Interior Designers Share How to Decorate Your Porch for Fall Even If You Can’t Stand the Color Orange

If the typical harvest color palette is not your style, there’s finally a solution to finding festive fall decor that’s not orange. We wanted to prove that it’s possible to decorate your porch for fall without orange, but surprisingly, we were stumped too. So, we decided to turn to the experts for their professional design opinions. How do you prepare the porch for trick or treaters when you prefer subdued pumpkin colors, like white and green? How do you make the porch look inviting for Thanksgiving dinner guests when you find tangerine and apricot hues to be obnoxious? We reached out to interior designers about the best ways to dress up the porch for fall, and as usual, the pros did not disappoint.

Turns out, there are no rules to staging the perfect fall porch decor. It’s all according to your personal preference, so if you prefer pink or really like navy blue, then Nashville-based designer Brittney Morgan, owner of Brittney Quinn Interiors, recommends you go for it. No passersby will miss the color orange should you choose to decorate without it. On the contrary, decking out your fall porch with the color palette and design aesthetic you love personally will radiate authenticity and stand out as unique, too.

Keep scrolling for fall porch decor ideas sans the color orange, as recommended by professional interior designers. Prices start at $13.

Designer-Approved Fall Porch Decor That’s Not Orange

Eco Living Chelsea Flower Print Coir Doormat

“When you think fall, you probably think about leaf motifs in shades of orange and brown,” Morgan says. “But this doormat, which has a pretty floral design in shades of blue, feels perfectly appropriate for the season (though could be used year-round!) while still setting your porch decor apart from the rest.”

This pretty doormat is crafted with natural coconut coir material, which adds some warmth as well as character to the entryway. It’s pet-friendly, dirt-absorbent, and even has a sturdy backing made from nonslip PVC that keeps it from sliding around the porch.

Sticking to a navy blue fall theme, Morgan’s next pick includes this handpainted 13-inch flower pot with a UV-resistant finish.

“Swap out your planters for these dark, denim-inspired flower pots, and add the plants of your choosing, real or faux,” Morgan says. “Flanking either side of your front door—especially in addition to that floral doormat—they’ll create a grand entrance all season long.”

This front door wreath adds a pop of warmth and texture to your porch, playing into fall’s natural, earthy vibes. “You don’t have to incorporate hay or straw to get that earthy, fall feel,” Morgan says. “Pampas grass is a much softer way to get that dry autumnal texture, and you can find it in just about every color imaginable. This soft navy pampas grass wreath is a simple pick that still feels a bit glamorous, and it’ll definitely be a welcome addition to your front door.”

According to Morgan, flowers aren’t just for summer—especially because these outdoor pillow covers feature navy and dark green.

“Whether you’ve got an outdoor sofa, a cozy swing, or a set of rocking chairs on your front porch, the easiest way to zhuzh your porch’s seating area is with some new throw pillow covers,” Morgan explains. “Slip them over your existing pillows and suddenly you’ve got a brand new look. The navy floral print on these pillow covers doesn’t feel too springy or summery—I think the dark, moody shade of blue feels autumnal with a twist.”

“I’m extremely pro outdoor rugs, because a rug can pull any space together and anchor a seating arrangement, even on your front porch,” Morgan says. “While this geometric pattern doesn’t necessarily scream ‘fall’ on its own, paired with the rest of these picks, you end up with a beautiful blue boho fall decor scheme.”

This geometric, reversible outdoor rug is also as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing. “The best part? The rug is made from recycled plastic, making it totally waterproof—which means easy cleaning, too,” Morgan adds.

Velsyn Navy Blue Flameless Battery-Operated Candles

The porch decor really starts to get an elevated “fall” feel once you add flameless candles to the mix.

“To add even more of a cozy vibe to your new fall porch setup, put out some of these battery-operated flameless candles in this gorgeous shade of navy,” Morgan suggests. “The candles flicker for a more realistic look, but you don’t have to worry about melting wax or open flames. They even come with a handy remote to turn them on and off or set them on a timer.”

