Baby Boy ~ My Companionand Nurse!
On Dec. 20th, 2013 I fell trying to step back and sit in my wheelchair. I had washed my hair in the kitchen sink and didn't want to drip water all over the floor lest I fall. Ironygotta love it. I fractured my clavicle and dislocated my right shoulder. I managed to squirm to the table and get my cell. A friend came over and helped me pop the head into the socket. I was an RN prior to being hit by a car as a pedestrian. I had no money for the ER bill. HMO. ER = life-threatening emergencies. Baby boy stayed right next to me. He started acting oddly, nudging my right breast with his nose, and licking the chestwall whenever he could get to it. I finally discovered the lump, already metastasized into the chest wall. Went through the process. Radical mastectomy on Feb. 22, 2014. I had never spent more than a night apart from Baby Boy. My friend sneaked him into the hospital to visit me. He climbed onto my belly making certain not to go near the dressing. When I arrived home, my darling feechild was joined to me belly-to-belly or belly-to-left-chest. He would sniff the dressing and drains three to four times a day, never once coming in contact with the dressing or drains. On day four at home, his behavior changed. He sniffed frequently, every 15 minutes or so. He would also gently paw my chest next to the dressing. I didn't yet have supplies to redress it. After a $750.00 copay, I couldn't afford out of pocket for ABDs or gauze 4X4s. Or tape. So I called Dr. Brown, the surgeon. I told him what Baby Boy was doing. Doc Brown sniffed too, but in derision. Eventually he said, "If it will make you feel better, come to the office and I'll check things out. My friend came over and drove me to the office. When he removed the dressing there was a one centemeter induration (redness around the incision), slight swelling and some yellow drainage. Infection, but in the early stage, requiring only an oral antibiotic. Not only did he sooth me and keep me company. He saved my life. Mamogram six months earlier was negative and the previous month I did not detect the lump during self-exam. When it was removed in February it was 1 inch X .75 inch. Very aggressive strain of cancer. Now I am post-chemo and in remission. Thank you Baby Boy!

How the Summer of the Crash-Out Exposes the Real Root of Our Exhaustion
How the Summer of the Crash-Out Exposes the Real Root of Our Exhaustion Just today, I submitted a book proposal to an agent and received an instant reply that explained she isn’t reading new pitches until September. At the bottom of her email, she included a quote by John Lubbock: “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur...
