A Hiker Just Stumbled Upon An Ancient Figurine Of A Bulls Head On The Spanish Island Of Mallorca
Almallutx: ArqueoTramuntana/FacebookThe bulls head figurine was found completely by chance some 2,200 years or more after it was made. While hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range on the Spanish island of Mallorca, a man happened to spot a tiny object. It soon became clear that hed stumbled upon a bronze bulls head figurine that archaeologists believe is at least 2,200 years old. This tiny artifact an incredibly rare and surprising find remains somewhat mysterious. However, archaeologists say it bears some resemblance to other, more famous depictions of bulls found in the region, including a set of life-sized bronze bull heads from roughly the same period. The Chance Discovery Of An Ancient Bulls Head Figurine In Mallorcas Serra de Tramuntana MountainsAccording to reporting from Diario de Mallorca, the tiny bronze bulls head was indeed found entirely by chance. A hiker in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range happened to spot the artifact on a trail near the village of Valldemossa. The hiker asked friends if they knew any archaeologists, and ultimately got in touch with researcher and historian Jaume Dey, who passed the artifact to the Consell de Mallorca (Mallorca Council).Jaume DeyThe bulls head is believed to date back to at least 123 B.C.E.Archaeologists believe that the bulls head dates back to between 550 and 123 B.C.E., an era known as the post-Talaiotic period. Small enough to be held in the palm of the hand, the artifact is just 3.2 centimeters long, 1.7 centimeters tall, and 2.9 centimeters wide. The finely carved details make it very special, Dey explained to Diario de Mallorca. It stands out for its well-achieved proportions and the features of the horns, ears, muzzle, and eyes, as well as some incisions intended to highlight the animals features.Dey suspects that the bulls head could have once been part of a larger element. It could have been the head of a statue, for example, or perhaps a decorative motif placed on a larger bulls horn. Indeed, there is a small hole in the back of the piece, which suggests that it was originally connected to something else. And while questions about the bulls head remain, Dey believes that it may have a connection to a group of more famous Spanish bull artifacts from antiquity. How This Bronze Age Bulls Head May Connect To Other Artifacts Found In SpainBulls have long been an important animal in Spanish culture, and Dey suspects that the bulls head found in Serra de Tramuntana may have a connection to a set of other bull artifacts found in the Mallorcan town of Costitx. Discovered in the late 1800s, these three, life-size bronze bull heads date back to sometime between 550 and 200 B.C.E., roughly the same era as the newly-uncovered bulls head.Jaume DeyThe small bulls head bears some resemblance to the Costitx bulls, one of which is seen on the right above.According to Dey, the smaller bulls head bears a strong resemblance to two of the Costitx bulls, although its horns and ears are much smaller. Its as if we were looking at a representation of the head of a young bull or heifer, Dey remarked. If the artifacts are connected, the Costitx bulls may offer some hint about the origin and purpose of the smaller bulls head. Theyre thought to be depictions of a deity, or perhaps connected to the ancient practice of bull worship, found everywhere from Sumeria to Canaan. And the recently-discovered bulls head could fit into this interpretation as well.Regardless of its original meaning, however, the newly-uncovered bulls head is indisputably an important find. As Dey told Diario de Mallorca, three similar artifacts have documented, but have since vanished. Whats more, these bulls heads were all unearthed more than 50 years ago, with nothing similar found since. The bulls head discovered in Serra de Tramuntana is thus an incredibly rare find.Indeed, Dey is hopeful that this stunning relic could lead archaeologists to other discoveries in these mountains. As he explained to Diario de Mallorca, hes asked the Mallorca Council to conduct an archaeological survey of the area where the hiker found the bulls head in hopes of uncovering other similar artifacts from the regions ancient past. After reading about the tiny bronze bulls head found by a hiker on a trail in Spain, discover the gruesome story of champion matador Vctor Barrio, who was gored by a bull on live TV. Then, learn about the Brazen Bull, the legendary torture device that was allegedly used in ancient Greece. The post A Hiker Just Stumbled Upon An Ancient Figurine Of A Bulls Head On The Spanish Island Of Mallorca appeared first on All That's Interesting.

Inside The Downfall Of Rich Porter, The Legendary Harlem Crack Dealer
For users and innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire, the 1980s crack epidemic was an apocalyptic hellscape. For 25-year-old Rich Porter and his Harlem crew, it was heaven on Earth. While the New York Police Department considered him a middle-level crack dealer, Porter was raking in $50,000 per week. For a few short years, the Harlem native had it all: flashy clothes, women, luxury cars, and street fame. As chronicled in the 2002 film Paid In Full, however, Porters flamboyant lifestyle inevitably caught up with him in 1990. After a rival gang mutilated and killed his 12-year-old brother, Porter was murdered in cold blood by a friend.Rich Porter had more than a dozen luxury vehicles.Rich lied to me about something there was no reason to lie about, said Alpo Martinez. I gave him the opportunity to tell me the truth not once, but twice. He didnt die [after my accomplice shot him in the chest] so I shot him in the head. It wasnt personal. It was business. The Crack Boom In New YorkBorn on July 26, 1965, in New York City, Richard Porter was the eldest of three children who were lovingly raised by their mother Velma. His sister Patricia was three years younger, while his brother William was born when Porter was already a teenager. By that point, Porter had already begun selling crack across Harlem.Porter quickly rose through the ranks. Borough acquaintances Alpo Martinez and Azie Faison soon became fellow dealers, and Porter led a crew of street-level dealers. Mesmerized by his income, onlookers began calling him Richie Rich or Money Rich. By the time he was in his 20s, he owned more than a dozen luxury cars and was rumored never to wear the same outfit twice.Cornered by economic inequality and lack of opportunity, Rich Porter had committed to the life of a crack dealer. But much of his free time was spent taking care of his mother and siblings as well as his three children: Reshonia, Rhea, and Donnell.Everything changed at 4 p.m. on December 5, 1989, when 12-year-old William still hadnt returned home from school. Velma Porter walked to Public School 92 at 222 West 134th Street herself, in hopes of finding him along the way only to be informed he hadnt shown up that day, at all. An hour later, she found out why.Mommy, they have me, he cried on the phone. I dont know what they want. The receiver clicked off, only for another call several hours later to threaten the 44-year-old mother if she should call the police. The anonymous caller demanded $500,000 during a third call at 1 a.m. Tragically, the hopeless mother of three was forced to inform the man during a fourth call that she didnt have that kind of money. At 3 p.m. on December 6, the caller demanded to speak to Rich Porter. The ransom had dropped to $350,000 but came with instructions to visit the local McDonalds and look under the restroom sink.Porter deployed a family friend to do so who found Williams severed, two-inch index finger and an ominous cassette tape. The Murder Of Rich PorterWhile it remains unclear precisely where he had been abducted, William Porter was snatched from one of the four blocks separating his home on 132nd Street and his school. Within 48 hours, evidence he had been mutilated was discarded at the McDonalds on 125th and Broadway. The tape bore heartbreaking audio. They cutted my finger off, William said in a trembling voice. Please help me. They said if you dont do as they say they are going to cut my hand off. Please help. Get the money. I love you, Mommy. Tell Pat I love her.Rich Porter and his family were left in shambles, listening to the pre-teen sob for the rest of the tape. The kidnappers called to reiterate their demands at 9 p.m., with Porter claiming he only had $200,000 in available cash. While the abductors said theyd call him back in 10 minutes, they never did.Underworld Legends/FacebookA young Alpo Martinez. It was about an hour later that the family finally contacted police after an argument about the wisest course of action. On December 10, an unidentified child delivered a note to their apartment which stated simply: We still want the money the child is in pain and he needs medical attention. It tragically never came to that, as Rich Porter was found riddled with bullets on January 3, 1990, near Orchard Beach in the Bronx. Discovered by locals, he had $2,239 in his wallet. He had been shot in the head and chest numerous times, while his little brothers corpse would be found later that month in a pile of trash bags.Rich Porter was killed when Martinezs suspicions he had cut him out of deals turned lethal. Porter became a local legend immortalized by rappers like Jay-Z and 50 Cent. Turning informant in exchange for a lesser sentence, Martinez was released after 35 years in prison only to also be killed in the streets on October 31, 2021.After learning about Rich Porter, the infamous crack dealer of 1980s New York, read about how Michael Dowd became the NYPDs most corrupt cop. What Happened To Tyria Moore, The Girlfriend Of Aileen Wuornos?
