Myst has a special place in the heart of many an adventure fan, sequel included. And now, Neyyah, a new pre-rendered sci-fi adventure published by Microprose (yes, that Microprose) is picking up Myst's torch. With puzzles, pre-rendered locations and full-motion video aplenty, it resembles a gorgeous, if completely unofficial, follow-up to Myst. And, even better, it's out now on Steam.

Let's face it, Myst 6 is unlikely to happen any time soon, not least because of layoffs at developer Cyan. Adventure game Neyyah, which describes itself as  "A love letter to the legendary puzzle adventures of the 1990s," should absolutely scratch that itch.

It's developed by Defy Reality Entertainment and published by Microprose Games, known for their military sims. Myst aside, it also reminds us a little of Zork: Grand Inquisitor, another adventure that made heavy use of full-motion video.

Just watching it in motion takes us right back. Instead of wandering freely around each location, you flick from screen to screen, taking in each pre-rendered location. And, like Myst, you're not entirely sure what you're doing in the titular realm.

The premise behind Neyyah is that you're sent on a quest to the realm by the mysterious Vamir. We're not sure if he'll turn out to be evil or not, but his name's a little too close to 'vampire' for our taste.

As you seek to  unravel Neyyah's mysteries you'll also encounter other characters, who appear as FMV. The acting seems as authentically odd as it was in Myst, Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within and other 90s adventures. Maybe Defy Reality can get Christopher Walken for Neyyah 2.

A strange structure like a small town in the middle of a body of water.

Neyyah is out now on Steam, priced at $19.99 / £16.79, including a 20% launch discount. Want more conundrums to tackle? We've rounded up the best puzzle games and the best detective games.
