The Remains Of A Danish Warship Were Just Found In Copenhagen Harbor 225 Years After It Was Sunk By The British
The Viking Ship Museum in RoskildeA metal insignia that was recovered from the wreck of the Dannebroge. In preparation for the construction of an artificial island in Copenhagen, Denmark, archaeologists have been surveying the harbors seabed. Theyve found a number of fascinating underwater artifacts so far, including several unknown shipwrecks and the sunken remains of the worlds largest 15thcentury cog. But they just made their most exciting discovery yet: the Dannebroge, a famous warship that was sunk in 1801.The Dannebroge was destroyed by a British fleet led by Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson during the fierce Battle of Copenhagen. Of its crew of 357, 53 died onboard and 19 were never found. But the discovery of human remains amid the shipwreck suggests that some of these fallen sailors may finally be recovered at long last.Discovering The Danish Warship Dannebroge In Copenhagen HarborThe Viking Ship Museum in RoskildeOne of the cannons from the Dannebroge, which was recently found by underwater archaeologists off the coast of Copenhagen.According to a statement from the The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, the Dannebroge was discovered during an ongoing archaeological project to inspect the waters of Copenhagen Harbor ahead of the construction of an artificial island. At the end of 2025, they detected a large shipwreck roughly 50 feet beneath the surface that appears to be the Dannebroge. The dimensions of the timbers correspond exactly to the drawings of [Dannebroge] that survive, and the dendrochronological dating matches the vessels year of construction in 1772, said Otto Uldum, a maritime archaeologist with the museum and the leader of the excavation. So we are stating this with a degree of certainty that borders on absolute. He added that the area near the ship is also littered with cannonballs and bar shot and that marine archaeologists have also found two cannons.Whats more, archaeologists uncovered human remains amid the shipwreck rib bones and jaw bones as well as objects like shoes and metal insignias that once belonged to the ships crew. The Viking Ship Museum in RoskildeA lower jawbone recovered from the wreck of the Dannebroge that likely belonged to one of its lost crew members. We have found a number of personal belongings, Uldum explained. Shoes and fragments of clothing, and various small items the sailors would have carried with them clay pipes, uniform insignia, and weapons. And we have also found remains of one of the 19 people who are listed as missing.Indeed, the newly discovered wreck of the Dannebroge has offered fresh insights into the dramatic clash in which it met its end.How The Dannebroge Sank During The Battle Of Copenhagen In 1801The Viking Ship Museum in RoskildeGrape shot found near the wreck of the Dannebroge. The Battle of Copenhagen took place almost exactly 225 years ago, on April 2, 1801. The British, fearful that Denmark would align with France in the Napoleonic Wars, sent a fleet of almost 40 ships commanded by Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. The Danes, outnumbered and outgunned, set up a blockade of ships in Copenhagen Harbor, hoping to repel the British. At 10:15 a.m., the battle began.Nelson immediately targeted Dannebroge, the center of Denmarks defensive line. Though the ship was armed with dozens of guns, it was unable to defend itself against the British onslaught. Not only did persistent attacks from the British fleet clear the ships deck of both its guns and its crew, but incendiary shells caused a fire to break out onboard.Royal Museums GreenwichA depiction of the Battle of Copenhagen, which pitted a powerful British fleet against a much smaller Danish one.During the battle, Nelson famously ignored a signal from a superior to cease firing and withdraw. Blind in one eye, Nelson stated: I have only one eye I have the right to be blind sometimes. He then lifted his telescope to his blind eye and declared, I see no signal, and continued to fire upon the Danish fleet. Thus we have the phrase turn a blind eye.At 4 p.m., Denmark agreed to a ceasefire. Just 30 minutes later, the Dannebroge, which had drifted toward the north, exploded with what was remembered as a deafening roar that can be heard across the entire city. For the next 225 years, the ship was lost beneath the murky waters of Copenhagen Harbor. But now, its wreck has been found, and every object thats recovered will surely add to the story about its final chapter. We are now gaining an archaeological body of sources on the Battle of Copenhagen, and that is something entirely new. It is not something that has previously been excavated or studied archaeologically, Uldum remarked. He added: Every time we say even a little something about a shoe or a bone, it matters just a bit more, because this is actually the Battle of Copenhagen. After reading about the Danish warship that was discovered off the coast of Copenhagen, discover the stories behind some of historys most famous shipwrecks. Then, read about the 1708 sinking of the San Jose and why its considered the holy grail of shipwrecks. The post The Remains Of A Danish Warship Were Just Found In Copenhagen Harbor 225 Years After It Was Sunk By The British appeared first on All That's Interesting.