YouTubeAileen Wuornos girlfriend Tyria Moore cooperated with police to finally put her behind bars.On a humid Florida evening in 1986, Tyria Moore met an exciting blonde named Aileen Wuornos at the Zodiac Bar in Daytona, Florida. Weeks earlier, Moore had left her conservative hometown of Cadiz, Ohio, to fully embrace being a lesbian. Unbeknownst to her, she was falling for a serial killer. As the relationship progressed and Tyria Moore became Aileen Wuornos girlfriend, Wuornos admitted that she had been in and out of jail for theft and armed robbery. She added that she had been abused and abandoned as a child and often used prostitution as a means to make money.Moore tried to discourage these behaviors in Wuornos, but their relationship took a turn in 1989 when Wuornos suddenly confessed that she had just killed a man.Wuornos told her that her victim was a client who had become abusive and that it was out of self-defense. Moore believed her, but then Wuornos killed again and again. Soon, Tyria Moore was forced to talk to the police. In the end, her testimony damned Wuornos and helped to put this infamous serial killer behind bars. While Moore has since been depicted in the 2003 film Monster, where the character of Selby Wall was based on her, little is known about what happened to Tyria Moore after her time with Wuornos. This is the true story of Aileen Wuornos girlfriend.Inside Tyria Moore And Aileen Wuornos RelationshipMoore was 24 years old when her relationship with 30-year-old Aileen Wuornos began. According to Wuornos biographer Sue Russell, the couples fateful encounter in Daytona in 1986 dictated the rest of their lives. From then on, they became inseparable, she said. That was the anchor that Aileen had been looking for.Moore had no qualms about living in motel rooms with Wuornos or crashing on the couches of friends for the four and a half years they were companions. But Moore did take issue with Wuornos tendency to turn to prostitution.Newmarket FilmsChristina Ricci (right) as the Tyria Moore composite character of Selby Wall in Monster (2003).Once I found out that she was prostituting, I did everything I could to help her stop doing that, said Moore. But then on Nov. 30, 1989, Wuornos came home claiming to have shot and killed a client of hers who raped and beat her.Moore believed her partner, particularly when the victim was identified as a convicted rapist named Richard Mallory. But then, Wuornos started to come home with the belongings of strangers.Unknown to Moore, Mallorys murder was followed by that of David Spears, who Wuornos shot six times in May 1990 and left naked in the woods. That same month, she shot rodeo worker Charles Carskadden nine times and similarly dumped his corpse. Then, on June 30, that same fate befell Peter Siems, a 65-year-old driving his 1988 Pontiac Sunbird from Florida to Arkansas. It is unclear what Aileen Wuornos girlfriend thought when she arrived home in his car one day.On July 4 of that year, Wuornos drove that car off the road, and while inspecting the abandoned crash site, police recovered prints from the car which were later traced to Daytona pawn shops where Wuornos had sold Peter Siems belongings. With Wuornos wanted for murder and her face plastered across the news, Moore left Florida to stay with her family in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Wuornos murdered three more men: a sausage salesman named Troy Burress, U.S. Air Force Major Charles Humphreys, and a trucker named Walter Antonio. Finally, Moore agreed to talk to police.Aileen Wuornos Girlfriend Helps Bring Her DownAileen Wuornos rampage came to an end when police arrested her on a warrant at The Last Resort biker bar in Volusia County, Florida, on Jan. 9, 1991. When Wuornos asked if she was being recorded, Moore said no.Youre innocent, Wuornos told her over the phone. Im not gonna let you go to jail. Listen, if I have to confess, I will. And on January 16, she did. [I dont want Moore to get] messed up for somethin I did, Wuornos reportedly told police. The Tragic Story Behind The Death Of Marilyn Monroe
In the pre-dawn hours of August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroes housekeeper Eunice Murray and her psychiatrist Ralph Greenson noticed she had become unresponsive inside the bedroom of her house at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. When they broke through her window, they realized the awful truth: Marilyn Monroe died in the waning hours of August 4, in what looked like a barbiturate overdose. She was just 36 years old.In life, Marilyn Monroe was a worldwide icon in an era when that truly meant something. The glamorous Hollywood star was not only beautiful, but she was also romantically linked to some of the most admired men of her time. When Marilyn Monroe died at 36, it left the world in shock.Monroe had married the legendary playwright Arthur Miller, after splitting with her previous husband, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio. She was friends with Frank Sinatra and had a sultry affair with John F. Kennedy. Monroe naturally positioned herself as a powerful woman that men of power needed by their side.Wikimedia CommonsBut it was her on-screen talent that truly made her shine. Monroes skirt blowing in the wind in The Seven Year Itch remains iconic to this day. And her comedic turn in Some Like it Hot turned standard fare into a timeless classic. She even sang Happy Birthday in front of an awestruck crowd to the President of the United States. Then, suddenly, the magnetic star was dead. It was August 1962 and the world was left wondering: How did Marilyn Monroe die?Marilyn Monroes Dramatic Rise To StardomBorn Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, Marilyn Monroes bubbly exterior guarded a deep interior fragility and a lifelong struggle with substance abuse. This, in turn, resulted from a rough childhood the star largely spent in foster homes.Wikimedia CommonsA young Norma Jean Mortenson, before she became Marilyn Monroe. The rise of Marilyn Monroe was thus all the more impressive, as the enormous leaps she made in the next two decades ultimately made her the most famous movie star in the world. By the 1950s, Monroes filmography had already grossed the modern equivalent of approximately $2 billion.Clearly, her desperate dream of growing up to be rich and famous had paid off in spades though the inherent trauma of her youth never left. Plagued by anxiety and depression, the young star regularly turned to drugs and alcohol for temporary relief.[She] was drinking champagne and straight vodka and occasionally popping a pill I said, Marilyn, the combination of pills and alcohol will kill you. And she said, It hasnt killed me yet. Then she took another drink and popped another pill. James Bacon, a close friend of Marilyn Monroe.Eventually, Monroes habits began affecting her work. Her continuous inability to show up to the set on time, if at all, alongside her failure to remember her lines when she did, got her fired from her last film, Somethings Got to Give. The iconic skirt-wrangling scene from The Seven Year Itch.Directory Billy Wilder later recalled that it was worth a weeks tormentto get three luminous minutes on the screen.Given her private struggles, its not so surprising that Marilyn Monroes death in 1962 would be considered a suicide.Marilyn Monroe Is Found DeadThough John F. Kennedys brother-in-law Peter Lawford wasnt there when she died, the actor was the last person to speak to Monroe alive. On the phone, she ended their last conversation by saying, Say goodbye to Pat [Lawfords wife]. Say goodbye to the president. And say goodbye to yourself because youre a nice guy.In the early morning hours of