After enjoying a short period of time as king of the SSDs earlier this year, the price of the Samsung 9100 Pro has just crashed to its lowest ever price, meaning you can now pick up this super-fast PCIe 5.0 gaming SSD without handing over a huge sum of money. The 1TB drive's price has plummeted from $199.99 to $129.99, while the 4TB drive's price has crashed from $549.99 to $372.42. You'll need to be quick, though, as this is only a limited-time deal.

Five months ago, I proclaimed this drive the "fastest gaming SSD we've ever tested" in my Samsung 9100 Pro review, and it quickly jumped onto our guide to buying the best gaming SSD. While it has since been overtaken by the WD Black SN8100 when it comes to that coveted "fastest ever" title, this Samsung drive remains an incredibly fast SSD that's still well ahead of most drives, which is what makes this current deal so enticing.

In particular, if you can afford the $372.42 price of the 4TB drive at Amazon, it works out at just $93.11 per terabyte, which is amazing for the performance on offer. I've been using the 4TB version of this drive in my own PC for a few months now, and it's a life-changer in terms of the number of games you can install. I still have nearly 2TB free, and I have loads of the latest games ready to play on my rig - it's just great to not have to worry about running out of storage space anymore.

The prices of the 1TB and 2TB drives are also genuinely reasonable now as well, though. At $199.99 from Samsung, the 2TB 9100 Pro drive is $100 cheaper than its $299.99 launch price just a few months ago. If you don't need loads of storage space, but you value super-fast performance, then that 1TB drive is also very tempting at $129.99.

I measured the sequential read speed of this drive at a massive 14,725MB/s in my tests, which isn't far off Samsung's 14,800MB/s claim, and it's only been beaten by the aforementioned WD Black SN8100 since then. The 9100 Pro also excelled in our game load tests, where it's even faster than the WD drive in Overwatch, and only just behind it in our Battlefield V test.

The caveat here is that, while you'll see a big jump in performance by upgrading to this drive from an older PCIe 4.0 drive in large-scale file transfers, the benefits in games and day-to-day use are considerably smaller. Also, bear in mind that you'll also need to use a chunky heatsink with this drive, as it gets very hot under load, so use the PCIe 5.0 one that comes with your motherboard, if it has one, or you can alternatively buy the Samsung 9100 Pro with a very effective (and slim) heatsink already fitted for an extra $10.

The other main component you'll need for this drive is a motherboard with a full-speed 4x PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot. You can install it in a PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, and it will work, but the speeds will top out at around 7,300MB/s. If you need an upgrade, then read our tutorial on how to install an SSD, and check out our guide to buying the best gaming motherboard, where we take you through all our current favorite options for both Intel and AMD CPUs.
