ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMThe Story Of Michael Gacy, The Only Son Of The Killer Clown John Wayne GacyMarlynn Myers, with either Michael Gacy or Christine Gacy (accounts vary), and John Wayne Gacy in the late 1960s.One of John Wayne Gacys children, Michael Gacy was just two years old when his father was first arrested for sexually assaulting a minor and sentenced to 10 years in prison. John only served 18 months, but his wife and children had abandoned him by the time he got out. Then, his crimes escalated. And when he was arrested again in 1978, his story transfixed and horrified an entire nation as details of his deeds kept flooding the nightly news. He had slaughtered at least 33 people, including children, many of whom hed buried in the crawlspace of his house. But while John Wayne Gacy was branded a monster, convicted, and sent to prison, Michael Gacy remained an elusive figure.Michael Gacy had luckily escaped from his fathers house by the time the gruesome murders began. As chronicled in Netflixs documentary The John Wayne Gacy Tapes, however, he briefly lived with this burgeoning psychopath as a father.Nevertheless, Michael has never once spoken about his father publicly and is thought to have changed his name entirely in the aftermath of John Wayne Gacys grisly crimes coming to light.Michael Gacys Early Life Under John Wayne Gacys RoofMichael Gacy was born in 1966 in Waterloo, Iowa to Marlynn Myers and John Wayne Gacy who was already beginning to delve into some macabre activities.Public DomainJohn Wayne Gacys 1978 mugshot. But in the beginning, Myers had little reason to suspect her husband of any wrongdoing. According to Newsweek, the pair met as colleagues at the Dunn-Bus Shoe Company store in Springfield, Illinois, in 1964 and started dating shortly after. Gacy was so charming that Myers happily accepted his marriage proposal six months later. However, his pleasant outward demeanor only served as a facade for childhood traumas that spawned masochistic tendencies. John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, and had been physically abused and bullied by his alcoholic father and sexually molested by a family friend of his parents.Gacy had even suffered from a congenital heart condition at 11 years old that saw him grow up overweight. He was terrified of coming out as gay and moved to Las Vegas as an adult. Gacy briefly worked as a mortuary assistant and once slept in a coffin beside a dead child. He met Myers after moving to Springfield at 22.They tied the knot in September and moved to Waterloo where Gacy managed three Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants owned by his father-in-law. Their pride and joy, Michael Gacy, was followed by a daughter, Christine Gacy, in 1967. Gacy likened this happy period to being in church all the time. But just five years later, he murdered a teenager and never turned back. How Michael Gacy Escaped His Fathers CrimesJohn Wayne Gacys newfound status as a family man had earned him an apology from his father, who was relieved Gacy had chosen a heteronormative lifestyle. But Gacy was restless, and he joined the local chapter of the United States Junior Council, known as the Waterloo Jaycees, with whom he did drugs and invited teenagers to drink and play pool.Cook County Circuit CourtJohn Wayne Gacy had a tiki bar in his home where he and his Jaycee peers drank, did drugs, and entertained young boys.Michael Gacy was one year old when his father molested the 15-year-old son of a fellow Jaycee in August 1967. Gacy was indicted on one count of sodomy on May 10, 1968, and arrested three months later for intimidating the boy not to testify. Gacy pleaded guilty on November 7 and faced 10 years in prison. When he was convicted on Dec. 3, 1968, Myers petitioned for a divorce that very day. Michael Gacy was only three years old when it was finalized on Sept. 18, 1969, and Myers won sole custody over her children and the house. I enjoyed the first years of my married life, I was really wrapped into it, I just had such a nice warm feeling and I was so happy with [my wife], John Wayne Gacy said, according to The Daily Mail. I had a wife, I had two children. I had a business. I had wealth. Why in the fuck did I go out and get myself involved with a kid? While he didnt know it yet, Michael Gacy was now fatherless despite Gacy being paroled in 1970. But Myers and her children would never see John Wayne Gacy again. Any trail of Michael Gacy appeared to have publicly ended here, with the only renewed interest in his life being spurred by his fathers gruesome murders. Those only began after Gacy moved into 8213 West Summerdale Avenue in Chicago in 1971.Gacy established himself in the area by founding his own construction business and rekindling a relationship with childhood friend Carole Hoff. By the time they got married in June 1972, he had already lured 16-year-old Timothy McCoy into their house and stabbed him to death and shoved his body in the crawlspace below. The Crimes Of The Killer Clown Come To LightWhile Gacy appeared normal and even performed as Pogo the Clown for kids, Hoff