August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroes psychiatrist Dr. Ralph Greenson and personal physician Dr. Hyman Engelberg were summoned to the actresss Los Angeles bungalow at 12305 Fifth Helena Drive.Wikimedia CommonsMarilyn Monroes Los Angeles home where her body was found in 1962.Monroes longtime housekeeper Eunice Murray made the initial, panicked calls to the stars doctors after waking up at 3 a.m. and finding the light still on in Monroes bedroom. She knocked to check if everything was alright but a locked door and no response caused her concern.Wikimedia CommonsGreenson managed to reach his client by breaking through the bedroom window. He found Monroe naked in bed a telephone clutched tightly in her hand. The psychiatrist understood rather quickly that everyone needed to face facts. He calmly notified Engelberg on the other side of the door. She appears to be dead, said Greenson.Engelberg pronounced Marilyn Monroe dead at around 4.30 AM and contacted the police. Meanwhile, one of her lawyers, Milton Mickey Rudin, rushed over and handled preliminary matters on the phone. Her publicist Arthur Jacobs, who was at the Hollywood Bowl for a concert, hurried over.E. Murray/Fox Photos/Getty ImagesThe room where Marilyn Monroe died.Jacobs refused to recount the night of Marilyn Monroes death ever since. He explained that the scene in Monroes bedroom was too horrible to talk about years later. The myriad of prescription pills that littered her nightstand certainly connoted suicide but the lingering question of what really caused Marilyn Monroes death never went away. How Did Marilyn Monroe Die?By dawn, the bungalows yard was riddled with reporters. Monroes body was transported to the Los Angeles County coroners office to undergo an autopsy. Performed that same day, the toxicology results showed her blood contained high levels of chloral hydrate when Marilyn Monroe died, likely from sleeping pills and the barbiturate Nembutal.Robert W. Kelley/The LIFE Picture Collection/Getty ImagesIn her New York apartment, Marilyn Monroe pours a drink from a decanter as her then-husband, playwright Arthur Miller, sits in the background.Nonetheless, the coroner deemed Monroes death a probable suicide in the official death certificate. He concluded that the levels of chloral hydrate were so high that the sleeping pills must have been ingested within a very short time within about one minute. The authorities, meanwhile, stated in their police report that Marilyn Monroes death might have been accidental. Her friends, however, couldnt believe the vivacious star had died so suddenly.Friends Respond To Marilyn Monroes DeathKeystone/Getty ImagesMedical attendants remove the body of Marilyn Monroe from her home.Upon hearing the news of Monroes death, actress Sophia Loren broke down crying. Author Truman Capote, meanwhile, recounted his friendship with the actress in a letter from Spain. It painted a much rosier picture than one of bleak hopelessness patched up by pills and booze binges.Cannot believe that Marilyn M. is dead, he wrote. She was such a good-hearted girl, so pure really, so much on the side of the angels. Poor little baby.Getty ImagesMarilyn Monroe, playing Ellen Arden, swims naked in Somethings Got To Give. The movie was never completed due to Monroes sudden death during production.Numerous friends of Monroes soon began claiming that the official report of her death was a lie and that there had been a glaring effort to cover up her murder from the public.Bacon recalled seeing her just a few days prior and recalled that she was in tremendous spirits. She wasnt the least bit depressed, he said. She was talking about going to Mexico.Another friend, Pat Newcomb, said he had seen Monroe the night before her death when the two jovially made plans to go to the movies the next day. He said she was in perfect physical condition and was feeling great potentially because she had just rekindled an old flame with ex-husband Joe DiMaggio.Hulton-Deutsch Collection/CORBIS/Corbis/Getty ImagesMarilyn Monroe takes a break from filming. Unknown date. One of her associates bluntly asked, Does that sound like she was depressed about her career?Monroe had also just been rehired on Somethings Got To Give and left no suicide note. Marilyn Monroes autopsy report claimed countless pills caused her death, but no trace of the capsules was found in her stomach. Thomas Noguchi, junior medical examiner on the case, later even called for it to be reopened.Perhaps most suspicious was the fact that Monroes housekeeper was seen washing the dead starlets bedsheets in the middle of the night as police arrived at the bungalow.Apic/Getty ImagesMarilyn Monroes body at the morgue in Los Angeles for autopsy.Ominously, the deputy coroner who signed Marilyn Monroes death certificate said he did so under duress. Slowly but surely, people had had enough of the official story and countless reports and books spurred a new investigation in 1982.Though it concluded that the evidence reviewed fails to support any theory of criminal conduct, it plainly admitted that the investigation discovered some factual discrepancies and unanswered questions. The new investigation ultimately called her death a probable suicide. However, theorists believe Monroes personal affairs provide a wide range of potential homicide motives, some of which are rather considerable. What Caused Marilyn Monroes Death And Was There A Conspiracy Behind It?Perhaps the most famous conspiracy theory is that Robert Kennedy orchestrated Marilyn Monroes death. Popularized by actor Gianni Russo of Godfather fame, the motive was purportedly to shield John F. Kennedy from irrevocable character ruination should their affair ever see the light of day.Wikimedia CommonsMarilyn Monroe with John F. Kennedy (right) and Robert Kennedy during the iconic celebration for the president at which she sang to him. 1962.As her ex-boyfriend, Russo explained that the mob and Chicago crime boss Sam Giancana were after the actress in order to get to the president. The plan was to film the two and Robert Kennedy having a threesome, and blackmail the president into invading Cuba to return its casinos back to the mob. When Monroe learned of the plot, she threatened to report those involved to the media. Robert Kennedy then had her killed in order to squash the entire ordeal.Other theorists were more suspicious of Monroes money, and those in control of it, purposefully injecting her with barbiturates to get full access to the actresss funds.Regardless, most agree her death was likely achieved by a fatal injection supported by the lack of pill capsules in her body and a small, mysterious bruise on her lower body that was never explained.Bettmann/Getty ImagesMarilyn Monroe, visibly distressed, leaves a hospital while being hounded by the press in 1954.There was also the matter of her will and an untold amount of mysterious documents that were stuffed into shopping bags and removed by her business manager Inez Melson within 48 hours of Monroes death. This was all done while the police were taking statements. The actress will, meanwhile, was filed for probate on August 16 and established a trust of $100,000. This provided her mother, Gladys Pearl Baker, with an annual $5,000, the widow of her acting coach with $2,500 per year, $10,000 for her half-sister Berniece Baker Miracle, another $10,000 to her former secretary, and $5,000 to playwright Norman Rosten.Footage from Marilyn Monroes funeral. While none of these generous grants are out of the ordinary, one last item was rather curious. Monroe purportedly felt her New York psychiatrist, Dr. Marianne Kris who had forcefully incarcerated her in a padded cell in the Payne Whitney Clinic in 1961 deserved 25 percent of her estate. In the end, we may never know for certain how Marilyn Monroe died, but we do know that a bright, talented young woman accomplished her dreams, but died tragically as a result. After this look at the how Marilyn Monroe died, check out the most incredible Marilyn Monroe quotes. 11 Famous Unsolved Disappearances And The Baffling Stories Behind Them