“Of course, it’s not truly fall without at least some pumpkins, but rest assured to the orange-averse: You can find some truly beautiful faux pumpkins in other colors, including the navy blue seen here,” Morgan explains. “These 8-inch tall pumpkins come in a set of two for just $23, and I love that they have just a touch of glam and warmth from their gold stems.”

Jennifer O’Brien, Long Island-based designer at City Farmhouse and author, says the key to going anti-orange with your fall porch is to give evergreen porch products “a twist with color, pattern, and texture,” and chose to focus on brown, green, and plum hues, as well as rattan textures and metals like iron and copper.

“I love a good jumping off point when it comes to styling my porch for the fall, and this cozy plaid throw is it this year,” O’Brien says. “The palette of mustard yellow, forest green, and rich, moody blue is a unique alternative to the traditional fall hues. It feels vintage and nostalgic—the ideal fall sentiment. It brings me back to those cool nights camping by the fire, sheathed in coziness.”

Here are those copper-toned accessories O’Brien just mentioned. “These planters are perfect with the overall vintage fall theme,” she says. Each galvanized metal planter is 28 inches tall and features drainage holes and a tray inside. They will “add a warm texture and height to your front door. This is an excellent price for the pair and can be used all year long,” O’Brien adds.

Kol 5-Foot 2-Pack Horsetail Reed Grass

“When artificial looks this real, count me in,” O’Brien says. “I love the look of grass in the fall. They add an organic feel and can be a nice backdrop to the rest of your fall decor.”

The two-pack features horsetail reed grass that measures 59 inches high, and has a bushy fullness that makes it super realistic-looking. Each plant is adhered to the pot inside with the help of cement that keeps the planter balanced and heavy so it won’t blow away.

Domensi 15.5x10x7.5-Inch Front Door Basket

“This front door hanging basket is a nice alternative to a wreath,” O’Brien says, adding that “it feels like something you’d find at a curated thrift store or flea market.” The basket comes sans flowers, so it’s a completely blank slate. “It’s large, full of texture, and feels found. You can fill it with dried flowers, branches from your yard, or faux greenery,” O’Brien says.

Another way to say “no” to orange is to completely swap it out for a deep, bold, fall- and Halloween-friendly plum. “Adding a touch of plum to this existing moody color palette is the cherry on top. These can also be added to stacked pots on the floor. I love mixing realistic faux greenery with my real plants. Not only does it save money in the long run, but it [also] lasts longer.”

Another one of O’Brien’s key suggestions is to focus on lighting. A warm, flameless glow is more interesting and enticing than any bright orange decor and it’s much easier on the eyes, too.

“Every fall porch needs a set of tall metal lanterns with warm light,” O’Brien explains. “Not only do these battery-operated lights add height, but they’re also a great price. It’s also a solid investment. I love using mine all year long. “

O’Brien also recommends bringing your indoor boucle outdoors for some added texture and coziness. “Whether you have a settee, couch, or chairs on your porch, cozy, textured pillows are a must,” O’Brien says. “The combination of boucle and vegan leather is not only on-trend, but it’s [also] practical.” She adds that, “pairing it with all the other textures and colors makes it feel grounded while also pulling the look together.”

Wimarsbon 2-Piece Seagrass Ottomans

“Adding these textured seagrass ottomans to your fall is a win-win,” O’Brien says. “Not only do they add extra seating, but they can also be used to stack your fall accessories. I have the same ones, and I consistently transition them from indoors to outdoors.”

Each cover is 100% handmade from sustainable seaweed and a corn husk braid, so they’re guaranteed to last the test of time. Use it for guests who can sit there to take off their shoes, or as O’Brien suggests, the stools can also function as a surface for stacking other decor, such as lanterns or pumpkins.

Lezonic Set of 4 Flameless Pillar Candles

“I have a set of flameless LED candles, and I use them year-round indoors and out,” O’Brien says. “They are wonderful to set the fall mood and can be left unattended. The green glass pairs perfectly and contrasts with warm textures and mustard yellow,” O’Brien adds.

The four-pack comes with two 4-inch and two 5-inch candles, and each one requires AA batteries for a true set-it-and-forget-it setup. The flame also dances back and forth for an even more convincing look.
