Final Fantasy Tactics sequel could materialize if remaster sells well, says dev

Final Fantasy Tactics is a classic of the strategy RPG genre, a template that countless games have riffed on since. Whether you're an original player of the classic or jumped aboard the tactical RPG train with Triangle Strategy or Ogre Tactics, it's a game worth revisiting. The forthcoming remaster, subtitled The Ivalice Chronicles, will revisit the dialogue and mechanics to update the game for a 2025 audience, but its reception could mean a whole lot more. Kazutoyo Maehiro, who directed the remaster, has hinted that if the game is a commercial success, it could "open the door" to more games in the series.

"If The Ivalice Chronicles can do well, that's good for the fans, they can enjoy it. But, at the same time, it shows the business viability of the strategy RPG genre," Maehiro tells Inverse. "So that could potentially open the door for doing something with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or A2, or maybe even sequels and new titles as well. I think I speak for everyone who's worked on the original Final Fantasy Tactics, and is working on The Ivalice Chronicles as well - we'd really like to see that happen."

That's exciting news for any strategy game fan. While we're all eager to replay FFT with Maehiro's fresh spin, a brand new Final Fantasy Tactics game would be something else. A new story, new characters (or revisiting old ones), and-most importantly-new tactical configurations.

I'm hoping that the remaster provides some new tactical options, or else players will already know how to solve the majority of the game. Provided our memory holds up, that is, we're not getting any younger. But Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was not as widely played, and is therefore ripe for a remaster. Imagine FFTA, but with A2's jobs system. Now we're talking.

Obviously Maehiro is trying to promote his new game, and wants it to sell well, but the fact that Square Enix is monitoring sales and may dip back into the tactical RPG genre with the right results is very exciting.
