Dying Light The Beast has over 170 zombie types, don't say we didn't warn you

You'd think we'd have run out of zombies by now. They've been kicking around Haitian folklore for centuries, brought to Western audiences by W.B. Seabrook in his 1929 book, The Magic Island. Since then, we've run through every possible interpretation, from George A. Romero to Alex Garland. And yet, Dying Light The Beast offers up over 170 new zombie designs to try to put its own spin on the genre. Stick with us to break down these designs and everything else discussed in the blog post.

First up, developer Techland discusses the Biters. Instead of the mummified corpses of the past, these are now, well, wetter. Bloated and decaying, there are 110 different Biter designs in Dying Light The Beast, each ready to rip your head off and scoop out your brains like ice cream.

But it wouldn't be a zombie game without the newly infected. 60 variants of Virals will appear in the game, complete with an uncanny valley look to their not-quite-human heads. Special infected, like the Howler, Goon, and Spitter, all reference their previous jobs in their design and mechanics.

However, the scariest of these creatures are those fully mutated. The unsettling Chimeras have designs inspired by medical journals and Volatiles will parkour over terrain in order to pounce quickly and effectively.

Danger is everywhere and, if this blog post is an indication of things to come, zombies will be, too. From the slightly freaky to the downright disturbing, Dying Light: The Beast promises nearly 200 zombie designs, so there's undoubtedly something for everyone among their ranks.

Dying Light: The Beast releases on Friday, September 19. You can read the full blog post in all its gory detail here.

If this has got your blood pumping, why not try out one of the best horror games while you wait for The Beast to arrive? If that's not your thing, the best open-world games could have something for you.

Which is your favorite zombie? Let us know on our community Discord server. Mine is Ed at the end of Shaun of the Dead. Spoilers, I guess.