The Haunting Story Of Bryce Laspisa And His Unsolved Disappearance In Southern California
In the early hours of August 30, 2013, 19-year-old Bryce Laspisa was on his way to his parents house in Laguna Niguel, California. At 2 a.m., he called his mother to tell her that he was pulling off to the side of Interstate 5 in the Sierra Pelona Mountains. It was the last Michael and Karen Laspisa heard from their son. What should have been a three-hour afternoon drive turned into half a day of waiting. When the doorbell rang the next morning, the Laspisas hoped to see their son waiting for them. Instead, they received news no parent wants to hear: Laspisas car had been found wrecked near Castaic Lake.In the early morning hours of August 30, 2013, Bryce Laspisa was seen by security cameras driving up a mountain road toward a recreation area in Castaic Lake, California twice in a row then he was never seen again. There was no trace of Bryce Laspisa, and to this day, none has been found. Heres the whole story of one of the most tragic and baffling missing persons cases in modern history.Bryce Laspisas Happy Childhood Before The Trouble BeganFIND BRYCE LASPISA/FacebookKaren and Michael Laspisa retired early before moving their son to California from suburban Illinois.Bryce Laspisa was an only child born on April 30, 1994, to Karen and Michael Laspisa in Springfield, Illinois. He demonstrated artistic talent early on as well as an easy, charming manner which made it easy for him to win friends. In 2012, Laspisa graduated from Naperville Central High School outside of Chicago. His parents, newly retired, decided to move the family to California, settling in Laguna Niguel, Orange County. Find Bryce Laspisa/FacebookBryce Laspisa as a child with his mother, Karen.Soon after arriving, Laspisa moved north to Roseville, just 90 miles past Sacramento. He was about to begin his freshman year studying graphic and industrial design at Sierra College. His first year went smoothly. He got good grades, formed a close friendship with his roommate, Sean Dixon, and began dating fellow student Kim Sly. During summer break, he told his parents, girlfriend, and friends that he was eager to go back to school. All seemed well, and his future was bright.Substance Abuse Issues Begin In CollegeFacebookIve thought about every possible scenario about where he could be and what couldve happened to him, Kim Sly later said about her boyfriend, Bryce Laspisa. When Bryce Laspisa returned to Sierra two weeks before classes were to resume, he seemed fresh and eager. Karen described a phone call they had after his return as normal conversation. He attended classes and reunited with his friends.Soon, however, Laspisas life seemed to slowly unravel. Sean and Kim noticed subtle changes in his behavior: He was becoming more withdrawn, erratic, depressed. Kim recalled that Laspisa admitted to taking Vyvanse, an amphetamine derivative used to treat ADHD, a condition he didnt have and with severe side effects including psychosis, depression, and mania.FacebookA selfie of Bryce and Kim together.Sean Dixon reported that Laspisa began drinking hard liquor every day as much as two fifths in a single weekend and confirmed Slys claim that his roommate had been taking Vyvanse.Laspisa confessed to Kim that he took the drug to stay up playing video games, and although she was alarmed, he seemed dismissive. Something seemed to have gone terribly wrong with him, but no one was quite sure what had happened.Bryce Laspisas Increasingly Unusual Behavior Before His DisappearanceFind Bryce Laspisa/FacebookBryce Laspisa pictured with his parents Michael and Karen.According to Sean and Kim, Bryces use of Vyvanse became alarmingly frequent during the first two weeks of the fall semester. On August 27, he broke up with Kim by text message, saying that shed be better off without [him]. He also sent Sean an unusually heartfelt text message reading I love you bro, seriously. You are the best person Ive ever met. You saved my soul. That same day, hed given Sean his Xbox and gave away a pair of diamond earrings from his mother. On August 28, Sean called Karen Laspisa to tell her that he was worried about her son. Later that night, Bryce called his mother. He was at Kims home, and she was concerned enough about his behavior that shed taken the keys to his 2003 Toyota Highlander away, believing that he was in no condition to drive. He informed his mother of the argument, and Karen quickly convinced Kim to return his keys and told her son to go home to bed.Karen offered to fly north to check on him, but he told her not to come until hed spoken to her the next day. I have a lot to talk to you about, he said. He left Kims apartment at 11:30 