We're gonna assume that you already own an electric toothbrush. It's pretty much the standard for dental care these days and a must-have bathroom accessory. If you don’t own an electric toothbrush, your toothy-pegs need to get with the times. Because seriously: We're way beyond doing the job of brushing ourselves. We're not cavemen anymore, guys. And there are huge dental health benefits to electric toothbrushes.

Recent studies confirm that electric toothbrushes users have healthier gums and less tooth decay. That's especially true with electric toothbrushes that have “oscillating” heads, which rotate in both directions and sweep away even more plaque.

In addition to all that, electric toothbrushes are seriously advanced in 2025. The best models have multiple cleaning modes, Bluetooth and app control, pressure sensors, and more. All of which makes it harder to upgrade. How can you possibly know which model is best for you and your teeth? To help you out, here’s some information to brush up on electric toothbrush tech, plus a selection of the very best models.

What makes a good electric toothbrush?

We can get really detailed but there are some very basic things to look out for:

  • Action There are different types of toothbrushes that provide different movements, such as oscillating (rotates in one direction and back again), pulsing (moving backwards and forwards against teeth), and rotating (bristles that actually turn).

  • Battery life Thankfully, most electric toothbrushes come with a charging base, though some are powered by regular batteries (that all depends on how fancy the toothbrush is). But still check battery times. A few weeks’ worth of power is good.

  • Replacement heads — The head of your toothbrush will need replacing. That’s just a dentist-endorsed fact of life. Some toothbrushes come with a few heads, which is helpful. If not, look out for models that have readily available replacement heads.

Keep these things in mind when shopping around for a new model.

How often should you change your toothbrush head?

General advice is to change every three months, though the more specific rule says when the bristles are worn down. Some brush heads have bristles that change colour to let you know when it’s time to replace the head. While brands like Oral-B and Philips offer lots of different toothbrush models, the heads tend to be one-size-fits-all.

What are the best electric toothbrush features?

As well as the basics, there are lots of more specialised features to consider. Here are some key features that we think are are worth knowing about:

  • App connectivity — The most advanced toothbrushes will connect to an app via your smartphone, giving real-time feedback and advice on your brushing. These toothbrushes may also have AI capabilities that adapt to your bushing style.

  • Pressure sensor — Pressure sensors will alert you if you’re pressing too hard, which can lead to damage to your gums and tooth enamel. Oral-B includes this feature in its SmartRing, which lights up to warn you if you’re brushing too hard.

  • Two-minute timer — Exactly as it sounds, this alerts you when you’ve cleaned for the recommended two minutes. Some timers also pause every 30 seconds, helping you clean each “quadrant” of your mouth equally.

What is the best electric toothbrush?

There's a wide range of quality electric toothbrushes on the market, with models from big names in smart tech and personal care. Everyone's dental needs are different, and everyone's toothbrush needs are different too. All we can do is point you in the direction, helping you to upgrade to a toothbrush that suits you.

These are the best electric toothbrushes for 2025.

Oral-B iO Series 10 electric toothbrush

The Good & The Bad

  • iOSense technology
  • AI tracks brushing
  • Real-time guidance
  • Uses micro-vibrations
  • Pressure sensor
  • Premium brush, premium price
  • Not everyone needs this tech

Why We Like It

When it comes to super-smart Oral-B toothbrushes, the Oral-B iO Series 10 is the best of the best. It has everything: An iOSense smart charger, 3D analysis, and magnet-driven micro vibrations. That sounds like a lot of jargon, but it's really quite simple. The iO Series 10 is very good for your teeth indeed.

Powered by iOSense technology, this gives you real-time brushing guidance via the magnetic smart charger, which tells you how, when, and where to brush. It covers six zones by using AI 3D teeth tracking, which monitors brushing across the front, top, and back of your teeth.

The actual brushing is powered by a magnetic drive system. This channels the cleaning power to the point of every individual bristle and creates micro-vibrations, which are gentle but bolster plaque removal. Indeed, the "i" in iOSense stands for individually powered bristles, while the "O" stands for the dentists recommended O shape of the head, helping reach all areas.

Don't be put off by the price. It's an investment in dental hygiene. If you want the very best in smart toothbrush tech, the Oral-B iO Series 10 is the one for you. It's often heavily discounted on Amazon, too.

Oral-B iO3 electric toothbrush

The Good & The Bad

  • iO technology
  • 360 pressure sensor
  • 2-minute timer
  • Brush change alert
  • More affordable
  • No smart features
  • No extra brush heads
  • Doesn't have fast charging

If you want Oral-B — it’s the best-known electric toothbrush brand, after all — but you don’t want to shell out huge money for the pleasure, the Oral-B iO3 is a great lower cost alternative. You still get the benefits of iO technology, plus a pared-back feature selection.

Delivering that oscillating action with individually powered bristles and micro vibrations, it has three cleaning modes — Daily Clean, Sensitive, and Whitening — plus a pressure sensor to help protect your gums.

Other features include a 2-minute timer plus a refill change alert, so you always know when it’s time to swap the brush head — but there are no spare brush heads included, unfortunately. There’s also no app connectivity or brushing guidance with this model. For that level of tech, you’ll have to spend more.