found photos of nude men in their home. She was relieved by Gacys answer that he was bisexual, but divorced him in 1976 after he became physical during an argument. Until 1978, Gacy continued raping, torturing, and killing dozens of young men and boys.Bettmann/Getty ImagesPolice searching John Wayne Gacys house, which yielded the human remains of 29 people. He was only caught after luring high school sophomore Robert Piest to his house on Dec. 11, 1978, under the guise of a summer contracting job. Piests mother filed a missing persons report and informed police her son had been talking to the owner of PDM Contractors, Gacys company, leading to a search of his property. The killer ultimately confessed to murdering dozens of people on Dec. 22, leading to the disturbing discovery of 29 bodies in his crawlspace. In all, Gacy murdered 33 victims, and he spent 14 years on death row before being executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1994. As for John Wayne Gacys children, it remains unknown what they made of their lives. Where Are John Wayne Gacys Children Today? The name Gacy has been buried, John Wayne Gacys sister, Karen, told Oprah during a 2010 interview, adding that she herself has never had contact with Michael Gacy or his sister Christine.I tried sending gifts to the children. Everything was returned, she said. I often wonder about them, but if [his first wife] wants a private life. I think shes owed that. I think the children are owed that.Carole Hoff has never said a public word about her ex-husband, save for remarking on his low libido and the curious stench that had once emanated from their crawlspace. Marlynn Myers, meanwhile, said in 1979 that she remarried. In the end, Michael Gacy was fortunate not to live in his fathers house of horrors, in the first place.Perhaps vanishing into obscurity, was the smartest thing he couldve done as he remains irrevocably tied to one of the most disturbing serial killers in American history. After learning about Michael Gacy, take a insideJohn Wayne Gacys house where he hid his victims bodies. ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMHow Melvin Ignatow Got Away With Murder Before Eventually Being Killed By KarmaMel Ignatow and Brenda Schaefer. On Sept. 25, 1988, weeks after she told friends and family members that she planned to break up with her abusive boyfriend, Brenda Sue Schaefer was reported missing.I dont think our mother believed it, but we knew she was dead right away, Brendas brother Tom Schaefer told CBS News.He was right. On Sept. 24, Schaefers 50-year-old boyfriend Mel Ignatow had brutally murdered her in Louisville, Kentucky after learning she planned to break up with him a fact Ignatow later admitted himself. But that confession didnt come until after hed already been acquitted of her murder and made a free man. And despite the confession, he could not be charged with her murder a second time due to double jeopardy laws. This is the story of Mel Ignatow, the man who got away with the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Brenda Schaefer on a technicality. The Events Leading Up To Brenda Schaefers DeathMelvin Henry Ignatow was born on March 26, 1938 in Pennsylvania. He eventually moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked in business. According to The Courier-Journal, he met Brenda Schaefer, a doctors assistant, on a blind date in the fall of 1986, and the two began dating. But two years into the relationship, Schaefer began hinting to coworkers and family members that Ignatow was abusive. The Courier-Journal reported that Linda Love, the girlfriend of Schaefers brother Tom, later testified that shed gone to dinner with Schaefer in August 1988. At that dinner, Love claimed, Schaefer confessed that she hated and was afraid of Ignatow, and intended to break up with him. Ignatow himself was aware of Schaefers intentions and began plotting with his ex-girlfriend Mary Ann Shore to murder her.The Brutal Murder Of Brenda SchaeferIgnatow and Shore decided that the murder would happen at Shores house. The two spent weeks making plans that included digging a grave in Shores backyard and soundproofing the house. On Sept. 24, 1988, Schaefer met up with Ignatow to return the jewelry he had given her. Instead, he took Schaefer to Shores home. Once there, NY Daily News reports, he pulled out a gun and locked her into the house. He tied her to a glass coffee table and stripped, blindfolded, and gagged Schaefer before raping and torturing her.Ignatow then killed his 36-year-old girlfriend using chloroform. Meanwhile, Shore stood by, taking photos of the abuse.Investigating Schaefers DisappearanceThe next day, Schaefer was reported missing. Her abandoned car was found near where she lived with her parents. It wasnt long before Ignatow was singled out as the lead suspect.Roy Hazelwood was an investigator for the FBIs Behavioral Sciences Unit and an expert on sexually deviant criminals. He was brought onto Schaefers case to help investigators better understand the suspect. You dont break up with someone like Mel Ignatow, Hazelwood told CBS News. Mel Ignatow