The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System estimates that there are roughly 90,000 missing persons in the United States alone at any given time. While scientific advancements such as genealogy testing have solved many of these mysterious disappearances, many more remain unsolved and will likely remain so.Indeed, not all families will receive any semblance of closure. The family of Madeleine McCann, for example, has been searching for clues in their toddlers unsolved disappearance for over a decade. The lack of evidence in some of these missing persons cases not only hinders the investigation, but leaves a lot of room for conjecture, speculation, and conspiracy. The ominous disappearance of an Australian pilot in 1978 has led many to blame alien abduction. The most chilling unsolved disappearances below involve a broad range of shadowy entities, from the Italian Mafia to secretive Satanic worshippers, and they have implicated some of the worlds most powerful people. The Mysterious Disappearance Of Emanuela Orlandi In The VaticanPietro OrlandiA young Emanuela Orlandi, before she became one of the most famous missing persons cases in the world. On a sweltering summer evening in June 1983, 15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi disappeared from Vatican City in central Rome after attending a routine music lesson. The daughter of a prominent Vatican employee, Orlandi enjoyed the religious centers idyllic gardens and often ran into Pope John Paul II. Her brother Pietro recalled their city being more of a village, inhabited by a close-knit group of around six families. But Orlandis disappearance on June 22 of that year launched decades of kaleidoscopic conspiracy theories that include the Italian Mafia, Vatican Satanists, sex trafficking, and sacrifice. On the last day anyone saw her, Orlandi called her sister after her music class to tell her that a representative from Avon Cosmetics had offered her a job. When Orlandi failed to return home the following day, her parents called the teacher from her class and the police. Her mysterious disappearance was declared a missing person case that day.A witness initially reported seeing a girl matching Orlandis description entering a green BMW near the music school on the night of her disappearance, but that bit of information would lead nowhere.Shortly after this maddening detail surfaced, the Orlandis received an ominous phone call promising to return the girl if the Vatican released Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish national who was languishing in prison for having attempted to assassinate the pope two years earlier. Unfortunately, that development proved fruitless as well.It has since been suggested that the Rome-based crime syndicate Banda della Magliana kidnapped Orlandi to force the Vatican to pay them back for an outstanding loan. The girlfriend of the leader of that criminal organization, Enrico De Pedis, later claimed that De Pedis told her that Orlandi was indeed kidnapped and killed.Pietro OrlandiOrlandis family was very close with Pope John Paul II.The most hair-raising theories, however, claim that the Vatican, local police, and high-profile lawmakers kidnapped Orlandi and forced her into sexual servitude. At least, this is what the Vaticans chief exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth believes. Amorth was appointed by Pope John Paul II himself. This was a crime with a sexual motive, Amorth insisted. Parties were organized, with a Vatican gendarme acting as the recruiter of the girls. The network involved diplomatic personnel from a foreign embassy to the Holy See. I believe Emanuela ended up as a victim of this circle. In 2019, a promising tip suggested that Orlandi had been buried in a Vatican tomb. Tragically, this tip too yielded no results. Her family has organized demonstrations in recent years, hoping to spur a renewed investigation into her unsolved disappearance, but to no avail.Madeleine McCann, The Most Heavily Reported Missing Person Case In Modern HistoryCathal McNaughton, PA Images/Getty ImagesWhen it was reported that Madeleine McCann was in Morocco, a local search party was launched but no answers were found. The mysterious disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007 continues to baffle investigators to this day. The British three-year-old vanished while on vacation with her family in Portugal, and is now considered the most heavily reported missing person case in modern history and for good reason. The story of McCanns mysterious disappearance began on the night of May 3, 2007, at a resort in Praia da Luz (Beach Of Light) in Portugal. Kate and Gerry McCann left Madeleine and her two twin siblings asleep in their rental apartment at the resort, which was on the ground floor, and went to have dinner with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant. The adults returned two hours later at 10 p.m. to find their eldest child gone. Later, the McCanns remembered how their daughter had asked them over breakfast the morning of her mysterious disappearance: Why didnt you come when [my brother] and I cried last night? The devastated parents were then led to believe that someone uninvited may have been in their apartment and maybe even more than once.MAURIX/Gamma-Rapho/Getty ImagesKate and Gerry McCann attended Pope Benedict XVIs weekly audience at the Vatican, where the pope blessed a photo of Madeleine for them. One of the first promising suspects in McCanns missing person case was 33-year-old Robert Murat. The British-Portuguese real estate consultant not only lived nearby, but a man matching his description was seen around 9:15 p.m. on the night of McCanns disappearance walking toward his home carrying a child. But the Portuguese police cleared him when they found no evidence of his involvement with the children. Next, the McCanns themselves were added to the list of suspects. Some investigators posited that Madeleine McCann actually died in the Praia da Luz apartment and that her parents fabricated this narrative of child abduction in order to cover it up. This theory seemed to hold some water, considering the fact that dogs that were brought on the scene seemed curiously alert inside the apartment and around the McCann family car. Alas, no body was ever found. The grieving parents were officially removed as suspects in 2008, and the missing person case grew to become an unprecedented media phenomenon in the United Kingdom.Ever since a 2009 report found that the region of Portugal in which McCann went missing was awash with pedophiles, many have posited that the toddler was abducted by local sex traffickers. There are 38 known sex offenders in the Algarve, the report went on, the area is a magnet for pedophiles. In an ominous turn of events, former M.P. Sir Clement Freud, who had a home nearby and knew the McCanns, was later outed as a pedophile. From later claims that Hillary Clintons campaign adviser John Podesta and his brother snatched the girl from her home to theories she simply walked off, Madeleine McCanns mysterious disappearance has never been solved. Whether by accidental death, sex trafficking, or abduction, McCanns remains one of the strangest missing persons cases in modern history. The post 11 Famous Unsolved Disappearances And The Baffling Stories Behind Them appeared first on All That's Interesting.

