If there's one thing you can say about Reikon Games, it's that it knows how to craft a mean cyberpunk world. The brutal metropolis of Rengkok, introduced to us in the studio's gritty twin-stick shooter, Ruiner, married sharply contrasting hues with the game's even-sharper combat. Now, Reikon's back, and while Metal Eden doesn't stray too far from Reikon's tried-and-true aesthetic, the frenetic FPS leans even harder into the maximalist sci-fi trappings adorned by its predecessor.

It's 2091, and the planet Moebius, once a paradise for humanity, is now a cold, industrial husk that's fraught with perils. In Metal Eden, human souls are digitized, before being uploaded to machines known as Cores. However, the last vestiges of the living are threatened by the Engineers, a sinister force intent on destroying them. In what could land as one of the year's best FPS games, you play as Aska, who, in Altered Carbon fashion, can hop from meat suit to meat suit as she works to thwart the Engineers' nefarious designs.

Boasting the linear level design, rapid movement, and arsenal of hyper-futuristic weaponry you'd find in Doom Eternal, Metal Eden is an immediately attractive proposition if Doom The Dark Ages' more robust iteration of the Doomslayer didn't do it for you. Though I awarded id's latest a very handsome 8/10 in my Doom The Dark Ages review, Eternal's breakneck combat is a cut above in my book.

Metal Eden is certainly a speedrunner's paradise. Reikon's also incorporated Ghostrunner-style parkour into the mix, alongside a mixture of grapples and other environmental elements that'll keep you zoomin' around its multi-tiered arenas. The studio even ran a $1,000 competition to see who could clear Metal Eden's demo the quickest. Movement demons, your time is now.

Metal Eden is out today, September 2, 2025. You can check it out on Steam here.