breaks up with you. However, following investigations, authorities couldnt find witnesses or physical evidence that linked Mel Ignatow to Schaefers disappearance, and he vehemently denied having anything to do with it. And Schaefers body still hadnt been found. In 1989, police told Melvin Ignatow he could testify before a grand jury to clear his name. It was during that hearing that Ignatow mentioned Mary Shore for the first time. Investigators then questioned Shore, who readily admitted to assisting Ignatow in the murder and even led police to where the body was buried. Finally, 14 months after Schaefer had gone missing, her body was dug up, bearing signs of abuse that seemed to line up with Shores claims.Despite a lack of DNA evidence that might help single out a suspect, Ignatow was finally charged with Brenda Schaefers murder. The trial, however, went horribly wrong. According to Murderpedia, Shore giggled on the witness stand and left a terrible impression, hurting her credibility in the eyes of the jury. The defense even suggested the Shore had killed Schaefer out of jealousy. YouTubeMary Shore testifying in court during Melvin Ignatows trial.Ultimately, the jury determined that there was not enough evidence to convict Ignatow. On Dec. 22, 1991, Mel Ignatow was acquitted of the rape and murder of Brenda Schaefer. The judge on the case, embarrassed by the trials outcome, wrote a personal apology letter to Schaefers family. Evidence Against Mel Ignatow Finally EmergesAbout six months later, a carpet installer was pulling up carpet from a hallway in Mel Ignatows former home when he uncovered a floor vent. Inside the vent, he found a plastic bag filled with jewelry belonging to Schaefer, along with three rolls of undeveloped film. When developed, the more than 100 photos proved that Shores testimony was completely true. The images were the photos Shore had taken during Schaefers murder, showing Ignatow raping and torturing his girlfriend. But because of double jeopardy laws, which say you cant be tried for a crime for which youve already been acquitted, Ignatow couldnt be retried for Brenda Schaefers murder.Instead, Mel Ignatow was brought to trial for perjury, based on the illegitimacy of his testimony in the murder trial.During the trial, Ignatow outright confessed that he had committed the murder. In October 1992, he was sentenced to eight years and one month for perjury. After his 1997 release, he was charged again with another count of perjury in a case involving Schaefers boss, who had threatened to kill Ignatow if he didnt say what had happened to Schaefer. Ignatow was sentenced to another nine years.Mel Ignatow Avoided Justice, But Karma Finally Caught Up To HimMelvin Ignatow was released from prison in 2006, and lived as a free man in Kentucky for a couple of years before finally getting his comeuppance. On Sept. 1, 2008, twenty years after the murder of Brenda Schaefer, Mel Ignatow accidentally fell in his home. He bled out and died at the age of 70. In the truest sense of karma, one aspect of his death was eerily reminiscent of Brenda Schaefers murder. Apparently, he fell and hit a glass coffee table, Ignatows son Michael Ignatow told local news station WAVE.He will probably go down as one of the most hated men in Louisville, Michael added. If you found this story about Melvin Ignatow interesting, you may want to read about the teenage killer who was caught thanks to a Facebook selfie. Then, learn about these rich and famous people who probably got away with heinous crimes. The post How Melvin Ignatow Got Away With Murder Before Eventually Being Killed By Karma appeared first on All That's Interesting.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 0 Views -
ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMInside The Life Of Pattie Boyd, The Swinging 60s Icon And Rock N Roll MuseFlickr/Wikimedia CommonsPattie Boyd with George Harrison in 1966 (left), and Eric Clapton on guitar in 1975 (right). There are women who marry rock stars, and then theres the woman who married two rock legends. Pattie Boyd was a blonde, doe-eyed girl from South West England. After finding success in modeling, she was cast in the 1964 Beatles film A Hard Days Night. She had a single, one-word line. But a more notable result of her casting was meeting George Harrison, whom she went on to marry. Though her relationship with Harrison would not last forever, it did lead to her meeting his good friend Eric Clapton who would be her next husband.Pattie Boyds Fateful Encounter With George Harrison And Their Famous MarriageWikimedia CommonsPattie Boyd, pictured in 1965.Born in Somerset, England on March 17, 1944, Pattie Boyd eventually moved to London in 1962. She found work as a shampoo girl at a beauty salon, but was soon inspired to pursue modeling after an agent approached her with a new job offer. Her modeling career quickly took off, and before long, she was posing for some of the best fashion photographers in New York and Paris. She eventually worked her way to the front cover of Vogue magazine. In 1964, Boyd received a different type of call from her agent. He told