And on Mothers Day in 2017, the 57-year-old was shot and killed outside her home. The Abduction Of Miriam Rodrguezs DaughterFor Miriam Elizabeth Rodrguez Martnez, everything changed on Jan. 23, 2014. That day, as her 20-year-old daughter Karen Alejandra Salinas Rodrguez drove through San Fernando, two trucks pulled up beside her. Armed men forced their way into her car and then drove off with her. Rodrguez and her family spent the next several weeks trying to bring Karen home. They knew that she had been taken by members of the Zetas cartel an offshoot of the Gulf Cartel who were known to kidnap innocent people and use their ransoms to fund cartel operations. As The New York Times reports, Karens loved ones tried to follow all of the cartels instructions. Inundated with a barrage of phone calls, threats, and demands, they took out a loan to pay Karens ransom and left a bag of money at a drop-off point. Still, Karen didnt come home. With no other options, Miriam Rodrguez asked to meet with a cartel member. To her surprise, one agreed. Though he told her that he didnt know where Karen was, he offered to help find her for $2,000. Rodrguez paid the fee, which led nowhere. But she also learned the young mans name: Sama. With this information in hand, Rodrguez had found her first clue. She told her surviving daughter that she believed that Karen was dead, but that she would not rest until she hunted down Karens kidnappers.A Mothers Quest For JusticeSlowly, carefully, Miriam Rodrguez started to gather clues about her daughters kidnappers. After she found Sama on Facebook, she identified one of his friends by her ice cream store uniform and spent hours waiting outside the shop until he appeared. Then, she followed him.Rodrguez found out where Sama lived, but she still needed more information. In order to sneak around his neighborhood undetected, she dyed her hair red, donned an old uniform, and spoke to his neighbors under the guise of conducting a poll. And after being ignored by the authorities, Rodrguez finally found an ally within the federal police who was willing to help her. TwitterMiriam Rodrguez changed her appearance in order to find out more about her daughters kidnappers without attracting their attention. When she pulled her files onto the table, I had never seen anything like it, the anonymous police commander told The New York Times. The details and information gathered by this woman, working all alone, were incredible.Though Sama escaped arrest the first time, the police were able to eventually detain him. Sama gave the police names of other cartel members, who shed even more light on Karens abduction. One even agreed to take the police to the ranch where Karen had been killed. At the ranch, Miriam Rodrguez found Karens scarf, a cushion from her truck, and one of her femur bones. Then, she renewed her search to find Karens killers. She told us that she was incomplete, that although she had found her daughter, nothing would ever return to normal for her, a friend of Rodrguezs told the BBC.Miriam Rodrguezs Vigilante WorkIn all, Miriam Rodrguez would hunt down 10 cartel members who had played a role in her daughters kidnapping. Many had left the cartel and attempted to start over as born-again Christians or flower vendors, but Rodrguez had little sympathy for them.Where was his compassion when they killed my daughter? she said after one of the cartel members was arrested in a chapel, eliciting protests from the congregation. Indeed, Rodrguez made waves in San Fernando. Not only was she going toe-to-toe with a powerful enemy, but Rodrguez was also challenging a way of life. She seemed to recognize the danger of her work, and remarked that she had no fear of death.I dont care if they kill me, Rodrguez told a friend, according to The New York Times. I died the day they killed my daughter. I want to end this. Im going to take out the people who hurt my daughter and they can do whatever they want to me.Tragically, her words proved prophetic. How Miriam Rodrguez Was Killed By Cartel MembersTwitterMiriam Rodrguez became an activist for families whose loved ones had disappeared in Mexico. In March 2017, 29 inmates dug a tunnel and escaped from a penitentiary in Ciudad Victoria, where Karens abductors had been imprisoned. Miriam Rodrguez asked for police protection, and local police agreed to send patrols, according to The Guardian. But on May 10, the day when Mexico celebrates Mothers Day, the danger inherent in Rodrguezs work finally caught up to her. The 57-year-old was hobbling up to her front door on crutches shed recently broken her foot chasing after a suspect when a white Nissan driven by the escaped inmates pulled up in front of her house. They shot Rodrguez about a dozen times, then drove off. Her husband found her sprawled in their driveway, her hand in her purse, where she kept her pistol. Her death enraged people across the state. The governor, Francisco Javier Garca Cabeza de Vaca, wrote on Twitter: The government of Tamaulipas will not allow the death of Miriam Rodrguez to turn into yet another statistic. #NoToImpunity. But though the government did arrest two of Rodrguezs killers a third was killed in a gunfight her murder unraveled much of Rodrguezs work. Her son had taken over the collective Rodrguez had started, Colectivo de Desaparecidos de San Fernando (San Fernando Collective for the Disappeared) but the organization slowly collapsed following her death.Tragically, Miriam Rodrguezs story is hardly unique. The BBC reports that approximately 100,000 people have disappeared in Mexico since 2007 when the then-Mexican president declared a war on drugs.ULISES RUIZ/AFP via Getty ImagesTwo women embrace during the International Day of the Disappeared in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, on August 30, 2022.When Karen became one of the tens of thousands of innocent people abducted by the cartels, her mother sprang into action. She paid for it with her life, but Miriam Rodrguez found justice for her daughter. Not everyone got along with her, a state official told The New York Times. But you respected her mission. After reading about Miriam Rodrguez and her relentless hunt for justice, discover the story of Gary Plauch, who killed his sons kidnapper on live television. Property Development In Scotland Turned Up An Ancient Roman Fortlet Sitting Right Beneath The Gardens Of Neighboring Houses
GUARD Archaeology LtdThe ancient stone foundation uncovered in the back garden of a suburban home in Bearsden, Scotland. In 2017, an archaeological dig ahead of a construction project in Bearsden, Scotland revealed a stone foundation. After Historic Environment Scotland commissioned further excavations, researchers have identified this discovery as an ancient Roman fortlet that was part of the Antonine Wall. This structure was one in a series of defensive forts that studded the barrier, which separated northern Britain from the area under Roman control. The Antonine Wall was only used for about 20 years in the second century C.E., however, as soldiers then withdrew south to the previous frontier boundary at Hadrians Wall. Now, this newly discovered fortlet is revealing valuable information about this short-lived period in the history of Roman Britain. The Discovery Of An Ancient Roman Fortlet In ScotlandBefore construction could commence in Bearsden, the East Dunbartonshire Council required a preventive excavation to ensure the protection of any ancient remains that may be hiding beneath the ground. When archaeologists struck a stone foundation, they investigated further, ultimately digging up the gardens of three adjacent residences along Boclair Road.In addition to the foundation, researchers uncovered a manmade ditch running parallel to the stones that contained deposits of peat, wood, and vegetation. They also found more stone structures that are likely fragments of the Antonine Wall as well as two shards of Roman pottery.GUARD Archaeology LtdPieces of wood found in a ditch at the excavation site dated back more than 1,800 years. The wood discovered in the ditch was radiocarbon dated to between 127 and 247 C.E. Given that construction on the Antonine Wall began in 142 C.E., experts are confident that these remains were part of this ancient barrier. As lead archaeologist Maureen Kilpatrick noted in a study published in Archaeology Reports Online, Given their location and date, the archaeological remains discovered in the back gardens