I've been a big Helldivers fan since the days of the original. While Arrowhead has done a phenomenal job of converting its top-down co-op shooter into the full-featured, third-person Helldivers 2, I still firmly believe there's space for the classic perspective. It worked just as well in Valve's Alien Swarm, and now the latest take on the format has arrived courtesy of indie team Juvty Worlds. Ammo and Oxygen feels like a fusion of old-school Helldivers and the survival horror of Dead Space. Nearly one year since it first launched in early access, Ammo and Oxygen 1.0 is here, and you can grab it at a discount if you're quick.

Rather than flooding you with constant hordes the way Helldivers does, Ammo and Oxygen pushes the action closer to survival horror games. In case the title wasn't enough of a giveaway, you'll need to keep a close eye on your key resources (they could have thrown 'and Batteries' in the title, too, but that's probably less catchy). Each enemy you encounter could be a serious threat if not treated with respect, so playing it stealthy and conserving your supplies might prove the most valuable course of action.

Sometimes you'll have no choice but to go loud. Fortunately, there are all manner of guns and other tools at your disposal: grenade launchers, energy shields, sound-dampening equipment, night-vision goggles, and even katanas. As you progress, you're able to return to base and utilize your gathered resources to craft unique weapon recipes, upgrade your arsenal, and enhance your core skills.

Version 1.0 introduces the final level of the story, makes some balance changes to smooth out the progression, improves visibility of certain obstacles, passages, and information, and adds new tutorials. Co-op is supported for up to four players, although you'll currently need to make use of Steam Remote Play or team up locally. Juvty Worlds says it's working on full online support for the co-op game in the future.

Ammo and Oxygen 1.0 is out now on Steam, with a 20% discount meaning you'll pay just $11.99 / £10.23 if you buy it by Sunday September 14. Head here to take a look if you think you've got what it takes to survive the night.

Alternatively, we've rounded up the best survival games on PC right now, along with the best indie games you need to play in 2025, so there's no excuse for missing out on any hidden games.

What role would you play in a real-life crew of survivors? Let us know in the PCGamesN community Discord server. I'm leaning towards the medic myself.