However, if you don’t need all the smart add-ons and you’re more interests in keep those pearly whites in the best shape possible for a reasonable price, Oral-B boasts that you’ll have healthier gums in just 1 week that this electric will remove 100% more plaque than a manual brush. The Oral-B iO3 is also great if you to give iO technology a try before committing to a model like the iO10.

SURI Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush

The Good & The Bad

  • 33,000 vibrations per minute
  • Plant-based head and bristles
  • Self-cleaning travel case
  • Impressive battery life
  • Magnetic mount included
  • USB charging isn't quite as convenient
  • Heads not as available as Oral-B

Why We Like It

What sets this SURI Sonic Electric Toothbrush apart from the competition is sustainability. The recyclable plant-based head and bristles are made from cornstarch and castor oil, and SURI will recycle them for free when its time to replace. That's great, but you still need an electric toothbrush that can deliver a solid performance. Fortunately, SURI offers the best of both worlds.

SURI's MicraSonic magnetic motor is much smaller than standard electric toothbrushes but delivers 33,000 plaque lifting vibrations per minute in a durable matte aluminium body. This body is even repairable, so this really could be the last toothbrush you ever purchase.

The self-cleaning travel case is a nice touch, and the 40-day battery life is really impressive. You get a three-hour fast charge in the charging travel case via USB C, so when you do eventually run out of juice, you don't need to wait long for your next clean. The case also uses UC technology to clean the brush head. Another nice bonus is a little magnetic mirrored mount that you can attach the wall and pop the toothbrush on for easy access.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9900 Prestige toothbrush

The Good & The Bad

  • Interactive app
  • SenseIQ technology
  • Pressure sensor
  • 3 intensity levels
  • 10x better plaque removal
  • A bit pricey

Why We Like It

The Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Prestige is one of the best models from Philips’ hi-tech DiamondClean toothbrush range. It includes upgraded intensity levels, a built-in pressure sensor, and brush head replacement reminders. It also syncs with Sonicare, an AI-powered app, which tracks progress and sends reports that you can access on your smart device.

The real power of this toothbrush is the SenseIQ technology, which senses pressure, motion, coverage, duration and frequency up to 100 times per second. This helps the DiamondClean 9000 learn and adapt to your brushing style. And with 62,000 bristle movements per minute, it removes 10 times more plaque by gently pulsing fluid between the teeth and gum line.

Other bonus features include EasyStart, which automatically adjusts the power level over your first 14 uses, while QuadPacer helps you refine your technique. This effectively divides your mouth into four sections and the brush vibrates to tell you when it's time to move to the next section.

In addition to all that (as if you needed more), there are four cleaning modes — Clean, White+, Gum Health, and Deep Clean+ — plus two weeks’ worth of battery life and a smart timer for hitting the recommended two-minutes.

Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300 electric toothbrush

The Good & The Bad

  • Budget price Sonicare
  • Pressure sensor
  • Travel case included
  • Brush replacement alerts
  • Long battery life
  • Replacement head costs
  • Limited functions

Why We Like It

Not every Philips toothbrush costs the same as a gold set of gnashers. The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4300 is less expensive, but still effective.

It uses the brand's sonic technology to drive fluid deep between teeth to shift plaque both between teeth and along your gum line. This helps remove up to seven times more plaque than a manual toothbrush. It's a powerful device that it actually proved a little too much for some reviewers. But don't fear: A pressure sensor lets you know if you are brushing too hard.

It also uses something called BrushSync technology, a smart microchip-enabled feature that detects and synchronises the brush head with the handle. BrushSync has an alert system that tells you when it's time to replace your brush head. Overall, a clever toothbrush for a more affordable price.

  • Two-minute smart timer
  • Great reviews on Amazon
  • Not much at this price

Why We Like It

It is possible to get good features at a low price, as you can see with the Aquasonic Black Series Ultra Whitening Toothbrush. The sheer number of positive Amazon reviews is proof of that.

This device uses sonic technology to remove around ten times more plaque compared to a manual brush. It has four brushing modes — Clean, Soft, Massage, and Whiten. The Whiten mode is designed, as the name suggests, to polish and brighten your teeth as you brush. And there's no shortage of actual brushes. It comes with eight heads in total.

A powerful brushing action delivers 40,000 vibrations per minutes, while a smart timer alerts you every 30 seconds — helping guide you through the four quadrants of your mouth — and automatically switches off after two minutes.

Oral-B Junior electric toothbrush

The Good & The Bad

  • Extra soft bristles
  • Brushing timer
  • Teaches kids how to brush
  • Fun designs available
  • Gum pressure sensor
  • No replacement heads
  • No for under 6s

Why We Like It

We all know that getting children to brush properly can be a chore, but the Oral-B Junior 6+ electric toothbrush makes it a little easier. It comes in fun colours and helps to motivate kids to brush well and learn healthy habits.

The built-in timer teaches children to brush for the recommended two minutes, and alerts them every 30 seconds to change to a different area of their mouth. There are also three brushing modes to suit any kids' toothy pegs — Daily Clean, Sensitive and Polish. And if the kids brush too hard, the pulsations stop to alert them that they're applying too much pressure on the gums.

This rechargeable toothbrush features extra-soft bristles, clinically proven to go gentle on children’s teeth and gums, while removing more plaque than a manual toothbrush. It's also compatible with various Oral-B toothbrush heads.
