At first, Willow was extremely timid, hissing whenever Chloe entered the room. "She refused to leave her hiding spot while I was in there for the first week."Then, one day, her eyes softened, and midway through a hiss, she let out a tiny meow. "I think that was the moment we both realized she knew she was safe." ChloeLittle by little, Willow began to come out of her shell. She showed interest in toys and revealed her affectionate side. She worked up the courage to approach Chloe for pets, only to get startled and retreat behind the toilet. "But she kept coming back out. She was so scared, but she wanted love so badly."Because her injured leg couldn't be saved, the decision was made to amputate it, giving her the best chance at a happy, pain-free life. ChloeWillow attempted to walk almost immediately after surgery. She was wobbly at first, but incredibly determined. Within days, she began to play, batting at a feather wand while lying down. Her confidence grew, and she adapted to life on three legs with remarkable resilience.Two weeks later, she was walking and exploring her surroundings like a champ. ChloeWith each passing day, Willow's fear faded, replaced by comfort and trust in Chloe. "When I first got her, she was so paralyzed by fear and pain that she basically had no personality. She didn't even know how to play.""Now, she's a completely different cat. She's grown, gained weight, and no longer scarfs down her food in minutes." Little Wanderers NYCHe was in rough shape. His coat was caked with dirt and oil, and several of his teeth were broken or missing. He was battling worms, fleas, and ear infections. His left front leg was severely injured. "But there was hope at the end of this dark cloud."Veterinarians immediately got to work, carefully cleaning his wounds, treating his infections, and providing medication along with supportive care. Little Wanderers NYCEven after finishing two bowls of food, Henry would wait eagerly for his caretaker, asking for more. He was a diamond in the rough, with round cheeks and kind, friendly eyes.To give him the best quality of life, he underwent surgery to remove his damaged leg. Around that time, Colleen came across his story on social media and felt an instant connection. Colleen"I believe it was fate. Cats vomit. Its one of the less glamorous facts of life with a feline, and most cat owners have cleaned up more than their fair share of it. But when its happening consistently after meals, it stops feeling like a quirk and starts feeling like a problem worth actually understanding.Before assuming the worst, it helps to know that vomiting is whats called a non-specific sign, meaning it can be caused by a long list of things ranging from completely harmless to genuinely serious. Its also worth knowing that vomiting can look similar to regurgitation and coughing, which have different causes entirely. True vomiting involves abdominal contractions and brings up stomach contents. If youre unsure what youre seeing, a video to show your vet is worth more than a description.Here are the eight most common reasons a cat throws up after eating, what you can do about each one, and when to worry.Eating too fastThis is the most common culprit and the easiest to fix. Cats that wolf down their food also swallow air, and the combination of speed and air can trigger vomiting shortly after the bowl is empty. The fix is slowing them down: smaller, more frequent meals help, as does a slow-feeder bowl designed to make cats work a little harder for each bite.Image Credit: Kginger, ShutterstockEating too muchClosely related to eating too fast, but the mechanism is slightly different. A cat that eats beyond what their stomach can comfortably hold will simply bring the excess back up. This is especially common in multi-cat households, where one cat eats competitively out of anxiety that the other will take their food. Separate feeding stations and portion control are the straightforward solutions here.Food intolerance or allergyCats can react poorly to certain ingredients, most often a specific protein like chicken or beef, though additives and preservatives in some dry foods can also be a factor. If the vomiting started around the time of a diet change, or if your cat got into something they shouldnt have, this is worth considering. Switching foods isnt always straightforward, though. There are many options, including gastrointestinal and hypoallergenic diets, and a vet can help you navigate which direction makes sense rather than guessing through trial and error.Image Credit: AlexanderDubrovsk, ShutterstockHairballsMore than a few hairballs per month is considered on the higher end and can contribute to regular vomiting. A poor grooming routine or some underlying stomach issue is often behind frequent hairball problems, rather than hairballs being the root cause in themselves. Regular brushing reduces the amount of hair swallowed, and hairball-reduction diets can help things pass more smoothly. If its a recurring issue, a vet should take a look.StressStress has well-documented effects on the digestive system in both cats and people, reducing blood supply to the stomach and disrupting normal function. Cats are surprisingly sensitive to changes in their