Terraria 1.4.5 is "in the endgame now," but crossplay will be a little longer

It's been almost three years since Terraria 1.4.5 was first mentioned, and what could be the final update for one of the best-selling games ever is still in the works. Developer Re-Logic has been taking its time, adding more features and cooking everything to perfection, but there's naturally one question on everyone's minds: when we can actually play it? Now, in its Terraria State of the Game blog post for August 2025, the studio says it's "in the endgame" on the long-awaited overhaul.

Head of business strategy Ted 'Loki' Murphy opens up the new State of the Game blog by confirming the team is "well into the final push for Terraria 1.4.5." It's far from the first time that an update for the sandbox game has been pitched as the last one, although Re-Logic president Andrew 'Redigit' Spinks said back in 2023 that the team was "trying to wrap things up so we can start a new game soon." As one of the bestselling indie games ever, the Terraria studio has the luxury of not needing to rush, and has emphasized its desire to ensure the best launch possible.

"The Re-Logic team sat down this past month for one last parsing of the list of items remaining," Murphy explains. "Some things were deferred and others prioritized, all in an effort to arrive at something we have been looking forward to for quite a while: an internal launch window." There's no Terraria 1.4.5 release date today; Murphy says the team is "not quite ready to share that timeline publicly just yet." But Re-Logic has laid out the plan to its internal partners such as DR Studios, who are involved in development of the console and mobile versions.

Murphy also confirms that a global launch across all platforms and territories is planned. "We are considering this somewhat of a 'dry run' for the post-crossplay world," he remarks. Re-Logic has been testing crossplay for a long time, but it's long been marked as a feature that would arrive slightly after 1.4.5. That still appears to be the case, although Murphy says it's "something we hope to bring to fruition in very short order once 1.4.5 is out and all hotfixes are done."

It wouldn't be a new Terraria State of the Game without a few spoilers. While we do get a look at a new furniture set, seen just above, the meatier one is a more mechanical change that nevertheless I'm very excited for. Defense in Terraria has always felt a bit nebulous, especially on Expert and Master+ difficulty where values are subject to multipliers.

"Just increasing the defense number can also create confusion," Murphy notes, "so there needs to be some way to communicate both the increase's effect and the fact that it is tied to a given difficulty level." In Terraria 1.4.5, you'll now see your defense shield icon's shape and colors change to reflect how well protected you are, along with a text explanation of the numbers when you hover over the symbol, as seen below.

"There are countless little things like the above that go into each update, alongside the bugs that we all know and hate being squashed underfoot," Murphy concludes. "Speaking of bugs, nearly 900 have been closed during the development process of 1.4.5. Again, we are in the final push now. The content list is locked in, the bug and ticket list is locked in, and the internal timeline is set. We are hopeful that we will be able to share something more publicly soon."
