In 1991, the German newspaper Die Zeit published a photo taken on June 13, 1936. It showed the crowd at Blohm+Voss shipyard during the launch of the Horst Wessel, a Kriegsmarine training ship.Public DomainA closer view of the man believed to be August Landmesser.Everyone in the image is raising their arm in a salute to Hitler except for one man. He stands at the back of the crowd with his arms crossed, refusing to join the Heil to the Fhrer. Irene was convinced that the man was her father, August Landmesser. But not everyone agrees.Another family came forward claiming that the man in the photo was Gustav Wegert, a shipyard employee who always refused to salute Hitler on religious grounds. According to a website created by Wegerts daughter, Gustav never raised his arm for the Nazi salute. If someone greet[ed] him with Heil Hitler, he answered with a simple, Guten Tag.'Wegert FamilyThe family of Gustav Wegert (right) believes that he may be the man pictured with his arms crossed, not August Landmesser. Both Wegert and Landmesser resemble the man in the photo, so we may never know the truth about the dissidents identity. Landmessers story has spread further due to its tragic outcome, but based on historical evidence, Wegert may very well be the mysterious figure in the image. But even if August Landmesser isnt the man refusing to salute Hitler, he certainly stood up to the Nazi regime in his own way. His dedication to Irma Eckler was absolute. Indeed, their marriage was retroactively recognized by the German government in 1951. Unfortunately, it was far too late for the doomed couple. After reading about the tragic life and death of August Landmesser, learn about Franz Jgersttter, the man who chose to die rather than obey Hitler. Then, go inside the story of Paul Grninger, the Swiss border commander who saved thousands of Jewish people during World War II.The post The Tragic Story Of August Landmesser, The Man Allegedly Caught On Camera Refusing To Salute Adolf Hitler appeared first on All That's Interesting.