p.m.A Long, Fateful Drive Into The California NightWikimedia CommonsCastaic Lake, where Bryce Laspisas car was later discovered. Some investigators believe that he made a failed suicide attempt before setting off to start a new life in disguise. At 1 a.m. on August 29, Bryce Laspisa called his mother once more. Although she assumed he was calling from his apartment, phone records later showed that he called from a location about an hours drive south of Rocklin. Then, at 11 a.m., she and her husband were notified that Bryce had used their insurances roadside assistance service. A man named Christian, owner of Castro Tire and Gas in the town of Buttonwillow, reported that he delivered three gallons of gasoline to their son after he ran out of fuel around 9 a.m. Christian offered to return to the spot where hed seen Laspisa. There, he discovered Laspisa hadnt moved in hours. Christian approached to tell him that his parents were worried, and called them to let them know their sons location. Laspisa agreed to make the three-hour drive home, and Christian watched as he drove off around 3 p.m.Hours passed, and still the Laspisas hadnt heard from Bryce, so they reluctantly filed a missing persons report with the Orange County Sheriffs Department. By tracking his cell phone, two officers were able to locate him just a few miles from where Christian had seen him. The officers reported that he seemed lucid and friendly, and showed no signs of intoxication, nor were any drugs or alcohol found in his vehicle. The police told Bryce that his parents were worried, and when he seemed hesitant to call them, finally dialed for him. Karen told him to come home, and called Christian to check on him. By this point, Michael and Karen were relieved when Christian called to confirm that their son had gotten back onto I-5 and headed south.Bryce Laspisas Baffling DisappearanceLos Angeles County Sheriffs DepartmentLarge numbers of searchers and police were called in to search for Bryce Laspisa, but every lead hit a dead-end.At 2 a.m. on August 30, Bryce Laspisa called his mother one last time to tell her that he was too tired to drive anymore and would pull off the road to sleep. She agreed with the decision, and expected to see him in the morning. But when the doorbell rang six hours later, it wasnt their son the Laspisas found at their doorstep, but a California Highway Patrol Officer. Laspisas car had been found abandoned near Castaic Lake. The rear window had been shattered, and his phone, laptop, and wallet were found inside, but there was no trace of Bryce himself.Surveillance footage showed that at 2:15 a.m., he turned onto an access road rather than pulling off for a roadside nap. Divers dredged Castaic Lake and found no trace of him. Police dogs tracked his scent across a bridge to a nearby truck stop, where the trail went cold. What Happened To Bryce Laspisa? The Santa Clarita Valley SignalThe Laspisas continue to hold out hope that their son survived. On Sept. 4, 2013, charred remains found near Castaic Lake were found not to belong to Bryce Laspisa. Four years later, a skull found off nearby Templin Highway was likewise ruled out. Similar reports over the years have also left investigators empty-handed.Without a body, detectives were unable to close the case. A number of theories were proposed to explain Laspisas disappearance. That hed left behind his phone and wallet could indicate that he intended to abandon his old life for a new one, either under an assumed identity or off the grid. Its possible that his drug and alcohol use provoked a psychotic break, or withdrawal from Vyvanse caused a sudden severe depression. Its also possible that he did die on or around the night of August 30, and his remains have yet to be found.National Center for Missing & Exploited ChildrenBryce Laspisa when he went missing as a young adult and an age-progression showing what he may look like now.Whatever the truth, his disappearance was a tragedy for those close to him. Ill never give up hope, but its really difficult, his mother told reporters. Its gut-wrenching, every day not knowing. Its a living nightmare. As of August 2023, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children released an age-progressed image of Bryce at age 29, urging anyone with more information to come forward. In the years since his disappearance, no further clues have emerged. His parents still issue missing persons posters, and remain hopeful that someday theyll learn the truth. Now that youve learned about the sad mystery of Bryce Laspisas inexplicable disappearance, read about the equally baffling vanishing of Oklahomas Jamison family. What Really Happened The Night Darlie Routiers Two Sons Were Murdered?