of Boclair Road are related to the Antonine Wall, and it would therefore seem that the stone base supported a turf wall and the ditch was a section of the perimeter ditch around a hitherto unknown Roman fortlet.Very little remains of the Antonine Wall today, so this unexpected discovery is a rare addition to what historians know about the expansion and ultimately, the fall of the Roman Empire in Britain. The History Of The Roman Empires Antonine WallUnlike Hadrians Wall, which was made primarily of stone, the Antonine Wall consisted of stone foundations with turf piled on top along with a timber palisade. It was studded with defensive forts and smaller fortlets, like the one that would have stood at the newly uncovered site.In 142 C.E., near the end of the Pax Romana, Emperor Antoninus Pius ordered the Roman Army to construct the barrier from the mouth of the River Clyde, just north of Glasgow, to the Firth of Forth, north of Edinburgh. The wall spanned the width of the island, stretching nearly 40 miles, and it marked the northernmost reaches of the Roman Empire.Eduardo Prez-Fernndez/GUARD Archaeology LtdAn artists rendering of what the Roman fortlet may have looked like.So far, 17 forts and approximately 17 additional fortlets have been identified along the Antonine Wall. Soldiers would have been stationed in these structures to defend Roman territory from raids by northern tribes. A road called the Military Way ran near the wall so that troops and goods could be transported easily between forts.Kilpatrick noted that the fortlet found in the gardens of Boclair Road lay on an area of high ground right next to the Antonine Wall. It had commanding views over the landscape, particularly to the north, which was beyond Roman control, and was also intervisible with the larger Roman fort at Bearsden, which lay close by to the west on lower-lying ground. This suggests that the fortlet was an integral part of the Roman Wall defenses. But the Romans may have been too ambitious with the expansion of their empire. The Scottish tribes regularly attacked the Antonine Wall, and its turf and timber were more difficult to maintain than the stone of Hadrians Wall. In the 160s C.E., just 20 years after the barrier was built, it was abandoned, and troops fell back to Hadrians Wall. The Antonine Wall eroded over the centuries, and only a few signs of its existence mostly ditches through the Scottish countryside are visible today. As such, every small remnant of the ancient structure thats revealed adds to the rich history of the region. As Kilpatrick put it, The work within the three gardens in Bearsden has revealed how important the planning process is to archaeological investigation and the discovery of new sites. After reading about the Roman fortlet uncovered in Scotland, learn about the Picts, the mysterious residents of ancient Scotland. Then, go inside the story of Queen Boudica, the Celtic ruler who sought revenge against the Romans. The post Property Development In Scotland Turned Up An Ancient Roman Fortlet Sitting Right Beneath The Gardens Of Neighboring Houses appeared first on All That's Interesting.

Inside The Death Of Southern Rock Legend Ronnie Van Zant In The Fiery Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash
Tom Hill/Getty ImagesRonnie Van Zant, a little over a year before the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash that killed him and several members of his band.Ronnie Van Zant always had a feeling that he would die young. The Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman mentioned his premonition to multiple people, even telling a bandmate in Tokyo that he wouldnt live to see 30. Then, 87 days before his 30th birthday, Van Zant died in a shocking plane crash.Up until that point, however, Van Zant and his bandmates seemed to be at the peak of greatness, releasing smash hits like Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama. And by the time Van Zant and the rest of Lynyrd Skynyrd boarded the bands plane on Oct. 20, 1977, they were fresh off the release of their fifth album. But triumph turned to tragedy on that October night when the bands plane ran into engine trouble over Mississippi. The aircrafts tragic crash would end the life of Ronnie Van Zant and several others on board but, against all odds, Lynyrd Skynyrd would survive. The Rise Of Ronnie Van Zant And Lynyrd SkynyrdBorn on January 15, 1948, in Jacksonville, Florida, Ronald Wayne Van Zant didnt drift toward life as a musician right away. According to the official Lynyrd Skynyrd website, his first passions were fishing and playing baseball.I went as far as playing American Legion ball, Ronnie Van Zant said, according to the site. The next step would have been AA. I played center field. I had the highest batting average in the league one year and a good arm. Youve got to have a good arm to play outfield. But Van Zants love of baseball ended up leading him somewhere else to music. According to the Lynyrd Skynyrd documentary If I Leave Here Tomorrow: A Film, Van Zant hit his future drummer, Bob Burns, with a line drive during a high school baseball game.I think its funny as hell! Van Zant allegedly told Burns friend, future Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington. Burns, for his part, recalled that Van Zants line drive caught me behind the shoulder blades and took out every breath I ever had my whole life.Burns was bruised, but his pride wasnt, and the three started jamming together. They soon recruited guitarist Allen Collins and, in 1964, dubbed their band My Backyard. My Backyard became Wildcats, the Sons of Satan, Conqueror Worm, the Pretty Ones, and the One Percent. Then, in 1969, it finally became Lynyrd Skynyrd. If I Leave Here Tomorrow: A Film explains that the bands name came from two places: Rossingtons high school coach, Leonard Skinner, a stickler for enforcing the schools rules about hair length, and a lyric from Allen Shermans 1963 novelty song Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh.Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesLynyrd Skynyrd in 1975, from left to right: Ed King, Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle, Billy Powell, Allen Collins, Ronnie Van Zant, and Gary Rossington. From there, Lynyrd Skynyrd with the addition of members like Larry Junstrom and Leon Wilkeson on bass started its ascent to rock n roll greatness. Determined to whip his fellow members into shape, Van Zant brought the band to a Florida shack with no air conditioning called the Hell House and made them practice. Ronnie ran Skynyrd like Stalin ran Russia, Wilkeson told Spin.Fueled by drugs, ambition, and the frequent outbreak of violence, Lynyrd Skynyrd started to claw its way to the top. The band produced their debut album (Pronounced Lh-nrd Skin-nrd) in 1973 and soon caught the worlds attention with hits like Sweet Home Alabama. After releasing their fifth album, Street Survivors, on Oct. 17, 1977, Ronnie Van Zant and his band seemed unstoppable. But three days later, on October 20, a devastating plane crash would change everything. The Frontmans Death In The Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane CrashThe album cover for Lynyrd Skynyrds fifth album, which featured flames and Ronnie Van Zant with his eyes closed, was later changed because it was considered too evocative of the plane crash. On Oct. 20, 1977, the day of Lynyrd Skynyrds flight from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, almost everyone had a bad feeling about the plane. According to Rolling Stone, the bands manager Peter Rudge had bought the nearly 30-year-old Convair 240 out of necessity because the group caused too much trouble on commercial flights. But the band members didnt like it especially since one of the engines had caught on fire on October 18, at 12,000 feet. Our wives, everyone were afraid for us to get on this thing, but we didnt know any better, keyboardist Billy Powell told VH1s Behind the Music.Gary Rossington also remembered that Allen Collins didnt want to get on board, telling the Orlando Sentinel, [Collins] didnt want to get on that plane. He said, Im not gonna get on it because its not right.' But Rossington recalls a different reaction from Ronnie Van Zant, who seemed less perturbed than the others about their rickety plane. Ronnie said, Hey, if the Lord wants you to die on this plane, when its your time, its your time, Rossington said. Lets go, man. Weve got a gig to do.' The