environment. Moving house, a new pet, a new baby, even a moved litter box or a missed feeding time can be enough to cause stress-related vomiting in some cats. If the vomiting coincides with a change in routine or environment, stress is a reasonable suspect. Identifying and eliminating the trigger, where possible, is the first step, though cats with more persistent anxiety may benefit from medication.Stressed cat who is hiding. Photo by ShutterstockStomach conditionsInflammatory bowel disease, gastritis, bacterial infections, and stomach parasites can all cause vomiting, typically alongside other signs like diarrhea, constipation, or frequent trips to the litter box. These need a proper vet workup to diagnose, rather than anything you can reasonably assess at home.Gastrointestinal blockageIf a cat swallows a toy, a piece of string, or another small object, it can lodge in the stomach or intestine and prevent digestion from progressing normally. Vomiting is one sign, but others include loss of appetite, passing small or loose stools, abdominal pain, and lethargy. This one is an emergency. If you suspect a blockage, the vet visit shouldnt wait.Metabolic diseaseKidney disease, liver disease, and an overactive thyroid are all common in cats and can all cause nausea and vomiting. These conditions typically come with other signs too: weight loss, increased thirst, appetite changes, behavioral shifts, or lethargy. But if its happening regularly, if your cat seems unwell in other ways, or if the vomiting persists for more than 48 hours, its time to call the vet. The same goes for any of the more serious signs listed above, particularly anything that looks like a potential blockage.Most of the time, cat vomiting after meals has a straightforward explanation and a manageable fix. We all know that beauty is only skin deep, and that scars always tell a story, and this is one cat with a beautiful soul and one heck of a story to tell.Stanley, a young ginger-and-white domestic shorthair, was brought into a municipal animal shelter by animal control and transferred for more intensive care at the South Carolina Cat Project earlier this year after surviving severe abuse and neglect, leaving him with painful and infected chemical burns. The trauma to his face, ears, nose, and eyelids was so extensive that his survival could not be guaranteed. In order to save his life, the veterinary team performed several surgeries, including bilateral partial pinna (ear) amputation, rhinoplasty to reconstruct and stabilize his nasal tissue after it had been significantly destroyed by the invasive burns.Image Credit: South Carolina Community Cat ProjectFollowing the gruelling procedures, Stanley required months of intensive wound care and medical management, involving tissue debridement, protective treatments to encourage skin growth, and a vast array of surgical collars to prevent him from disrupting the delicate healing process.Under the care of his foster mom, Brianna, Stanleys progress was closely monitored by a team of veterinary professionals to ensure his recovery was proceeding safely, smoothly, and free from pain. His transformation, both physically and emotionally, has been remarkable. Over several months, the swelling and inflammation slowly resolved, his wounds closed, replaced by healthy new skin, and his playful personality emerged. No longer the timid, mistreated kitty who first came through this cat rescues doors, Stanley has shown himself to be just as silly, spirited, and rascally as any young cat should be, particularly if there is food nearby!As youll no doubt guess from his appearance, Stanleys eyelids continue to be of some concern, and there is a chance he may still require further reconstructive surgery to ensure he can blink comfortably and protect his eyes long term, but for now, he is living large, showing affection towards the people and cats that surround him. And proving that you dont need a perfect appearance to become famous, Stanleys journey has been followed by thousands of adoring fans worldwide, helping raise awareness about the horrors of animal abuse and the incredible resilience shown by its innocent victims. Thank you KimDear Kim,It is understandable to feel concerned when a cats routine changes, especially when they are living with feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV. Many FIV-positive cats live long and comfortable lives, but their immune system is a bit like a shield with small gaps in it. Because of this, infections that might be mild in other cats, particularly eye or respiratory infections, can sometimes linger or recur. Increased sleeping, combined with tearing and scabbing around one eye, can indicate that the eye is irritated or infected again, or that there may be inflammation of the conjunctiva or cornea. Cats often rest more when they are not feeling well, much like people who prefer to stay in bed during a cold.Because eye disease can progress quickly in cats, especially if there is a corneal ulcer or deeper infection, it would be wise to have Oreo examined by a veterinarian rather than restarting old eye drops. Different eye problems require very different medications, and some drops that are safe for one condition can worsen another.