In the early morning hours of June 6, 1996, 911 dispatchers in Rowlett, Texas received a panicked call from 26-year-old Darlie Routier. She claimed that an intruder had broken into her home and stabbed her two sons, Devon and Damon, as well as herself. Her other child, an infant named Drake, was upstairs asleep with her husband Darin and both were unharmed. When police arrived, they found Devon already dead. Damon died on the ambulance ride to the hospital. Darlie Routier herself had suffered bruises and cuts to her throat and right arm and was briefly hospitalized.Somebody came in, they broke in and just stabbed me and my children! she screamed during the 911 call.YouTubeDarlie Routier and her sons Devon, Damon, and Drake. She described the attacker as a white male about six feet tall. Police found a window screen in the garage had been cut, suggesting an entryway for the attacker to gain access to the home. However, holes soon began to appear in Routiers intruder story. Not long after, infamous footage surfaced that showed her laughing and spraying silly string around her sons grave. It wasnt long before many began to wonder whether Darlie Routier had in fact killed her sons herself. The Evidence Doesnt Add UpThe Associated PressDevon (left) and Damon Routier in 1995.Forensic analysis showed evidence that was inconsistent with what Darlie Routier had told the police and suspicion began to form around her. For starters, the murder weapon was a knife that had come from Routiers own kitchen, which raised suspicion that there had really been an intruder. Secondly, a motive for the break-in was unclear, but it seemed unlikely that it was robbery as there had been many valuables lying out in plain sight that had not been taken.Furthermore, forensic analysis of the blood spatters around the house revealed patterns that were inconsistent with Routiers version of events. The pattern of blood drops in the kitchen seemed to come from someone who had been standing still, not running after an attacker, as Routier had claimed she had done.Next, blood spatter on the back shoulder of Routiers nightshirt was consistent with the idea that she was the one who had done the stabbing. And the puncture wounds on the shirt didnt match any wounds on her body, suggesting that the shirt was perhaps purposefully stabbed by her to help serve as evidence for her cover-up story.PennLiveDarlie RoutierIn addition, forensic analysts found evidence of large amounts of Routiers blood in and around the kitchen sink, suggesting that she had stood at that sink to cut her own throat and arm which is what someone who purposely cut themselves in order to have wounds to show authorities as a cover might do. Finally, forensic experts found evidence of fiberglass rods on a bread knife in the kitchen that matched the fiberglass rods of the window screen that had been cut in the garage. Authorities had thought that the cut screen was the supposed intruders entry point into the house. But why would an intruder put the knife back?It seemed as though the attacker had been inside the house the whole time. And because husband Darin was with infant Drake the whole time, suspicion quickly fell on Darlie Routier. The Case Against Darlie Routier Takes ShapeFor starters, the initial 911 call soon began to seem suspicious.Officers testified that Darlie Routier seemed eerily calm and alert during the call and that she failed to follow instructions about applying pressure to Damons wound. (However, advocates for her innocence point to the fact that she was still audibly screaming during the call and that she may not have followed instructions because she was simply in shock.)Perhaps even more suspicious was the fact that Routier made a point of telling the dispatcher on the call that she had touched the knife, saying, I wonder if we could have gotten the prints maybe. As Officer David Waddell said at trial, I thought if she was worried about fingerprints on a knife, she could certainly take care of her kids.Next, after the call ended and rescue workers arrived, it seemed incriminating that Routier didnt follow paramedics as they took Damon away or ask where they were taking him. Later, hospital nurses said that her behavior upon Damons death just wasnt what youd expect from a mother who just lost two children. In addition, her story about the intruder didnt seem to make sense. The window in the garage where the intruder allegedly entered just wasnt disturbed in a way that it would have been if someone had come in from the outside. And the utility room where the murder weapon was supposedly dropped just didnt have blood spatter consistent with it being dropped there.Nevertheless, the defense would later claim that Darlie Routier simply would have had no time to stage a crime scene and