scene of the plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant and several other passengers on board. At 5:02 p.m., the plane took off in Greenville. The band relaxed, blasting music, playing poker, and enjoying the view. Van Zant, with a bad back, even lay on the floor as one of the backing vocalists gave him a massage. For almost two hours, they sailed through the sky. Then, the planes right engine failed. And, then, the left engine did, too. The passengers grew quiet as the pilot explained the situation and the plane began to plummet through the sky. But different members remember different things about Ronnie Van Zants final moments.Rolling Stone reports that the bands security chief, Gene Odom, woke Van Zant and strapped him into a seat. But drummer Artimus Pyle remembered Van Zant retrieving a pillow from the back of the plane and shaking his hand. Ronnie, Pyle said, knew that he was going to die.Indeed, as the plane sliced through a forest near Gillsburg, Mississippi, at 90 miles per hour, Ronnie Van Zant died instantly of blunt force trauma, months shy of his 30th birthday. Steve Gaines, the bands promising young guitarist, his sister Cassie Gaines, a backup vocalist, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray Jr., also perished. The others on board survived with critical injuries. And when reporters asked Powell soon after the crash if Lynyrd Skynyrd would continue to perform, the keyboardist tersely replied, I dont think so.The Rebirth Of Lynyrd SkynyrdIn the aftermath of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board found that the fatal crash had been due to fuel exhaustion as well as pilot error. But Ronnie Van Zants death, and the deaths of others on board, didnt spell the end of Lynyrd Skynyrd as Powell predicted. In 1987, the band reformed with many of its original members this time, with Van Zants younger brother Johnny singing lead vocals.I never thought I would be in Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Van Zant told USA Today. I remember seeing the band rehearse and play, and going, Wow, I want to do that one day and here I am!Having played in his brothers place for over three decades, Johnny Van Zant remarked: [W]e dont know what path Gods going to lead us down and what our mortality is, but Ive got a lot of things to live for.Today, Lynyrd Skynyrd is still rocking. Theyre older now Johnny Van Zant joked that fan appreciation had replaced sex and drugs but theyre still singing the songs that Ronnie Van Zant penned decades ago.In that way, Ronnie Van Zant lives on. He may have died young back in 1977, but his music, and his band, continue with a life of their own. After reading about Ronnie Van Zant and his shocking death in the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, see how musicians Patsy Cline and Buddy Holly met the similar fates. The post Inside The Death Of Southern Rock Legend Ronnie Van Zant In The Fiery Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash appeared first on All That's Interesting.

Inside Nikola Teslas Fascination With 3, 6, 9 And The Unusual Theories It Spawned
When youre a genius, you tend to notice things that others dont. Nikola Tesla did. He envisioned the potential of electricity far before his contemporaries. So, is it possible that Nikola Teslas 3 6 9 theory of the universe holds water? Or is it merely evidence of Teslas obsessive nature?Wikimedia CommonsNikola Teslas 3 6 9 theory is alleged to hold the key to the universe.Teslas 3 6 9 obsession began with his fixation on the number three and suggests that three, six, and nine could hold the key to the universe. The theory has been co-opted and expanded upon even today by people who hope to improve their lives by manifesting their desires through repeatedly writing them out.But understanding the theory requires understanding Nikola Tesla himself.Inside The Mind Of Nikola Tesla {"div_id":"nikola-tesla-balls-of-flame.gif.db5d3","plugin_url":"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/plugins\/gif-dog","attrs":{"src":"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nikola-tesla-balls-of-flame.gif","alt":"Nikola Tesla","width":"900","height":"1247","class":"size-full wp-image-319001 post-img-portrait"},"base_url":"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nikola-tesla-balls-of-flame.gif","base_dir":"\/vhosts\/all-that-is-interesting\/wordpress\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/nikola-tesla-balls-of-flame.gif"}Wikimedia CommonsNikola Tesla harnessed the power of electricity to wirelessly power light bulbs, an impressive feat in his day.Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, an ethnic Serb in todays Croatia. His mind distinguished him at a young age. Tesla recalled in his autobiography having out-of-body experiences as a child which cast him to new places, cities, and countries as dear to me as those in actual life and not a bit less intense in their manifestations.Tesla also had an eidetic photographic memory, which he used to craft his ideas and inventions in his head before setting out to create them in reality. When Tesla began putting his mind to the test as an adult, he noticed that he stood apart from his contemporaries. Most other inventors, he noted, lack patience. Tesla went on: They lack the willingness to work a thing out slowly and clearly and sharply in their mind we all make mistakes, and it is better to make them before we begin. The inventors introspective method worked well for him during his career. Although he was never wealthy, Tesla churned out an impressive number of inventions that have relevance today, including alternating current (AC) and the induction motor. His experiments also touched on ideas that were developed by others, like X-Rays, neon lights, and remote controls. In Teslas work, the inventor sought to discover and harness some of the worlds mysteries. He did this with electricity and he seemed to believe that he could do the same with the numbers three, six, and nine. Why Did Tesla Say That 3 6 9 Was The Key To The Universe?Wikimedia CommonsNikola Tesla was obsessed with the number three.Nikola Tesla is alleged to have stated: If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6, and 9, then you would have a key to the universe.Although its uncertain whether the great inventor actually uttered the famous quote, theres no question he was indeed obsessed by the numbers. What did they mean to him? Why did Tesla think that 3 6 9 were important? It has to do with complicated mathematics and human history. For example: doubling 1, then 2, and so on creates a pattern that excludes 3 6 and 9. Scientist Marko Rodin believes that 3 6 9, then, represents a flux field or a vector from the third to the fourth dimension. Threes also appear often in human history. Triangles have three sides as do pyramids. Trinities abound in human history, as in the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Tesla himself would point to the trifecta of energy, frequency, and vibration which he believed contained the secrets of the universe. In his life, Tesla manifested his obsession in numerous ways. He would walk three times around the block before entering the building. Tesla would wash his dishes with 18 napkins (18 is divisible by 9, 6, and 3). The inventor would also only stay in hotel rooms that had a room number divisible by three. At the end of his life, he bounced between cheap hotels. In the end, Nikola Tesla died in room #3327 of The New Yorker Hotel in January 1943.What Does Tesla Have To Do With The 3 6 9 Manifestation Method?Today, Teslas 3 6 9 theory has new life thanks to an unlikely source: Tik Tok. There, users seek to achieve their goals by using a simple method. They write down what they manifest like a promotion, for example three times in the morning, six times in the afternoon, and nine times in the evening. The belief is that this repetition will manifest what the person desires, in part because of the special nature of the numbers 3, 6, and 9.It may not be exactly what Nikola Teslas envisioned when he obsessed over the three magical numbers but its proof that the power of his ideas hasnt dimmed. After reading about Nikola Teslas 3 6 9 theory, enjoy these 22 fascinating facts about Facts. Or, delve into the strange mystery behind his rumored death beam. The post Inside Nikola Teslas Fascination With 3, 6, 9 And The Unusual Theories It Spawned appeared first on All That's Interesting.