her to report to Londons Paddington Station, because she had been given a small bit role in a film involving the Beatles, amidst the rise of Beatlemania. In A Hard Days Night, Boyd played a schoolgirl, whose only line was the word Prisoners. Small a role as it may have been, it was enough to get George Harrison to notice her, as she instantly caught his eye. While the two were still on set together, Harrison asked Boyd to go out with him. More specifically, he asked her, Will you marry me? Boyd had a boyfriend at the time, so she initially declined his proposal. Are you completely mad? Dump the boyfriend immediately, Boyd recalled a friend saying to her. So I did.Pattie Boyd and George Harrison soon became an iconic couple. He was the Quiet Beatle, she was the Vogue model. When they actually did get married in 1966, Boyd said, I was so happy I thought I might burst. Their marriage was marked by several milestones. The Beatles song Something, from the album Abbey Road, was written for Boyd by Harrison. Boyd also claimed that she was the one who introduced Harrison to meditation, leading to the Beatles highly publicized trip to India in 1968.Meanwhile, Harrison and the Beatles introduced the formerly innocent Boyd to drugs like LSD, and by 1969, Boyd and Harrison had been arrested for marijuana possession following a police raid. Despite the excitement, Boyd claimed that after returning from India, Harrisons spirituality made him increasingly isolated. He would spend hours alone chanting and meditating, and before long, the pairs marriage suffered. How Pattie Boyd Was Drawn To Eric Clapton And How That Relationship Also DeterioratedUniversal Images Group North America LLC/AlamyEric Clapton and Pattie Boyd, pictured together in London in 1974.In the meantime, George Harrison had become good friends with guitarist Eric Clapton, who had been visiting Harrisons home more frequently. Pattie Boyd could tell early on that Clapton was interested in her. Thus began the ultimate rock n roll love triangle. Whenever Boyd felt neglected by Harrison, Clapton showered her with attention and compliments. It wasnt just light-hearted flirting either, as Clapton soon grew infatuated with Boyd, and he wasnt shy about sharing his feelings with her. As Boyd recalled, Clapton invited her over to the London apartment that he shared with his Derek and the Dominos bandmates. He wanted to play her a song he was working on. It was the most incredible song, she remembered. The song he played was about a man who was completely captivated by a woman, begging her to be his. That song was Layla, and it is arguably one of Eric Claptons most famous songs to date. As it turned out, there was a party planned for that exact same evening. Pattie Boyd, George Harrison, and Eric Clapton were all in attendance. At one point during the gathering, Clapton nonchalantly went up to Harrison and said, I have to tell you something. Im in love with your wife. Harrison was reportedly furious after hearing this, telling Boyd in a bout of anger to just go off with Clapton. She didnt. Instead, she stayed with Harrison for another three years. What ultimately made Boyd leave him was the discovery of an affair that Harrison was having. In true rock n roll fashion, it was with Maureen Starkey, the wife of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. Pattie Boyd and Eric Clapton later moved in together and eventually married in 1979. At first glance, it seemed like both had gotten their happy ending. But Boyd and Claptons relationship was also riddled with turmoil. Not only were there alleged affairs on both sides, but Claptons alcoholism also complicated matters. Eventually, Boyd found out that Clapton had a baby by another woman, resulting in a separation in 1987 and a divorce in 1989. As dramatic as the situation seemed, Claptons friendship with Harrison somehow survived. Harrison even once said this of Boyd and Claptons relationship: Id rather she be with him than some dope. Wikimedia CommonsA more recent photo of Pattie Boyd, taken in 2018 in Liverpool. When Harrison died in 2001 after a battle with cancer, Clapton was the musical director for the Concert for George tribute show. And shortly before Harrison perished, he made sure to visit Boyd so he could say goodbye. As Boyd remembered: He came with some little gifts and we played music and had some tea. It was lovely to see him, but I knew he wasnt well. I sensed that he wanted to see me rather than leave it too late.Boyd went on to marry a third time in 2015. It was her first marriage to a non-musician Rod Weston, a former property developer. In more recent years, she has also made a name for herself as a photographer, even publishing books like Pattie Boyd: My Life in Pictures. Rediscovering photos shed taken in the past (including some of fellow celebrities) inspired her to share them with the wider world. And though she had first risen to fame as a subject of photography, she was clearly just as happy behind the camera as she was in front of it.After reading about Pattie Boyd, go inside the surprising stories behind nine of your favorite Beatles songs.