that unidentified bloody fingerprints on the coffee table and in the garage likely came from the alleged intruder. The Notorious Silly String VideoThe infamous footage of Darlie Routier laughing and spraying silly string around her sons grave.Perhaps the most damning evidence against Darlie Routier was supplied by Routier herself. She had invited local news crews to film her and her family and friends celebrating what would have been her son Devons seventh birthday at the gravesite eight days after their deaths. Cameras then captured Routier and company chewing gum, laughing, singing, and spraying silly string over the graves.Prosecutor Greg Davis saw the video and seized upon it as proof that she showed no grief over the death of her sons. Her upbeat behavior seemed very unusual for a woman who had lost two sons a mere week ago. Four days after the video was released, Routier was arrested and charged with premeditated murder.CNNMugshot of Darlie Routier.During the trial, the prosecution relied heavily on the video from the graveside birthday ceremony. They claimed she was a shallow and materialistic woman with no remorse. They said she wanted her sons gone because they were too much responsibility and got in the way of her desired lifestyle. The defense team countered that Darlie Routier had no motive to murder her own children. The prosecution said her motive was that she was no longer the glamorous, blond center of attention and was angry at her kids.Furthermore, the defense said, the wound on her neck was only two inches away from her carotid artery, which was not consistent with a self-inflicted injury. Routiers supporters also pointed out that the silly string video had been edited to make her appear heartless. She had actually held a somber ceremony honoring the two boys before the more jovial birthday party. However, the news cameras never showed it.Darlie Routiers first prison interview. They ended up deliberating on the Silly String, Routiers mother Darlie Kee later told The Dallas Morning News. Silly String is not a lethal weapon. As Routier herself later said about the video, He wanted to be seven. I did the only thing I knew to do to honor him and give him all his wishes because he wasnt here anymore. But how do you know what youre going to do when you lose two children? How do you know how youre going to act?The Fate Of Darlie Routier And The State Of Her Case TodayRon Heflin/AP PhotoDarlie Routier being escorted into prison following her sentencing. February 5, 1997.Ultimately, after the prosecution and defense battled it out, Darlie Routier was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Damon on February 4, 1997 and sent to death row. After years of legal wrangling, Routier appealed her conviction in 2001 only to have it upheld in 2003. Four years later, her attorneys asked that DNA testing which they feel will exonerate her be used, though that has yet to be done. Those who believe Routier is innocent often cite the lack of DNA evidence and the fact that a bloody sock, presumably belonging to the supposed intruder, was found in the alleyway behind the family home (among other pieces of evidence). The Dallas Morning NewsDarlie Routier in 2018.Whether innocent or guilty, she is currently being held at the Mountain View Unit prison in Gatesville, Texas, awaiting execution. To this day, Darlie Routier maintains that she is innocent. As she said from prison just after her sons deaths, I did not kill my children. Thats ridiculous. All of a sudden I woke up, stabbed my kids, tried to slit my head off? Come on.Whether thats true may never be known for sure. After this look at the baffling case of Darlie Routier, read about Nannie Doss, who spent decades murdering relatives and husbands. The Unbelievable Story Of Frank Dux, The Self-Proclaimed Martial Arts Legend Who Inspired Bloodsport
When Bloodsport hit theaters in 1988, no one quite knew what to make of the films outro text, which claimed it was based on a true story of Frank Dux, who participated in the same secret international martial arts tournament depicted in the movie. But in the years since, Bloodsport has become an action cult classic recognized for bringing Jean-Claude Van Damme to American audiences for the very first time. And remarkably, it really was based on a true story or at least a story that the real-life Frank Dux sold to a screenwriter.Gnration JCVD/FacebookFrank Dux (right) with Jean-Claude Van Damme. As told in his memoir The Secret Man: An American Warriors Uncensored Story, Frank Dux was a teenager when he traveled to Japan and stunned its warrior class with his skills. After enlisting in the Marine Corps, he competed in the Kumite an illegal tournament in the Bahamas that served as the inspiration for the movie.Emerging victorious, Dux