11 Epic Stories Of Revenge From History That Will Make You Think Twice About Wronging Someone
Few kinds of tales are more dramatic than revenge stories and history is chock full of them.Theres the story of Diana the Bus Driver Hunter, who took matters into her own hands in response to the growing number of femicides in Mexico that went uninvestigated. Then theres the mass execution of Nazi prison guards at Dachau concentration camp by American soldiers who liberated the camp in 1945. Or theres the gruesome fate of Akku Yadav, who raped 200 women and was later beaten, stomped, and stabbed to death by a mob of his victims.Explore these and other revenge stories from history below, and learn what happens when people refuse to let their suffering go unanswered.Mariya Oktyabrskaya Plowed Through Nazis With A Tank To Avenge Her HusbandWikimedia CommonsAfter her husband was killed by the Nazis, Maria Oktyabrskaya bought a tank to avenge him.During World War II, an estimated 800,000 Russian women served in the Red Army and Mariya Oktyabrskaya was one of them. But more than a patriotic calling, Oktyabrskayas military service was the consequence of her husbands death at the hands of Nazis.Mariya Oktyabrskaya came from a Crimean peasant family, had a deep sense of loyalty to the USSR, and was a firm believer in communism. Her sense of duty arguably deepened after she married an army officer named Ilya Oktyabrskaya.Marry a serviceman, and you serve in the army, she once declared. When her husband was killed fighting against the Nazis in Kiev, instead of giving in to her grief, Oktyabrskaya found another way to cope: revenge. She sold all her belongings and bought a T-34 tank which she christened Fighting Girlfriend so she could kill the Nazi invaders. In order for her to make sure that she would be the one behind the wheel of the tank, Oktyabrskaya reportedly made her case to Joseph Stalin himself. In a letter to the Russian leader, Oktyabrskaya wrote: My husband was killed in action defending the motherland. I want revenge on the fascist dogs for his death and for the death of Soviet people tortured by the fascist barbarians.Wikimedia Commons/RIA Novosti Archive/Boris KudoyarovMariya Oktyabrskaya died while fighting in the Leningrad-Novgorod Offensive.Stalin no doubt aware of the propaganda value of such a request approved her plan and Oktyabrskaya underwent five months of training. Despite the support from Russias leader, Mariya Oktyabrskaya was still vastly outnumbered by her male compatriots who likely put little faith in her abilities. It didnt take long for her to prove herself, however. In her first tank battle in October 1943, Fighting Girlfriend was the first tank to breach enemy lines and Oktyabrskaya proceeded to wreak absolute havoc against German troops, crushing many under the treads of her T-34. A month later, she fearlessly jumped out of her tank to make needed repairs under heavy fire from the enemy, hopped back in, and got back into the fight. For Mariya Oktyabrskaya, the horrors of war only strengthened her resolve.Ive had my baptism by fire. I beat the bastards. Sometimes Im so angry I cant even breathe, she wrote in an emotional letter to her sister.Mariya Oktyabrskaya died fighting the Nazis a few months later in January 1944 during the Red Armys LeningradNovgorod Offensive.Joaquin Murrieta, The Mexican Robin Hood Who Inspired ZorroWikimedia CommonsAn illustration of Joaquin Murrieta, who formed a gang that robbed American miners. If youre familiar with the famous story of Zorro, the name Joaquin Murrieta might ring a bell. Indeed, Murrietas alter-ego might be more popular than the man himself but this true revenge story has certainly stood the test of time.Joaquin Murrieta was born in northwestern Mexico in the state of Sonora around 1829. During the California Gold Rush, Murrieta and his wife set up a small home in the hills of California and Murrieta spent his days panning for gold.By 1850, he was a successful prospector despite the competition from the growing number of Americans who had also traveled to the formerly Mexican territory. Inevitably, clashes soon erupted between the Mexican and American prospectors over the areas gold deposits. During one particularly brutal conflict, Murrietas wife was raped and murdered right in front of him.Even after the now-widowed Murrieta quit mining and settled into life as a card dealer, he continued to endure the often-violent racism of white men. When a mob accused him of stealing a horse that Murrieta had borrowed from his half-sibling, they lynched both Murrieta and Murrietas brother for the alleged offense. The ordeal killed his brother but Joaquin Murrieta survived and the incident was the final straw that launched Joaquin Murrieta on the path of revenge. He hunted down his brothers killers and murdered them one by one while recruiting other Mexican fighters to form a gang of vigilantes to protect the Mexican community from the violence perpetrated by the Americans.Exhibitors Herald/Wikimedia CommonsJoaquin Murrietas revenge story inspired the creation of Zorro. One of his recruits was a Mexican army veteran named Three-Fingered Jack who lost two fingers in a firefight during the Mexican-American War. Together, they targeted American miners, rounding them up like cattle before murdering them and plundering their gold.Word soon got out that Murrietas gang were pillaging American miners and giving the loot to the Mexican families, and Joaquin Murrieta quickly became a local legend. His bandits became so feared that the government finally put a bounty on Murrietas head. He was later killed in a gunfight between his gang and a group of California rangers led by military veteran Harry Love.Nevertheless, Murrietas Robin Hood reputation lived on. His life story was picked up by pulp writer Johnston McCulley, who introduced the American public to the character Zorro, which was loosely based off Joaquin Murrieta. McCulleys first Zorro book, The Curse of Capistrano, was widely successful and helped to solidified Murrietas tale of revenge. The post 11 Epic Stories Of Revenge From History That Will Make You Think Twice About Wronging Someone appeared first on All That's Interesting.