returned to the U.S. with a ceremonial sword and spent the next six years on secret missions across Southeast Asia for the CIA. The only problem is that there is no evidence that any of it actually happened at all.The Unbelievable Life Of Frank DuxFrank William Dux was born on April 6, 1956, in Toronto, Canada, but moved to California with his family when he was seven. He was a self-described joke at Ulysses S. Grant High School in the San Fernando Valley. That is, until the tutelage of master Senzo Tiger Tanaka who brought him to Japan for ninja training. When the boy reached 16 years of age, Tanaka brought him to Japan, to the legendary Ninja land of Masuda, Frank Dux wrote in his memoir. There, the boys outstanding abilities shocked and pleased the Ninja community when he tested for the right to call himself Ninja.OfficialFrankDux/FacebookFrank Dux claimed to be a ninja and CIA operative. In 1975, Dux enlisted in the Marine Corps but was secretly invited to the 60-round Kumite championship in Nassau. He was the first westerner to win the ruthless tournament, setting world records for most consecutive knockouts (56), the fastest knockout (3.2 seconds), and the fastest punch (0.12 seconds).Back in the Marine Corps and later with the CIA, Dux claimed to have been sent on covert missions to destroy a Nicaraguan fuel depot and an Iraqi chemical weapons plant. His valor earned him the Medal of Honor, which he said he received in secret.Meanwhile, Dux claimed that he sold off the sword he claimed to have won as a prize in the tournament to pay off pirates who foolishly chose to fight him.We took arms up and fought boat pirates and we got these kids free, said Dux. Im in touch with some of them, and they love me to death. And, Ill tell you, Ive got one kid whos about 15 years old. All I have to do is look cross-eyed at one guy, and hell kill for me.An exhausted warrior, Frank Dux left that life behind to teach ninjutsu back in the Valley. But his escapades spread far and wide through magazines like Black Belt. And screenwriter Sheldon Lettich cemented them for good by using Dux as his basis for Bloodsport. But those who really knew Dux told a starkly different story. The Mysterious Holes In The True Story Of BloodsportAs the world transitioned from the postal service to emails and smartphones, Duxs story became increasingly non-credible. His military record showed he never left San Diego. His only injury was falling off a truck he was told to paint, while the medals he later presented were mismatched non-Marine Corp ribbons. His medical file noted that on Jan. 22, 1978, Dux was referred for psychiatric evaluation for flighty and disconnected ideas. One of these was presumably Duxs claim that CIA Director William Casey himself had sent Dux on his missions instructing the ninja from the secret confines of a mens room.OfficialFrankDux/FacebookMost of Frank Duxs medals were mismatched and from a different branch than the Marine Corps. And a journalist found that the Kumite trophy Dux displayed was made by a local shop in the San Fernando Valley. As for his mentor, Frank Dux claimed Tanaka died on July 30, 1975, and was buried in California by a clan of ninjas. But the state of California lists no deaths under the Tanaka name in the 1970s. So Dux pointed to the conspiracy of silence involving the CIA, ninjas, and magazine publishers eager to retract their glowing stories on him. There is not Mr. Tanaka in Japanese history, said ninja master Shoto Tanemura. Many crazy guys stand up as Ninja masters. In fact, the only evidence for a fighter named Senzo Tanaka existing at all comes from Ian Flemingss James Bond novel, You Only Live Twice, where there is a ninja commander by that name.Furthermore, while Dux claimed he was allowed to speak about the illegal Kumite championship and that the production company that made Bloodsport had investigated his claims before shooting, the screenwriter himself admitted, Even we werent able to verify the facts. We were taking Frank on his word.Nonetheless, Dux became a Hollywood player before suing Jean-Claude Van Damme in 1996. Claiming he was owed $50,000 for a film that was never made when the production company folded, Dux said the story was based on his life, but that evidence linking him to the film script had been destroyed in the 1994 earthquake.Ultimately, the trial outcome was a metaphor for Frank Dux himself. He received a story by credit. After learning about Frank Dux, read about young Danny Trejos rise from prison riots to Hollywood stardom. Then, learn about Joaquin Murrieta, the man whose epic quest for revenge inspired the Legend of Zorro. The post The Unbelievable Story Of Frank Dux, The Self-Proclaimed Martial Arts Legend Who Inspired Bloodsport appeared first on All That's Interesting.
